My old Sailplane (H-301 Libelle) had one too...and trust me, it worked REALLY good. Close to, too good.

I didn't catch this 7 months ago, but the Buff fully loaded weighs 488,000 pounds at unstick, not 265,000 pounds they said in this video. That means its engine start weight is about 520,000 pounds. It would burn 32,000 pounds of fuel during its taxi and takeoff roll. In the 'G' model I flew in the 70s, part of those gross weight numbers were 10,000 pounds of distilled water we injected into the engines during takeoff to get the lumbering beast off the ground. The 'H' model didn't need water because its engine thrust was/is 17,000 pounds per engine. Ours in the 'G' was only around 14,700 pounds per engine with water for only 90 seconds then back to 9700 pounds per engine. It made it real tricky during our Guam takeoffs during the Vietnam conflict. The Guam runway was a hundred feet lower in the middle of the runway. So the last half of our takeoff rolls were up hill. The 'H' models had no problem and would continue to accelerate. Our airspeed indicator tended to stop halfway up the hill.

I don't believe the TF-33 engines on the 'H' model BUFF can do the reverse thrust thing to help slowing. Perhaps the two engines together preclude that option. I know the B52G I flew didn't have that option. Besides, that's what the drag chute is for.

H models don't have water injection either. They have turbofan engines unlike the earlier models that had turbojets.

Right. They could take off from Guam without any problem. The 'G;s I flew even with water injection had problems. But if you are knowledgeable about 'H's, that are becoming 'J's with new engines and electronics, do they have an actual closed-door bathroom? I notice in several of these B52H clips that there are female crew members. The 'G' model I flew didn't have a bathroom. It had a honey bucket in the aisle next to periscopic sextant nav station with a pee-can downstairs in back of the nav stations. I cannot imagine that working for the women. Just curious. Those new engines will extend possible mission lengths even with fewer air refuelings.

@@larryrobertson4099 All my time is in G's. They got rid of us gunners before women were aloowed to fly combat aircraft. I've never been in an H model but from what I understand the just rigged up some kind of curtain that they can use for privacy on the honey bucket. I think the instructor EW now sits in the gunners old seat.

I got out in 1977 while gunners were still part of the crew in 'G's. In 'G's, you never flew the tail but at Castle AFB while I was in training, we flew 'F's and gunners were in the tail. They tried to put me in 'D's but I was too short at 5'7". That seat only had two positions, up at an angle back and down at an angle forward. The 'F' had four positions. The 'G' had six positions. The EC47 I flew in 'Nam fit me perfectly. People were smaller in the 40's...

Hey. Hey. I'm surprised that the US Army doesn't address wastewater after decontamination. That's kind of a half-assed solution. Contaminated wastewater is a source of further contamination. Soldier protection is also inadequate. See how they do it in the Czech Republic 🇨🇿. We have mobile decontamination units that deal with decontamination of equipment and people in a much more sophisticated way 👍

7:30 The dark trails are not from water injection. The B-52H does not have water injection. The dark trails are because the powerplants are one of the oldest designs and they are inefficient. Terribly inefficient, and so the unburned fuel makes a smokey trail. The new model powerplants should eliminate the smoke trail.

@rael5469
@rael5469 9 ай бұрын
It doesn't. But I wonder if they've worked out a reverse thrust scheme for the new powerplants? ....since they have reverse thrust on the other aircraft they are installed on.
