I think you forgot foreign languages, sometimes it is a plus within any enterprise, because at this moment we are dealing with the globalization process and international trade. We may consider speak to another language, because it will allow you to get best-paid jobs, it will help you to open your mind at any kind of culture and learn much kind of things and best practices in accounting from other people around the world. I recently graduated in accounting in México and I'm also learning english, it is nice to hear people like you that helps me to develop this skill, I know that you are not an English teacher, but I've learned new vocabulary with you. I apologize for my bad english. Best regards from México. 😁

This is encouraging, for my experience with H&R Block has been helpful in tandem with my Penn State MBA. I definitely agree that everyone must learn sales! It's much better to know sales to cope with "overqualified". I agree with public speaking as well, for I am a Toastmaster since 1996. I concentrated in operations in the MBA. When I was unemployed, I even took courses in machine operations, jobs that beg for workers. Once again, my degrees scared off the employers. So, it's back toward some of the mentioned topics I haven't covered.

Accounting Defined as "the action or process of keeping financial accounts". This list, past Finance, is done. Your job as an accountant is to record business transactions in an orderly manner. The managers of the business will handle Supply Chains, Business Strategy, and worry about Organizational Behavior. As a matter of fact, a whole department called Human Resources Management would do that. Yes, laws and regulations are important, those that are on laws that deal with accounting such as GAAP rules, IRS rules, and SEC Rules. It's a general rule in Accounting to keep Politics out!! It keeps the books honest when you do this. Since when is Excel considered Computer Programming? The list from Science thru Art is not required either. When is the last time you applied for an Accounting job and you are asked, "In addition to your excellent accounting skills, how is your art skills"? If it was your job to do all these "SKILLS" in a job you would never get anything done. Your job as an accountant is to Debit (DR) the DR's and Credit (CR) the CR's, and process the tax forms, generate the financial statements for manages to do the rest of the skills on this list.

Patrick I wish you well but offer my forecast. Almost all routine jobs from medical records management to lawyers and to accounting are scheduled for AI replacement. And it might happen in just a couple of years. Firms that now employ 40 accountants will find 2 are enough if they automate collection of data (point of sale, meter reading, any job that uses a form they can scan directly in the database) or any job that amounts to a decision tree like medical diagnosis or auto repair diagnosis. Do some research before deciding.

Hi Zach. You mentioned about learning programming such as visual basic for excel. And recently, I also heard about Accountants needing to learn Python. What do you think about this? Thanks.
@WolvesAndFinance6 жыл бұрын
Any computer education is helpful, but in accounting I would not say that Python is as useful as VBA programming. On a practical level, you have to deal with Excel spreadsheets that use VBA macros all the time. If you understand the programming, it makes your life a lot easier.

Was ready to give a thumbs down and a major review but he FINALLY mentioned computer programming to the level of task automation. The reality is, the accounting industry DOES not care about its employees, just reference the 80's when the Apple 2 came out and when any software came out by Intuit. They all refused to encourage and facilitate software capabilities and instead pushed learning how to perform manual tasks "faster" and large percentages of devote employees lost their jobs because it does not matter if you have a CPA license and 5+ years of experience if 1 person can do 3 times the work output that you can. Concepts are just the bread to a sandwich, technical capability is the meat and vegetables. Who would you draft to your weekly basketball pick up game, a physicist with a mostly useless Ph.D and not coordination or a guy who can actually run, dribble, shoot, and pass the ball so others can score when that is the RIGHT decision for the team? Its a no brainer. But even today in 2021 the AICPA's CEO Brian M and most universities STILL do not include the querying and programming languages needed to be able to perform accounting tasks at a rate that will allow one to get their work finished quickly and without human error much less practical experience using the productivity software designed to perform accounting activities which companies WILL NOT hire you if you do not have experience using because they themselves can barely use it. All business functions should simply switch to teaching "data analytics" and have the concentration be a slight flavor of business that the student wants like accounting, finance, marketing, etc. Because the reality is, it does not matter if you got a 3.5+ gpa in college and participated in accounting society events, you will not be able to get a job in audit if someone else's productivity in verifying and auditing accounts is 1000:1 against you. If you are spending 70 hours manually auditing and I am finishing up the same work in 30 hours, I have 40 more hours a week that I can spend learning the specific concepts needed to become more valuable to the market. A business professional without task automation programming skills is like a carpenter/contractor/interior house remodeler who can't use power tools, you simply will not be able to output enough to get a job. Yes accounting will always need a person to review and make decisions but if your firm has 100 associates and 30 of them can do the work that the 100 non-programming associates do, then YOU are out of a job, or wont be able to find one if you are graduating from school. Many accounting partners and managers STILL to this day do not value programming and are following suit with their 80s counterparts by not transitioning their workforce; the people that they were put in charge to protect, mentor, and develop, and over the next 5 years the available jobs in accounting will again be reduced. The accounting field and the business field itsself is becoming a smaller and smaller portion of the needed skills yet the business industry and universities are doing NOTHING to adapt. Take a detour on a bachelors, or a masters, or the CPA exam, and instead learn a SQL dialect, python, and a data visualization application Like Power BI, Tableau, Qlicsence, etc for 8 months and learn to be able to ACTUALLY perform ETL on data, create scripts/programs for repetitive tasks, and present it all in a form that the STEM incompetent managers, MBA's and Chief Officers can understand and with 5 years of experience you can replace those toxic people in your company and get on to doing what we all came here to do...business.
