One of my favorite budget meals is white rice with canned chicken and turkey gravy, with some vegetables mixed in. It's lot like chicken pot-pie, but you don't have crust that'll get all goopy. It's amazing, but really high in sodium, so that's something to look out for. I posted this elsewhere, but if this isn't too expensive, maybe consider it. Get the real big bag of dried white rice. Cooks just the same and when you put it into a sealable tupper-ware container, it'll last years. We've still got about 80% of a bag in a container and I bought it almost a year BEFORE the pandemic. Good luck to you!

@@idontexist3006 What I like to do is get the bigger cans of the chicken. The ones that look to be about twice the size of your average can of tuna. One can of that, and I think about a 16oz jar of gravy. One cup of rice should be enough.

In all my years I have never used ground turkey but just yesterday I got some on sale ....2 tubes for $2.50.....cannot get much cheaper, and with 3 teen boys you have to have a decent amount of food for dinner so I thought good time to try.

Ground Turkey in California seems to have more regulations. The stuff Mr. Wolfe used would be hard to get around here. Standard price is $2.50 to $3.00 a pound, sale price sometimes $2.33 - $2.39. Ground pork is usually about the same price range, but beef (even the cheapest, fatty stuff) almost never gets below $4.

Years ago when we had 4 hungry teenagers at home, I used to buy the Jennie-O Ground turkey at Sam's club because it was way cheaper than hamburger. Well, my husband isn't a fan of poultry. So, I would always brown the meat in batches & put it in the freezer for later meals, so to disguise that it was ground turkey instead of ground beef, to each batch, as I browned it, I would add a tsp of beef stock concentrate (like better than bouillon) & a tsp of browning & seasoning sauce. The finished browned ground meat had a darker color & beefier flavor & no one ever complained about "not liking ground turkey"!

@bethenecampbell6463
@bethenecampbell6463 3 жыл бұрын
@@kimjong-un7573 Granny Smiths are a nice tart, sweet, crisp combination. When I make stuffing for Thanksgiving I always put this in with the celery and onion. The slight acidity acts as a tiny palate cleanser amongst the gravy and butter that end up on your fork. You can't use just any green apple. It has to be a variety that has a balance between tart and sweet and one that doesn't turn to mush when cooked. Granny Smith apples function similarly to cranberry sauce/relish in this case by providing a balance against richer, fattier elements. You want the acid. This is why cranberry relish has orange juice and zest. Seriously, next time you do a dish with turkey and gravy try a little apple in the stuffing. You might be surprised!

@@sherylcascadden4988 Sage definitely gives that Thanksgiving vibe, but it doesn't take much! I think it makes a difference if you use fresh or dried. It was day after Thanksgiving delicious! Your stuffing recipe sounds 😋 yummy.

@Losttoanyreason 3 жыл бұрын
Love this! It's a thanksgiving pot pie! LOL FYI, if you will let the water boil away in the pan, (takes longer, 10-20 minutes depending on how much there is). Then you can actually brown the meat with the rendered fat and any fat added that is in the pan instead of merely boiling or steaming it just long enough to be done. Most people make the same mistake with any ground meat they cook. It was certainly the way I was taught. They then discard any liquids in the pan assuming it's all fat but it isn't. It's mostly water but it does contain flavors that have been extracted from the meat. If you cook it until all the water is gone that flavor stays with the meat instead of being thrown out with the grease. Anyway browning the meat after the water has boiled away greatly enhances the flavor. After the meat is properly browned, then you can add the veggies and they will help clean the fond from the bottom of the pan from the proper browning adding even more flavor.

Would love to see a show on how to use some of the items given from the pantries. Yes, I know not everyone has access to a pantry and not every pantry is a good one. We have a wonderful local pantry in our very rural area- well thought out and well distributed whole meals. However, not all pantries can do this. So I am referring mainly to the ones that do not distribute "whole" meals. Thanks again for what you do and how you do it!

You're awesome! What I would do when the ground meat develops so much water, is to just let the water cook off until the fat starts sizzling. Sometimes, that requires a bit of olive oil or other oil. Once the water has cooked off, all that flavor concentrates and the meat becomes excellent. Only when the meat is brown do I add the onions and other vegetables and go through the evaporation again. Thank you for your recipes. They are life savers for us.

I was raised in the 60s and 70s and many of these meals were a regular staple, some I have never had, I cook some to this day not to save money but because they taste so darn good, although saving money, especially now is not a bad thing. Thank You Mr. and Mrs. Wolfpit for putting these videos together.

As ever, Deity Of Your Preference bless you for this series. As my granny might say* “to mak’ a muckle oot o’ a mickle is the work o’ Saints” And to those of us with more brass in pocket? This shows you the basics. If he can make a tasty dish using cheap ingredients, imagine what you could do with pricier goods. You’ve no excuse now ;)

I bought three halved turkey breasts post thanksgiving this past year at an absurdly low price and froze them, like $0.91 per lb. I've been using them in simple casseroles for my family over the past months and do not regret that purchase.

@ Passion for food, lol, good one Graham my good friend, no joke here, I think with no white meat from the breast & dark meat with all that liquid, Larry might have got dark meat with innards & the bladder with all that liquid, so might have been turkey piss if no water was added, lol

When my kids were young the mothers on our street bought in bulk together. For example, we would buy our eggs at the restaurant supply house in ten dozen boxes. It cost @$7.50. so each one of us got 2 dozen eggs for $1.50. they were selling for over $2 a dozen at that time. We did the same with ground beef, bacon and spaghetti.

I'm still cooking with ground turkey even with steady cash flow now. I just got used to it. The water evaporating is just like, ten minutes where I can zone out. Yes it boils, but once it evaporates it leaves oil behind, this particular brand does brown well.

Have been using ground turkey for a while. I mix in one sausage for more taste. Then I pretty much do the rest of your recipe and put mashed potatos on top. Modified shepherd's pie. I also use left over meat in white sauce and top with stuffing. DELISH

One of my favorite budget meals is white rice with canned chicken and turkey gravy, with some vegetables mixed in. It's lot like chicken pot-pie, but you don't have crust that'll get all goopy. It's amazing, but really high in sodium, so that's something to look out for.

If I don't have gravy, a can of condensed cream of whatever (mushroom is my favorite) soup and a quarter cup of milk instead of fully reconstituting makes a quick faux gravy. Any veggies you like/have on hand, and you're good to go.

Yeah, I've made a similar dish with Peas, carrots, Turkey (wasn't ground though), and Pillsbury biscuits. Same basic principle except I took the biscuit dough and broke it into much smaller balls and placed it on top before baking. Turned out pretty well.

I did not know people frowned upon ground turkey. We use it to make tacos regularly. Cook up the ground turkey in a skillet, drain off the fat, add half a jar of salsa, stir, then add cheese on top and cook until melted. Spoon it into a taco shell and add whatever toppings you can afford. Slice up a head of green lettuce then top with sour cream and a bit of salsa. Dinner done in 20 minutes and a family favorite.
