I named this apple Flaxen I like that name and looking forward to eating these every year and assessing further. I will likely start sending out scions in 2021

Revisiting this and your new apples vid from last year to get a good understanding of this thing. I opted out of making my strongest seedling I have (a 10 ft. tall 2 1/2 year old royal gala seedling) a Williams Pride for the Flaxen once I saw you ran out of WP scions. Can't wait to get this thing on that tree it grew 6 ft last year. Flaxen looks a lot like some of the organic "Opal" apples that I've seen hit the stores the last couple years, they even have a bit of that russet top on some of them. Those are some of the only ones I like but they have that banana flavor I don't think you're fond of if I remember correctly. Hoping that lemon flavor develops here I can't wait to taste that in an apple.

@@firmamentfarms4869 I started packaging orders today. If I can keep it up, it should go in the mail soon. Opal is a lot different. Modern, crisp open texture. I had one recently and out of cosmic crisp, opal and one other new crisp apple, opal had the best flavor and I didn't detect any banana. Flaxen is very dense, pretty sharp, but plenty sweet. The lemon flavor is fleeting here, but it might be more pronounced elsewhere, or just in certain years more likely. Ive never detected any of the flavor defects I don't like in yellow apples. This year it had more significant pink flesh, so that might express more in certain climates too. Hard to say til other people grow it. I think it will be great for cooking, but haven't tried it yet.

Aged cheddar for the win! Oh and FYI the seedling grown from your Williams Pride/Grenadine cross is the most vigorous, upright, non suckering and lovely young tree Ive ever seen. It totally outshines all the other apples of every rootstock and cultivar variety I have just on those lovely vegetative merits. Very large disease free leaves, I mean 1/3 larger than any other apple I have, zero suckering, easy to train form, with a habit of draping the trunk in small branchless leaves....

That's great. that could be a really great apple. I hope it pans out. If the leaves look really healthy, it may be scab resistant. WP is very scab resistant. it is also pretty vigorous. Just a few more years man!

Yeah, it's cool. Quite a few specimens don't really have much russet though, so I'd be hesitant to name it after that trait. I thought about it too. Towhead was one idea I had.

I hate that they’ve been breeding out the russeting. I think it gives the apple character and I actually think it adds to the beauty of the apple. Surely I can’t be the only one. Imho that is the most beautiful apple I’ve seen of yours. Very pretty with the splash of russet on the top.

Wow! I just found your channel and I learned a lot from this video. I will continue to follow. My problem is each time I try an apple from my orchard I say, "this is the best ever." Most recently, I ate my first Newton Pippen apple that I saved with bridge grafting 5 years ago from mice/vole damage which girdled the tree. It's my new favorite, maybe because I put so much effort into it. Thank you. Kind regards, Craig

just curious -- (I haven't seen all your videos -- I just found you this week) -- you made the remark about waiting and waiting for fruit -- have you considered the Luther Burbank method = graft a portion of the seedling stock to a mature fruiting tree, and the grafted branch should bloom and fruit in the following season...if that would work with pomme fruits like stone fruits, I should think you can speed things up a little -- you look like me -- a few miles on the old clunker -- lifetime is getting a bit shorter each year, eh?.......take care, and thanks for sharing your videos! Congrats on getting another good apple from your breeding project. On the subject of breeding, I know triploid apples are not good at providing pollination, but once pollinated themselves, can they produce viable seed? If so, will the offspring be triploid? I ask because I have really been loving Ashmead's Kernel this year and would like to mix that up with a few of my other favorites, but believe it is triploid.
@SkillCult
@SkillCult 3 жыл бұрын
I actually didn't know it was a triploid. I've used King David in breeding, which some say is triploid, but I think I've used it as a pollen parent. Not totally sure. Suntan makes seeds, but when I try to grow them they often seem low vigor and only a couple have ended up surviving. I'd be hesitant to believe any of it and just try it. there. isn't a lot too lose. This year I actually have ashmeads x Grenadine seeds, so we'll see how that goes. I"m trying to remember if Iv'e used ashmeads pollen successfully or not. I'll have to pay more attention to whether those succeed or not and look through my seedlings to see if any made it last year.

So interested in fruit tree breeding from watching your videos. Would it be possible graft a scion from a seedling earlier to produce fruit on a test trial frankentree?
@SkillCult
@SkillCult 3 жыл бұрын
Possibly. Probably earlier than just letting the seedling grow. this apple and most of mine are on dwarfing rootstocks to try to get fruit earlier. Some say putting them on established foundation trees is faster. So far that hasn't been the case for me, but I'm starting to experiment more with doing that in different ways to see if I can shorten the time.
@Keith-sj3hd
@Keith-sj3hd 3 жыл бұрын
In a previous video you talked about an apple variety called Maypole that was extremely red - in the bark, leaves, fruit, everything. I wonder, if you grafted stuff onto a Maypole tree, would you get some additional red pigment in the scion's fruit? If the scions are getting all their nutrients and water from the Maypole rootstock, wouldn't some pigment get transferred along with that...?
@SkillCult
@SkillCult 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think that is too likely. this tree is already probably grafted onto bud 9, a dwarfing rootsock that also matches that description.

what is the name of the tool you use to measure the sweetness of fruit? my apples should start to produce in the next year or two! i just cant wait. i have thinking that those apples / fruit that wont make a perfect apple they should be able to be used to process into jellies, juice, or butters!
@SkillCult
@SkillCult 3 жыл бұрын
It's called a brix refractometer. You should get one that you can calibrate to compensate for temperature using distilled water. Some are temp compensated automatically, but I"m wary that they are accurate. Just don't get the cheapest one. The first one I got I had to send back. This is the one I got, which I've been happy with,but it was cheaper then. amzn.to/3dpZwi1 Not really a necessary tool for regular growers, but for someone like me testing new varieties and breeding it's kind of important.

I need grenadine scions. Can I buy them from you? I live in Europe.
@SkillCult
@SkillCult 3 жыл бұрын
no, but they are there already. I know they are in Nigel deacon's collection and many others probably have them by now. What you should do is set up a Euro scion trading website so you all can find each other and get stuff that is already over there, or new stuff that comes in without trading internationally on a regular basis. It is an actual risk to farming economics and home growers to be regularly shipping stuff back and forth across continents. My new varieties and everything else will eventually make it over there, but I don't normally ship scions to other continents.
@flugschulerfluglehrer
@flugschulerfluglehrer 3 жыл бұрын
@@SkillCult Ok. I see. The problem here is that we have so many languages. At least for Germany I know of a trading website for heritage plants. But thank you for the tip. I will ask my way through. I really want to have this Grenadine. Btw: Have you tried a Grenadine x Grenadine cross?
@SkillCult

@@SkillCult I’ve been considering this. If I cannot produce seeds from Grenadine x Grenadine, I would go back to Surprise (a likely ancestor of Grenadine) or even to niedzwetskyana apples. But as my mother used to say. You can not know unless you try.
@SkillCult
@SkillCult 3 жыл бұрын
@@flugschulerfluglehrer I don't think I would ever actually do gren x gren. It's not a very good apple in most ways. I"m after the red flesh and the flavor. I've crossed i with other red flesh that are higher quality overall, such as rubaiyat and pink parfait, both probably derived from the same red fleshed parent, but less mealy and more reliable. What I've been up to is injecting better genes into the line so that I can make crosses of crosses. I already use a seedling Appleoosa (gren x lady williams) much more than grenadine as a parent. Soon I'll have more pollen of those crosses available so we are making progress, rather than everyone having to start from scratch. I'm not sure what I'll have this year, but hopefully some. depends on the bloom.
