This was the absolute perfect explanation of everything. As someone who was on the same call, it was definitely strange to see the official press release come out. Problem is the bike industry as a whole tried to inflate the median bike cost to astronomical levels, but everyone is not a dentist. It was always going crash at some point, with or without covid madness. I'd like to see a return to more companies making sensible steel bikes that are affordable and will last a lifetime, and then the disposable alloy and plastic bikes can occupy the market for people who want a new bike every year.
@CJGrand118 күн бұрын
Alloy and carbon fiber is not disposable. They raised the entry level of both hardtails and full squish bikes to an absurd price point.
@lifebehindbarsmtb18 күн бұрын
Part of the problem aside from manufacturers raising prices on the bikes during Covid is the people who went and actually purchased the bikes for thousands more than what they should’ve been. To think people are gonna pay $6800 for a $4400 bike is just insane and a lot of people got taken advantage of.
@princelinus832017 күн бұрын
It's always been like that here. People rationalize everything when all you needed was a simple hardtail to start off with. But those decisions were steered away from companies and youtubers pushing for an agenda. How many youtubers exist that are actually popular pushing for entry level mtn bikes? Probaly 1? Maybe 2?
@rondavis323216 күн бұрын
When manufacturing shut down in China, Taiwan, Vietnam, and other places where bicycles are manufactured, which despite what the MAGA world FEELS, i can assure you absolutely happened, less bicycles get made. Covid drove huge demand for outdoor activities and accessories, which were in short supply. Manufacturing ramped up accordingly, and stock levels grew. Demand wasn't permanent and inventory soon exceeded it. Supply and demand is not a new concept.

I was chatting with the guys at the bike shop about this. We were talking about GT because we’d both seen your video, being from NH, everyone into MTB knows Phil! They don’t carry GT at the shop, but the owner mentioned that business has been slightly better now than it was in 2019. However, big sales boost during the relief checks period, and people weren’t working, and started picking up hobbies and this was a bonus and if anyone thought that would go on forever would be mistaken. It probably comes down to poor communications within the company and departments of the company not seeing how it affects other departments. For example, I was doing some work for a company in Australia. Without going into too much detail, they made a change to their site to fix a minor issue. Soon after, I started noticing complaints about the change. It turned out no one had informed the owner about this decision, and he only found out when I brought it to his attention. I compiled a list explaining how this change could backfire and presented it to him. The issue was resolved within minutes after that. This just shows a lack of communication between departments led to a poorly weighted decision. The fix addressed a minor problem, but the risks far outweighed the benefits. If it hadn’t been caught, it could have seriously harmed the company.

I've been following your journey for seven years now, and I've always enjoyed your content-especially the race blogs and those longer, in-depth videos on KZbin. It's genuinely sad to see the GT brand put on pause. I bought a GT Zaskar years ago and later upgraded to a Force Carbon frame, both heavily influenced by your promotion. They were incredible bikes, though I had some struggles with the lower mounting bolt snapping a few times until I upgraded to a titanium bolt and better flip chip hardware. GT holds a special place in my heart, not just because of the bikes, but also the nostalgia-I started with BMX racing as a kid before moving to motocross, and GT was always the brand for me. I really hope you find a new sponsor who can support you in getting back into racing-you deserve it. Thanks for the inspiration over the years.

Hey Phil! I’m a rider from Quebec City, and I wanted to share a few tips now that I’ve started exploring the new Quebec region “fatduro” trend for fat biking this winter. You should definitely check out Sentiers du Moulin, Centre Castor, or E47. These are fantastic spots, and some summer trails you might already know are open for “fatduro” riding. It’d be awesome to see you try it for the first time! Here’s a key tip: winter studded tires are an absolute must-they make a huge difference. Many fat bikes come with summer tires designed for beach sand, so make sure to upgrade if needed. Also, keep in mind that fat biking is very weather-dependent. Some days the trails are perfect, but other times, you might ride for four days and only enjoy one. Timing is everything, so plan carefully!

Lol you are on a bike during the long white months so...better than nothing! 😊

As a corporate marketing executive and having worked with large brands at a Sr executive level my experience is when a brand liquidates and lays off staff they are done. They might sell off intellectual property and website, mailing lists or leftover scraps afterwards as that is easy to transfer. It is very very hard to restart a brand with no revenue for a year, no inventory to make new revenue, no workers to sell or even process orders. Basically whoever would be doing this would be doing it from scratch or would have to already have infrastructure to take it on. GT might live on as a brand with all new owners but I highly doubt it will resemble anything like what we have now. I wouldn't be surprised if it became a brand like Schwinn or some rebranded cheap Chinese bike.
@-tr0n18 күн бұрын
I wouldn't be surprised if they park the name in case MTB booms again and they can cash in on nostalgia. I feel a lot of companies overspent and a lot of companies got screwed by the chain during the 2020 boom, but most people didn't continue riding obviously and allllll those new bike purchases just kinda sit. These new people aren't buying next years's model. That said, lots of these smaller impact companies are easier to shut down in anticipation of a market turn as well. Nothing says GT or any other brands actually did anything wrong. Accountants and consultants run the world and put value on all sorts of shit that doesn't matter or exist.

I'm still riding my mini-Enduro'ized Alloy 2019 Sensor, and if you have either a Force or Sensor, and do your own servicing on the bike, it's obvious that the front triangle (on at least the alloy version) were identical for both Force and Sensor models - only the rocker and rear end were different to account for the extra travel between the two bikes. Interesting insight by Phil about GT wanting to 'Bronco' a sub brand within the brand, as the two bikes were split at birth. Very interesting indeed. I'm still very fond of the brand, and think their performance mtb bikes are terrific (and still are today)

In AUS, GT was always tied back by the Distributer, GT Dealers ( bike shops) all had the same issue with Distributer getting bikes in a timely manner and then any warranty issues would take many weeks to sort. leaving a bad taste in the riders mouths. and even though the bikes were awesome at the trail head when asked about the bikes the riders would say "fantastic but getting it took ages......" when people want to buy a new bike, they want it quickly. I hope you figure out a way to continue what you do.

I think some of these things help viewers feel how you are riding more, and even get a better idea of how to ride like you. If you are talking about, for example, on a particularly tricky section, what kind of techniques you are focusing on, like, keeping the weight on the front wheel, no brakes, let the bike move, maintain speed, weight on the pedals, hands, pulling with arms etc, idk. Hey Phil. It sounds like this is a stressful time for you and understandably so. Sorry that you’re dealing with this. Just know that you’ve provided a lot of inspiration for me as a dad trying to get my kids into mountain biking years ago. Your original “skills” videos were infectious and fun and still are! I’m sure that it’s tough to come up with new content along those lines all of the time. Maintaining a KZbin channel sounds like it’s a lot harder than most people think it is. I believe that God has a plan for each one of us Phil, even when things seem really bleak. You have the ability to inspire riders to get out and try new things. In my humble opinion, if you focus on that, you will be successful no matter what. BTW, ABQ, New Mexico is generally snow free and ridable year round… don’t tell anyone…

I really like GT, i have a sensor miniduro 😆 and i love it, but also there is another company that i really like and that's Kona. I am not an industry insider and i don't know how things are going after the founders bought it back, but in my eyes as a brand seems to have some similarities with GT, the legacy, the cool factor, not too big, both in a restart phase (until recently for GT) etc. I think it would be a nice partnership if it ever happened. About your future content, building or riding, if i may, i think most people in youtube mtb sphere want to see content that makes them feel good, but also to look up to and learn stuff through it, that they can replicate on scale. So in that context, audience wise, riding makes a lot more sense as content. No matter what you choose, i wish you all the best and i will continue to enjoy and support your excellent work.

Go independent on frame sponsorship! That way you get what you truly want from a frame. You offer so much to the world of MTB, and are a true ambassador of the sport, as is sen in your videos. The imprint you have left on the next gen of riders is very apparent. Any company who does decide to work with you, is smart, and fortunate. As you said no rush, enjoy things for what they are right now. I have little doubt something will work out in short order.

About 2 years ago I was looking to get a GT Force and I went to 3 different GT Dealers and not one of them actually had a bike for me to try, at any trim level. All BMX and low end bikes. I still have my '97 GT Thermoplastic STS and a 95' RTS-1 that I will keep forever.

Im absolutely crushed, GT is one of my all-time favorite bike brands, I fell in love with there bikes since 2017, I purchased an 2018 Avalanche, and rode it for 10000 Kilometers before a crack developed on the lower right seatstay. i brought it into my bikeshop, and had it warrentied. GT sent a complete build the most updated Avalanche model from this year, for free. the warranty was best in the game. and I'm now happly riding a brand new whip for what I imagined for many many years to come. was even considering purchasing the GT Grade Carbon as an endurance/gravel/touring rig, the unconvental design of the grade is incredible comfortable. i had test ride on the 2020 model, and found the design to provide a perceivably more compliant ride quality than a rigid frame. GTs legacy will be one of continuous innovation, and in my personal experience as a customer, I felt they always put the customer experience first. This loss hurts my soul and I'm desperately hoping to see them return from the ashes.

I assume you have contacts that could help you navigate the waters of opening a bike park, but the first thought I had was reaching to Jarrod Harris. He took a passion and a hard turn from his career to open Jarrod's Place in NW Georgia that has been well received.

looks like tough times may be on the horizon for yall...best guess would be to get a resume together to present to future sponsors. you have a huge online presence which would be a HUGE plus for you, to help promote the brand(s). you could also do as Matt and Juno Jones have done and push the Square space stuff as they pay them very well. online bike shops such as Jenson, competitive cyclists, ect have riders to do reviews, ect...gotta be creative and diligent during these times..good luck bro.

How about the blue hills near Boston? I heard they have a new owner. I wonder if a bike park could be an option. I would love one at wachusett but I don’t think they would let that happen in that forest. Culinary arts, business, marketing, fluent French.. I’m impressed Phil!

If a bike company doesn't sponsor you they are silly missing out on epic marketing
