It is both skill and luck. Chess is about decisions, estimations an instinct. On another day maybe Radjabov wouldn't have made this mistake. Maybe he could have made another mistake or he could have defended perfectly. Every game of skill has some luck. A game with no luck at all can only be a trivial solved game like tic-tac-toe. Chances were in Aronian's favour because he had skill but these chances were materialized into a win with some luck.

There is no luck here. Radjabov played poorly. Chess is not a game of chance. It is a game where every element is known. It is a contest where the person who makes the least mistakes wins.

9:48 i did something like that to my teacher not too long ago, and the funniest part is that since i had a lightsquare bishop he said (he usually talks to himself) that he wants all his pieces on dark squares, and then i said that his king was on a light square, and then we joked about it not being so important since it was just the king. Later in the game i won his queen because his king was on the light square :D

9:00 would it not be possible to win the rook by going for a queen with the pawn after this exchange? Then you would have compensation for the queen with a rook, bishop and the original pawn you captured... Not sure if that can be forced though...

I think if Aronian said he was lucky, he was just being polite to Radjabov. Even though Aronian had the better position throughout the game he did not have a completely won game until Radjabov played a poor move in time pressure which Aronian was able to capitalize on. So I think Aronian was saying that Radjabov had the bad luck rather than imply he was totally outplayed. I like this modesty by strong players, rather than bragging, which just leads to bad feelings.

I have a really stupid question; who are the 14 people that gave this video a thumbs down? I would like for those 14 people to identify themselves. Clearly this is a chess channel; so no one could confuse this with say a shopping, football, baseball, or Porn site. I see a number of thumbs down on pretty much every game chess game Agadmator post. How is that and why is my question in the sincere way possible? Thanks for all of your up loads from all of us that really enjoy your work.

They are people who have no life. Only agadmator gives them purpose where they wait for him to post a video and without watching, they will downvote it. No one knows why they are such sad people that they would do this. I wish I were making this up because it's really embarrassing to describe such a behaviour.

There is no luck over the board. If your opp makes a losing move, it’s a result of many things (you getting him in Time trouble by having better time management yourself, or you putting pressure on him, or you being more mentally fit than him, thus he cracks under pressure sooner, etc.). None of them is luck. Luck is like, you were scheduled to face a strong opp in the next round but he fails to show up and forfeits because his alarm clock didn’t go off or something lol. But over the board, no luck.
@Dark_Voice
@Dark_Voice 6 жыл бұрын
Then you can say that your opponent terribly underestimated technological preparation for the game and your superior sleeping patterns won you the game. Technically you can say there is no luck really. www.brainyquote.com/photos_tr/en/r/ralphwaldoemerson/121133/ralphwaldoemerson1-2x.jpg

MattMexor I agree. Luck is such an arbitrary word in that sense. Hell, maybe Lev said he was lucky diplomatically...like, to soften the blow to his opp’s ego lol.

Seeing an advantage that wasn't seen (skill / experience), knowledge, good/not good... all word related to skill. Then you claim it is luck? People honestly don't know the meaning of the word luck anymore.
@brykhousegames2189
@brykhousegames2189 6 жыл бұрын
How are your thoughts and ability not under your control? Are you mind controlled? Seeing the right move to make is the purest definition of skill. The entire game is making a series of moves better than you opponent. Literally the entire game. How can you possibly argue not making the optimum move is luck? Do you not know the definition of the word skill?
@johnaustin704

I think Aronian was skillfull at taking advantage of the mistakes in time management and on the board that Radjabov made. So skill was used to take advantage of the luck of having his opponent make the mistakes. :)

I think one can say that Aronian had a little bit of luck when Radjabov made a bad decision under timer pressure which allowed Aronian to win the game quickly. Sometimes there can be elements of luck or chance even in chess, nobody can really deny that completely. On the long run skill will always be the really decisive factor in one's carreer as a chessplayer. The game itself was beautiful and well played by Aronian who would have also won without luck. That's my humble opinion...
@brykhousegames2189
@brykhousegames2189 6 жыл бұрын
I think anyone can reasonably deny luck being in the game of Chess at all. Seeing as there is no luck in Chess. By definition of the word. All of your decisions are your own. All of theirs are their own. All variables are known. There is no luck of the draw, no luck of the dice. If a player has a bad game, because they didn't see a move, made a blunder whatever you want to call it, it is their own fault. They made the choice. The choice wasn't randomly determined by the game for them against them or in their favor (aka the actual definition of the word luck).

Some games are won by the winner's skill, some games are lost by the loser's mistake, and some are down to circumstances/luck. That wasn't luck or Aronian winning, it was Radjabov fumbling one.

I think Aronian meant that he was lucky because when he was out of strategy his opponent made a blunder he didnt plan for. Its basically Trojan horse to win the war. Was it luck or skill? What if they burned the horse? So my answer is that it was it was both. Luck that the situation presented itself but skill as the punishment was succesful.

I don't believe in luck in Chess. If a player blunders in time trouble, then their clock was likely mismanaged. If they did not mismanage their clock, IE they used just enough time to find a good move and ensure it's good, but are still in time trouble, then they are not as good of a player. Either they got into a situation where they had to calculate more, or their opponent is the superior player. So, skill all the way. Chess is a perfect information game, other than the first move advantage the players are on an equal footing, and a blunder due to time trouble could perhaps have been prevented if not in time trouble, but both players have the same amount of time on their clock to start.
