There have been numerous comments calling me out about mixing up a few years for these albums. I am aware of the mistake and totally own up to it. Nobody's perfect. Also, if you DO enjoy this style of music, I would strongly suggest checking out my interview with 3Teeth (kzbin.info/www/bejne/jInWl4qoj8Zkl5Y) and this review roundup that includes Dawn Of Ashes (kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2jFlHtve8Zjf9k). Two of my favorite more recent industrial metal bands around right now.

If I was to rank these I'd do it this way: S: Bites, VIVIsectVI, To Dark Park, Weapon, Remission A: Cleanse Fold And Manipulate, Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse, Last Rights B: Rabies, Mythmaker, The Process C: Handover D: The Greater Wrong of the Right I absolutely love their early 80's material. Remission and Bites are my two favorite albums of all time. Glass Houses, Last Call, Deadlines, and Sleeping Beast are just perfect. For this reason I also really enjoy Weapon and I think it's their most underrated record by fans. It's a return to their roots, and it's incredibly powerful given the band's history. I feel that TDP and VIVISectVI are defaulted to S tier. They are so immensely powerful and frightening that they deserve to be there. State Aid and Convulsion are two of the scariest songs ever written and I love them for that. Also Hospital Waste makes me think of the nightmare hospital section of Silent Hill 2 which is to this day complete nightmare fuel. Cleanse Fold and Manipulate Is my favorite of my A tier albums. I think Second Tooth and Tear Or Beat are some of their best songs. I love the first half of both Rabies and the Process, but they suffer from similar issues in my opinion. Two Time Grime and Death are my favorites from these. Mythmaker is a fine album and has some of the best electronic sounds of the genre. If I'm in the mood I'll listen from start to finish, but I sometimes find that it's a little too noisy. I would have a better opinion on HanDover if it was more accessible. I've only heard it once all the way through and it's the only album I don't own. Really not a fan of TGWotR. If I want to listen to something similar I'll listen to OhGr's Welt or Front Line Assembly's Implode. This is all just my opinion. Sorry for typing all of this out lol. Skinny Puppy's community is pretty small compared to some of their peers'. I'm 18 and there aren't many people my age that have even heard of them. Hopefully they put out an album soon and come back to the spotlight for a bit. OhGr's Tricks and Cevin's Resonance are both great albums so if they make a new album together I bet it will be great. Cheers

Wow, someone else besides me who's really high on their earliest stuff, hell yea! We agree on Mythmaker too, though i'd prob switch Handover & TGWOTR. Last Rights is my #1 all-time, and i might bump up Rabies to A with another relisten since it's been a long time for me, but we seem to share the same braincell on a lot of this haha

I enjoyed hearing your take on Skinny Puppy! Your perspective is thoughtful and insightful. My biggest disagreement was with Last Rights, which I consider to be their best album. I do agree that it shouldn't be an introduction to the band because, as you said, it's very experimental. I'm happy that you didn't trash The Process. So many people do, and I really like it. I'd rank Cleanse, Fold, and Manipulate higher personally; it's my second favorite. I completely agree that Too Dark Park is one of their best.

I got into Skinny Puppy right before The Process was released and was absolutely in love with it when I got it. Don't care what the purists would say. That album was in my discman on heavy rotation every day on my bus ride home from school. I was into industrial music, mainly anything Cleopatra records put out, but The Process changed me in ways nothing had or has since then.

Will not forget the 1st time that me and my friend friend listened to VIVIsectVI for the 1st time at a record store, we both loved the cover and thought it looked like a death metal album cover. We were both teens but once I put the cd on In my car we were never the same once we heard Dogshit😂😂😂We became huge industrial fans after listening to that record. So skinny puppy definitely played a huge role in my musical evolution.

Last rights really is a grower. I first picked it up in 98 or 99, and I didn't fully get it until probably within the last decade. Eventually, the chaos, insanity and relentless brutality of it clicks and for me, it went from being this almost unlistenable wtf noise collage to probably my favorite album in their catalog. It's less a collection of stand alone songs as much as it's the soundtrack to a violent and deranged mental breakdown.

I don’t know why, I loved Last Rights immediately. I love SP for their polyrhythms and walls of sound though, as well as their explorations of desolation (personal, environmental, etc.), so this album was perfection for me. So powerful, so gorgeous. Also TDP ties for me as top album.

I first heard last rights in 92 just as I was getting into NIN and KMFDM. It was way too much for me, I thought it was bloody awful but something kept me coming back to it, and it eventually grew into being my favorite all time album. Years later, I still consider the first half of it to be an unparalleled peak of industrial music but most of the second half to be just messing around a bit - something I later came to appreciate in acts like autechre.

Thank you for sharing your rankings and thank you for uploading anything SP related! I wish there was more of this on YT! Last Rights is my favorite from the first wave of Skinny Puppy albums, but it often changes to VIVIsectVI or TDP or Cleanse Fold and Manipulate, etc (you get the idea). From the new wave of SP albums for a long time it was The Greater Wrong of the Right, but recently I gave Weapon another chance after not hearing it for a while and I have to say it's really grown on me. Definitely my favorite of the newer albums.

Great overview of SP discography. Thanks for this. I'm glad you didn't trash The Process, it's one of my favorite albums, esp. Cult. I don't love everything Skinny Puppy released, but Worlock was my most played song of the decade 2010-2020. Some of their songs are just so powerful and deep, even after so many years they still sound fresh. They have this interesting aesthetic, but under all the gore and slime there is so much beauty. The synths often have great melodies.

My top 3, Weapon, Rabies, Last Rights. Handover has some great tracks. My first was Last Rights and in 1994 it was pretty much my favorite album of all time to that point. Wax Trax, Cleopatra, Zoth Ommog, fifth column , and other record labels.

I’m not sure why you don’t think Last Rights is a great album. Love in Vein is an awesome opener, and Killing Game? My God it’s like a Industrial Goth masterpiece! That piano and the organ on it is so classic. I’m my opinion one of their best ever songs. My gamer tag is Mirrorsaw. It’s not for the faint hearted let’s face it but I saw that tour and it was phenomenal. It’s the album I listen to most often but I also listen to Weapon a lot as well. VivisectVI and To Dark Park are my next go to albums. All of their albums have great moments on them. I like your ranking for the most part.

@@MetalTrenches I watched the video and good job as always. As I said, I became a fan in 96 with The Process. I actually bought my girlfriend the album and she bought me PigFace - Notes from the Underground. We ended up trading cause I loved SP so much and she was more of a passive fan. From there I went backwards with Brap 3&4 and then Last Rights, Too Dark Park and so on. I would say I'm probably in the minority that I would put The Process in the top tier with LR, TDP and VIVIVI.🤣 Brap 3&4 will always hold a special place in my heart just cause I heard it before the original material and it sounded so damn different and raw compared to The Process or any other music in 96 for that matter. I was introduced to Skinny Puppy in 1989 with Rabies. I was in the Ministry evolution of taste and this album blended well with Ministry's Land of Rape and Honey. When I read the liner nots for Rabies back then I saw it was partially produced by Alien Jourgensen (I chuckled because it was a pseudonym for Al) I enjoyed Rabies even more. I listened mostly to VIVIsectVI and Mind in heavy rotation during that time too. I lost touch with Too Dark Park and went back to listening to Skinny Puppy's catalog when they decided to reunite in 2000 for that one off concert in Europe. Last rights and The process were consistent in the SP sound but not really catchy as Too Dark Park. Their releases after The process I collected but may of listened to their entirety very rarely. Since 2023 will supposedly be their last tour (40th anniversary of the band) I'm glad to see their set list includes some material from their 2000 releases. Sounds good live. I'm going back to listen to Weapon and Mythmaker. Thank you for the review and rating their albums!

My first experience was SP was Too Dark Park and I frankly didn't get it at first. Keep in mind that I was 19, pretty much a total metal head and this "Industrial" thing was totally new to me. Later on I found Spasmolytic for $3 on CD and that completely changed how I heard them. It just clicked for me and made me able to revisit Too Dark Park to understand how amazing it was. Last Rights was the "new album" around the time I was getting into them and I can easily say I've spent so much time engrossed in the sounds on that release more than any other album of theirs. Curious if others have ever checked out the side project Hilt, which featured lighting guy Alan Nelson on vocals. "Journey To the Center Of the Bowl" is to me their best side album ever and one I probably have listened to more than any Skinny Puppy album. I just think it's that good.

The Rabies Remaster from 2004 is the CD you'd want to track down. Lower dynamic range, but everything about it is so much better otherwise that I don't care like I usually do, it sounds great! The original mastering from 1989 is horrible as you said. Muffled and inconsistent. Also how dare you not give a heart to Nature's Revenge, that Dale Plevin fretless bass bit is so great! (Just kidding, but I do love that song) Also I agree that Last Rights doesn't quite impress as much as the hype would suggest, Mirror Saw, Inquisition, and Scrapyard are great, and the other stuff is mostly good, but I always feel that the album drags a bit.... Lust Chance is the one I really think needed to be cut, boring and goofy.

At the end of the album's production, it was just cEvin. Frankly I'm astonished it came out at all.

Ooh, glad somebody did this! i'm probably an outlier among Puppy fans in preferring their earlier, more synthpop-tinged work over their first couple albums with Dwayne, and also in not quite seeing VIVIsectVI as GOAT material. My fav track from VIVIsect is actually Hospital Waste, if you can believe that lol Imagine you might be a bit of an outlier on The Process & to a lesser extent Rabies, though maybe there's been a reevaluation in more recent years i missed. Rabies does have two of their top 10 all-time songs imo so could see that getting more of a look. Torn between Last Rights and Mythmaker as my favourite Skinny Puppy album. Last Rights has a fantastic first half, gets a very experimental half way through. Mythmaker, just something about it, not sure what. Regarding HanDover, the only song that managed to stick in my head was Village. Haven't given Weapon a listen to yet.

Protest from Greater Wrong of the Right was the first SP song i ever heard...so it will forever hold a special place in my ranking.... but also really enjoy Mythmaker, Too Dark Park and The Process. lol this is definitely a list from a metal perspective. In our clique back in the early 90s CFM was the top tier SP record. When we wanted metal it was Ministry, Helmet, Metallica, Sepultura and NIN Broken. My top 5: CFM Rabies TDP Vivisect6 Mind For what it's worth we called it Vivisect6 because that is what was sun at the end of Testure. Can't comment on Last Rights I bought it but iirc the tracks were not coded correctly on the CD and it drove me nuts that I couldn't cue any of the tracks correctly so it mostly stayed on the shelf.

i saw the 'mind' tour in 87', it was amazing, & one of the few 'rock' shows i've actually ever seen. he came out to 'burnt' in this big white bubble then slashed out of it on the breakaway part & there were INCREDIBLE films showing, everything was black & white; but not in the paul simon song way, in the crazy skinny puppy INSANE way . . .

Still haven't forgiven Al Jorgenson for covering Smothered Hope, even with Ogre's blessing I thought it was horrible. I literally was 19 and tossing the cassette that I had it on out of my car window in a rage. I used to refer to it as "the abomination". For me, Puppy is untouchable, everyone else just wants to be them.

Weapon is my favorite actually. I like all the classics but this one was top when it came out and todayis equaly exuting listening. Maybe because Iike Electronic music in general, glitch, noise and experimental and similar stuff. To be all that and still communicating as ordinary song - I think that only genious can achieve such thing. Every single song is awsome and unique. For the other albums, I have similar opinion. It is all about personal tastes and nuances.

Weapon, Mythmaker, Process, Greater Wrong all belong in S tier for me along with Too Dark Park. I'd bump Vivi Sect down a bit. Handover deserves the D. I don't know what happened there. Other than Village I can't call up a single note of music or lyric from that boring thing. I also struggle with Last Rights. I do think it's a very creative album but it almost dares you to like it. For all the hatred Rabies has gotten over the years I think it's pretty solid. There are some weaker tracks on it but I think it's better than Vivi Sect, Cleanse or Mind.
