Talk about a serendipitous fortune! For all the pieces to come together like they did, it had to initiate with the CD tripping out in front of the right person... with the right mindset... the right abilities to record it... and the means to pass on the magic to the next person with a spark of inspiration... and so on. That's fantastic! I love it! Being a long time enthusiast if Skinny Puppy, since they formed in Vancouver in the early 89's... I can honestly say that from the beginning of that magical process to it's completion, it had a signature Skinny Puppy sound that was true to their roots. Each step in the process honed and polished it further; and you're absolutely right: each person in the chain brought something into it than is simply inimitable! That's why I love their music. They are incredible!!! They definitely inspire each other... and so many others, as well.

Handover is one of my favourite SP albums and this is one of my favourite tracks on it for all those amazing aethereal sounds and textures. Incredible that most of them came from a randomly skipping CD player! I may have to show this to my brother too-- he's not a musician himself, but it's also one of his favourite SP songs. Funny enough, our cat was reacting oddly to some of the parts of the track when you soloed them out -- makes me wonder if some of that random CD skipping ending up putting some parts of the sound into the ultrasonic range.

The creation of this song sounds to me like it almost mirrors the search for the God partical or the Higgs Bossn of sampled music. Sure there has been many before with much sampled music or sounds but this song coming together by chance is so God like. Just when I thought couldn't appreciate Skinny Puppy in a higher light I find a creation story of pure sampled sounds that in on their own forms the basis of a songs own serendipity .

@@hiwattmarshall Definitely! I still remember one of the first times I went to my buddies studio. He went to turn on his audio interface and something was very audibly wrong with it. In the 80's, I decided to make a copy of a Guns & Roses CD onto a tape so I could listen to it in my walkman. Something was clearly wrong with the tape, because after I recorded it and played the tape, it was this... wall of disjointed noise that sounded like Merzbow playing but someone was jumping the volume straight to max and straight to near minimum over and over again. It didn't sound like a CD skipping. It just sounded like this wobbly, noise blasting, mess that didn't sound ANYTHING like the source material. I had this kind of filtered effect going on. And it was BEAUTIFUL. I used that tape as a source of random sounds in so many of my tape experiments back then. I still have that tape in my collection and I really need to consider digitally preserving it.

@@hiwattmarshall Long, long ago, I was in an industrial band who's practice space was located inside of a disused office space literally in the corner of the scrapyard for a machine shop. We'd run mike cables from an E-MAX II out to the yard and had walkie-talkies to let the other guy know when to start sampling. We had so much fun there on the weekends when the shop was closed, gathering sounds. Now? My primary fun in sound revolves around taking *any* sound and working it up to be an environment, with enough random carefully thrown in to keep it ever-evolving. Taking *that* into *songs* isn't always easy, but gawddam if it isn't superfun. I use Ableton as an instrument, with a recorder off to the side to capture whatever I get up to in a brap session-- and I got the nickname for good reason, though it took me a decade to agree with it...and that was 2 decades ago. Dwayne loved hearing that people called me The BrapMan, so I have that memory to smile at forever, too. :) Such a good soul, gone so early. :( If you want an example, this is a fun one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnTLnJiPlJ2mmKM I have maybe a hundred braps on my channel, but most are Unlisted because I haven't finished pulling the best bits yet. I generally have no idea what I'm going to do when I sit down, though sometimes I have a great sound from the phone that I'm itching to play with. Recent favorites include the vape machine I used to make millions worth of vapes at a former employer. Another is a sticker-cutting machine...my car cooling on a chilly night, tick ticktick, t-tick-tick...a massive sheet of vinyl tape being removed from a brand new steel tabletop...seagulls laughing in the night...the sound of the car wash as it scrubs my car-- any one of these can become an environment. Once you get down to the lower levels of sound manipulation, almost any sound can be almost any other. And 'sample packs' start to look silly. :D The world is my sample pack. So long as I have piles of effects, I'm beyond happy with things. Cheers.

Most of my recent competitions have been based on random bits and bobs I either heard in _other_ songs or simply run through a metric tonne of effects until something unique fell out.

@@hiwattmarshall Hell yes dude. I have an old Yamaha mixer with TWO bad channels. Nothing passes through them except random bursts of static and white noise, which usually gets sent to the aux for processing fun. Great sources to trigger gates! Puppy taught me to always seek out alternate methods of using gear-- it's the best way to put your own stamp on a sound! So thankful for you guys.
