When you change the gusset leather, add a D ring on each side. That way, it can have a shoulder strap clipped on with like a dog leash type clip on both ends.

How about some suggestions for your "Poisons!" In your small bottles, table salt, garlic salt, pink salt, sea salt. Black pepper, Lemon pepper, Cayenne Pepper. Cinnamon, cinnamon and sugar, really any and all spices would work as salable's. Sugar, powdered sugars, agava, (both in powered and liquid forms) and brown sugar in a small bag. Honey of several flavors. Whiskey, rum, and vanilla flavorings. Coffee, creamers, and flavorings. Chocolate powders, (and maybe something like Hershey's syrups.) You will note, that all of these are available in the closest Kroger and none are particularly dangerous, (Other than the Cayenne pepper and Cinnamon, and those only when used with malicious intent!) I am not a member of any LARP, but, I could see that those who are would like to have these spices for their meals, and would pay well for access to them! Well done, great pouch!

My initial thought when I saw the applique was "oh, that's a snake." I love that bag! The only thing I would do differently (besides follow your advice and use a different material for the gusset) is I would make that little tab o' leather that you used to keep it shut into a forked tongue. Cause..... snek.

Things I would change since you did ask: 1) instead of stitching the chrome-tan directly, I would have sandwiched it between the 4oz and another 4oz U-frame of the same contours and made the gusset a bit wider to wrap around the U-frame. Yes it doubles the thickness but it also changes the stress points and doubles the rip resistance of the sewn gusset. 2) Stitching groover tool. Set it the distance and tighten it, trace the edge and it gives you a consistent groove for the stitching to be placed into and a guide for the fork tines to follow. 3) Rub in mink oil on the veg-tan after wet-forming has dried but before dying. This gives you a waterproof base before the dye is applied. You could apply it after but you would need to reapply regularly. Make sure to follow the directions. 4) Resoline the dyed areas once dry. A clear resoline will allow you to place it on any color, but they make colored resoline too. This helps to seal the dye and the leather even more. I am not sure if it can be used on chrome-tan though.

You've mentioned in a few videos that you worry about breaking glass vials and flasks. A fairly simple solution to this is making canisters for them, copper pipe is good for vials, for flasks copper is still doable but a leather wrap would be easier.

I would only make two adjustments! 1. A leather loop over the vials for a pen and 2. Put a wide but small pocket on the gusset on the inside to hold things under the cover flaps. Could cover stitches by using a second layer of gusset leather also takes care of the weakness of the material your worried about

Duuuuude this is one I definitely have to make!!! This pouch is so cool!!! And the green and black are definitely my colors 🤩🤩 The only thing I might do different/ not even different, but just add to this design, I would put a D hook on each side, just to be able to hook a long shoulder strap, to wear like a small shoulder bag, or wear it like a back pack.

Gussets should have inside pockets for thin slips of gold/silver plates or papers/maps (or local fishing/hunting license from provisional constabulary/governor, etc), emergency cloth/wound sewing needle & thread (etc) kit on one side, lockpics or firestarter materials (always good to have some dry cotton wrapped charcoal on hand for getting a fire going....

Instead of using glass vials and running the risk of them breaking what about using metal ones? Some of the energy shots here are sold in small metal bottles that could be used instead of the glass 10:17 . They would crush instead of leaving finger piercing shards.

You could keep the front as one whole piece by flaring the gusset gradually from the bottom to the top on both sides. May allow for more intricate decoration, would make the front stronger, saves a few steps, extra straps, and would still open it up like a wedge, with no gaps on the sides, and close flat. The only thing would be to train the gusset leather to fold inward at the sides, when closed, in the same way a paper bag does. You could actually do that twice to keep the main pocket closed while only opening the front vial pocket. Or open both and it could hang open even further. Double gusset, imagine a section of accordion or an expanding file, wider wedge, many more opportunities for pockets.

One thing that I've been trying to figure out (after investigating Mongolian style boots) is how to do a raised appliqué without a form. From what I can tell, because they tend to do heavy decorations on their boots, the cobblers there have pre-set forms for popular designs. So they must wet form thin leather, push it into the negative and stretch it with the positive side. Then they fill the gap with a string or twine. Since I'm one person, and only want/need one pair of boots, I'm trying to figure out how to do the form without a... form. Just raising the design a handful of times for each piece.

Have you considered air dry or oven baked clay? You would be able to make it whatever shape you want and I think it would be sturdy enough to stretch leather around. Two part epoxy clay is a thing too if the basic stuff isn't strong enough
@KumaTsunami
@KumaTsunami 11 күн бұрын
@SLorraineE It's a good thought, I suppose my main issue is that I don't want to bury the time needed to make something I'd use maybe twice and then pitch. But I also may not have a choice in that. But I do have other projects I'd need the clay for and would also be mostly one-offs. I think I just talked myself into it. >_> Thank you.

Make your design out of leather and rubber cement it to a cardboard backing (you want something like the shiny side of a cereal box so the rubber cement peels away clean afterwards). Then form your leather over the design on the cardboard. If it's a thicker leather, transfer your design to the leather, get it wet enough to form and begin the process by working the design with a tool to stretch the area that will have the filler. Then you can glue the top layer directly to the leather filler, and once it's dry peel the whole thing off and line it with whatever material you choose. The leather form stays in place to keep the embossing raised.

Very cool looking. But I think making the sides like older concertina style handbags would've worked better than the clip bands as those look too fiddly and would become annoying after a while, whereas the concertina sides would fold in by themself and allow for further expansion upon opening. Still love it though, that green and black combo is stunning as always.

You could replace the gusset with a wedge shaped accordion fold so the whole thing opens up as needed. The exterior peaks of the folds are the joined seam of two pieces. Total side gusset would probably be three separate wedges.

You should make a modern EDC pouch/carrier bag/messenger bag of leather or canvas. There is no reason you can not spoil yourself with something you can have and use daily outside of fair and cosplay. Maybe big enough for a laptop or large tablet and things you need or want. Maybe something simple that can cover both roles. Like black and some pressing designs. I always see pirate guilds. I'm fascinated with encryption, messages and assassination attempts. no one ever make a guild for that. I thought of poisons or potions that are actually electrolyte powders and vitamin B drinks. for after party recovery.

Such a slick pouch. I think I would have elastic instead of leather for the bit that lets the front open up so it can open wider if needed. It would give quicker access to the vials if it sorta opens by gravity. I would need to be more cautious about not just spilling the contents when it swings open though. I'll have to consider the pro/con more though. I am definitely making this at some point. I don't quite have all the leather I would need on hand right now. Although I bet I could sub some parts for some reinforced fabric I have on hand. Heck I think I could do almost the whole thing in fabric. The applicay (I cant spell words) could be swapped with a real neat fabric pattern I picked up that's very alchemical looking.

Actual construction. Well, you missed the loop on the back to carry your dagger/eating knife vertically, which a great number of Medieval pouches had. All the tops of the 'pockets' should have either an edging, or just the edge of the base leather, turned over and stitched - which stops the opening of the pocket/compartment from stretching and getting out of shape. Most Men's pouches hung from 2 straps formed in one with the front and back of the pouch - it was a long oval of leather with a square-ish hole to form the hanging straps as well as the front flap and back panel. Based on surviving leather from waterlogged deposits, a lot of original pouches had an internal linen lining which had several pockets or compartments stitched into it - even under the flap there could be one or two comparments with a common slot for access, again, reinforced with a rollover and stitching. The lining could also have extended a bit and have had a drawer string closure, although no examples of this seem to have survived. And the 2-3 leather draw string pouchlets under the flap on the front of the pouch. When I have made pouches with a gusset, I stitched the gusset with the gusset's skin side to the outer pieces 'flesh' or rough side, so when everything is right side out the exposed edge of the gusset in inside the pouch, which leaves you with a neater, burnished edge showing on the outer pieces.

I love this pouch so much! Excellent work! I run a plague doctor in my D&D campaign and this SCREAMS plague doctor! I know this is a lot to ask but have you ever thought about selling some of these things? Like, hypothetically, what would it cost to purchase this bag? I would love to make one myself but I don't have any of the tools. So I would first have to purchase all the tools, then on top of that I'd have to buy all the leather and such. In my mind if may be just as cheap (or expensive) to just purchase a finished bag. Anyway, love it a lot! Keep up the great work! Love the channel! Thanks so much!

When you update the gusset, try a tapered form, wider at the top, so than when you flop the front down, the sides wll allow it to hinge open, yet remain closed on the sides. If you'e industrius, work a tapeded pleat or three into the sides. This also possibly eliminates your side snap kludge,

A little over-engineered, but I love all the pockets! I would have cut the gussets in three separate pieces (bottom and two sides), then cut the sides at an angle so it folds open a bit farther But having the snaps there does give some more control over that opening, so there's definitely a trade off there. Good stuff, as always!

I dont know if this is something you would be interested in, but I "planned" out a pouch that I havent made yet, that has a double open zipper. Kind of like the reverse of what a standard backpack has, where both zip pulls being on either side of the pouch has it closed, and you bring them together to open it. Im thinking for something that is an "ambidextrous, quick access" pocket for things that might need quick access to potentially save your life in a dangerous situation. Wheter thats medication or cordless hole punching technology. Im not sure how it would work, ir even the best way to assemble it. Like, can you put 2 pulls on the same "track," but backwards? Or would it be easier for me to use 2 separate tracks, with one opening to one side and one to the other? My main reason for wanting to make one vs buy one, is I havent found a fanny pack/belt pouch that didnt come with its own belt, and didnt have a lot of like MOLLE web or other tacti-cool designs on it. Which I don't want or need on this pouch.

I love the idea of the gusset helping hold everything in and blocking that little gap, but I feel like the extra length of gusset would get in the way while using the bag... My thought would be to curl the excess gusset back down and lock it into place leaving a half inch to an inch high loop of leather sticking up on the sides. That way when the top/lid is folded down, it pushes down on those loops like a gasket and seals the sides.

Get plastic test tubes from resturant supply store, like 50 of them for about 30 dollars. Cut them down to size with small pipe cutter.

What about putting more of the potion bottle holders across the inside of the top of the lid (Across the black section of leather)? They would also be stylishly displayed upon opening the pouch...

The instant you said you'd cut the gusset out of the lining leather I was saying "Oh, you should have used the heavier chrome tan for that!" The only other thing I'd do differently is to trim those long pointy bits to a blunter point that ends just past the stitching as they're going to curl up.

Instead of using belt loops, this would make a real nice handbag for someone so inclined with a strap linked to the folded over gusset. Or, look at the artwork in 5E DMG for the bag of holding, and put a strap with rings around the gusset to strengthen it and make a spot for clipped straps.

I use snaps on the belt loops so that I don’t have to take the belt off in order to put the pouch on or off. (On the bottom of the belt loops)

I'm making my first ren-faire type pouch right now. I make and sell a playing card case that operates on the same principles using 2-3oz veg tan, but this is just a bigger version with a heavier leather. I have minimal applique (and no extra pockets planned) so I'm hoping it all works out so I can make a bunch in different colors. I'll have to admit that I basically see a design I like and just eye-ball copy it, but you gotta start somewhere right?
