The German big 4 is usually considered to be Destruction, Kreator, Sodom and Tankard.

I bought Infernal Overkill when it was released. It was the most metal album i had ever heard. I had never been so looking forward to a release like i was as to Eternal Devastation. It was a real good album, but not up to the former's diabolical power. Infernal Overkill still ranks as a standout album for me, even after all these years!!

One of my favorite Metal bands and slightly behind Kreator for me as best German Thrash band. Love the whole, huge catalogue but the first 3 are the highlights. Ranking: 1. Infernal Overkill 2. Sentence Of Death 3. Eternal Devastation Love the Thrash Anthems albums as well. Every album is damn good (the ones with Schmier).

Mike is such a stunning player, I have no problem putting him on the same level as Skolnick or Friedman during the Release from Agony era when they became fully technical and proficient. And always had a soft spot for Cracked Brain, fairly sophisticated and melodic without pushing away the riffs, their Better Off Dead. The quirky singer is in a fun euro-thrash band called Poltergeist, I enjoy their early stuff.

If I remember correctly, Tommy left because he had to do his military service. Ollie was originally a jazz drummer. My order from top to bottom is how the albums were released: Sentence of Death, Infernal Overkill, ..., Live Without Sense, and All Hell Breaks Loose.

Although I prefer Sodom as a whole and the early Kreator, I still have to admit early Destruction rules. Eternal Devastation might be my favourite, followed by Infernal Overkill. Sentence of Death and Mad Butcher are also essential 80s EPs

Eternal Devastation definitely number one for me, album kills right from the beginning: Curse the Gods with the creepy intro into sick riff trading it off between the chainsaw guitar and bass. I remember buying this when it came out, 1986 was a hell of a year for thrash metal.

I'm still pretty new to Destruction, but I did listen to all of their albums a couple of years ago. I'm unable to rank them all at this time, but I know Release from Agony and Eternal Devastation are my two favorites, and Infernal Overkill is quite a solid debut. I also agree that The Least Successful Cannonball is Destruction in name only, albeit a solid groove metal album. And I did like Diabolical, though it pales in comparison to Hate Uber Alles from Kreator - also from 2022.

Sodom is phenomenal, start with Agent Orange (it's available on streaming platforms again!) and then M-16. Even if I'm not into all their albums, I love those two

Interesting ranking. A lot of their early stuff is absolutely classic and I like those couple of comeback albums "All hell Breaks Loose",and "The Antichrist". After that the production and songwriting gets pretty generic. Still an awesome live band though.

1st German LP pressing of Release from Agony was on a white vinyl. The US pressing was on a typical black one. Buying 1st German pressing in the US back then, pretty unusual.

Cracked Brain is fantastic, you both have no idea how well it was received upon its release. It's Testament-like because they wanted it to be that way. The band sounded better than ever on this one.

I know how it was received, I bought it the day it was released, it was a huge let down to me because I felt everything before it was perfect and they had a great original style and I thought they were better than Exodus and Testament so I don't know why they would try to adapt that style.

@@countralfus6408 That's just your opinion, the album was well received in Europe. Plus, they wanted it to be Testament like, what's the problem? Destruction wasn't better than Exodus and Testament. The only thrash band from Europe that was in their league was Kreator and it's only because they did some of their records in California. Exodus got much bigger balls than Destruction, Destruction more of a local phenomenon rather than a worlds thrash star.

@@AlexDizzys Destruction toured the U.S. for Eternal Devastation and Release From Agony, there was zero interest in them after that until All Hell Breaks Loose. Me and my friends at the time worshipped the first 3 albums and I didn't know a single person who gave a shit about Cracked Brain over here, maybe it did good in Europe but not here. To me their first 3 albums blow away anything Testament ever did and everything Exodus did except maybe Bonded by Blood but everyone has their own opinion and that's mine

@@countralfus6408 Exodus and Testament got bigger sound, as I said bigger balls (I doubled the comment cos it was invisible to me for a while). First two Destruction albums got attitude and aggression, Release from Agony sounded thin in comparsion and the songwriting wasn't very good. On Cracked Brain they finally sounded like a big thrash band, that was the closest they were to American, more professional thrash. Sodom sounded awful but again, the attitude and aggression did the job. Btw check out Deathrow also from Germany. Their first 3 albums. Better than Destruction and Sodom put together.

Fun fact: Headhunter's Parody of Life was written when Schmier was in Destruction and it was supposed to be the next album after Release From Agony. However, Schmier left the band and being the main songwriter, took the songs with him. I have a Metal Forces magazine from right before Schmier left Destruction and he talks about the song titles that have been written. All of them are featured on Parody of Life. Also, on that Headhunter album, they mock Destruction for covering "My Sharona".
