Even as a cowboys fan myself and who even wanted the rams to win the super bowl despite the rams beating my team I can see why many people wanted some type of rule placed for calls like that. More so when it was a crucial game and the ref was right in front of the players. But we’ll see how this new rule plays out this coming season.

especially with how physical the pats have been in each of their past 5 playoff runs in terms of keeping hands on receivers well 10 yards down the field. Gillmore is a great corner, but he holds and grabs (very smartly) at every cut the receivers make. Even that AFCCG versus jaxonville a couple years back, on that fourth down gillmore clearly PI'd the receiver. I think the challenges will make teams who play the Pats have a chance.
@dr.apostasy3347

@@IPIRIEY not really. Bill billechik has always wanted this rule but since he is not on the committee he can't have it. He lost several afccg on PI vs the Broncos . When they kept holding on gronk. This will benefit the pats more. He wanted the rule now he will utilize it.
@IPIRIEY
@IPIRIEY 5 жыл бұрын
@@dr.apostasy3347 There was only one non-call that the Pats had in that Broncos AFCCG with Gronk in the end zone on the final 2 pt conversion attempt. The pats were benefactors of the reffing of that game through and through. Von Miller was practically being tackled by offensive linemen with no calls. Owen Daniels was held for 20 yards down field 2 times in the 2nd half as well. The patriots have long been the benefactors of PI calls in the playoffs.

"You have to start somewhere"... EXACTLY Skip. This isn't the NFL trying to calm Sean Payton's temper tantrum. This is a legitimate step toward improving the game.. and the old guard *cough Shannon* needs to give up the ghost and understand that the game is changing. A trial run of a sky judge is not a bad idea.. Look at soccer, VAR was a very different concept and was met with adversity at first, but they've used it effectively at all levels. Bottom line, give it shot if it's worth the shot... and if it doesn't work drop it.

They got it wrong. The rule should be within the final 5 minutes of both halves, a team should be able to challenge a call on the field using one of their timeouts. There isn’t a contested ball in the game that a receiver or a db doesn’t get up after the play claiming that the other person interfered with them making a play on the ball. This is going to cripple to the flow of the sport.

The world is not yet advanced enough to remove human error from the NFL officiating process. A move like this only pushes the game in a direction that it should not be heading. If you can't get all of the calls right, then why put every 50/50 ball under a microscope? The game is unbalanced now, with the receivers having the deck stacked in their favor. Coaches can essentially save their PI call until they need it, send their burner on a 9, and challenge a millisecond rule violation for a spot foul. Not a fan of this rule change at all.
@badxhero2097
@badxhero2097 5 жыл бұрын
The problem with this statement is that this rule wasn't put into place to catch 50/50 calls. It was put into place to catch the egregious ones that the refs somehow MISS similar to the one in the Saints game. Stop acting all doom and gloom just because the NFL wants to marginally reduce to level of human error. Jeez.

@@B_Libs So you're afraid of improvement because of the possibility of abuse? So, I guess with the legalization of sports betting, owners should be able to bribe referees huh? I mean, allowing betting will obviously encourage that sort of behavior.
@B_Libs
@B_Libs 5 жыл бұрын
BadxHero It’s not a possibility, it’s a guarantee that it’s going to be abused. The rule is too vague from what I’ve heard about it so far. Will it require one of the teams challenges? How many times a game can you challenge PI? Is it automatically reviewed inside of 2 minutes? Is it automatically reviewed if there is a timeout? How does the rule work? What happened in the NFC championship was ridiculous, but to put a game changing rule into effect, and for it to be loosely structured will hurt the sport, not help it.
@badxhero2097
@badxhero2097 5 жыл бұрын
@@B_Libs The rule, as stated, indicates that the NFL is merely allowing pass interference calls to be reviewed. As for how often and through what method, that has yet to be determined. However, I highly doubt that this will get abused at all, and people such as yourself are merely crying foul. You have to trust that the NFL knows what it's doing, since bitching about it without even giving the new ruling a chance won't help anything.

As a saints fan it hurts me that this rule was not already somewhat in place, as it cost us a super bowl berth. Especially when the home team didn't get that call. However, the owners messed this rule up. These PIs should only be reviewable within that last 2 minutes of each half. The games are already too long due to TV timeouts and other things, but every potential PI being challenged will make it that much longer.

Odell Beckham's most famous catch against Dallas would have been reviewable then because he committed pass interference against the defender by throwing him down. That's the only reason he only had one hand available to make that catch in the first place. He's notorious for offensive pass interference, so if this is really going to be implemented I hope coaches will challenge it for offensive as well as defensive.
@gen81465

Coaches already have the option to challenge 2 plays during a game. I don't think the change will make a difference in the timing of the game, but it will allow an egregious error to be fixed. I feel a team should be able to challenge ANY 2 plays during a game (with no way to get the 3rd challenge, even if you win the first 2). If the team wants to challenge the opening kickoff and the first play from scrimmage, so be it. They won't have any challenges left for the rest of the game. The point is that, with the rules change, each team still has only 2 challenges per game. Yes, the NFL Rules Committee got it right.

I wouldn't have done that. Like Shannon said it will open Pandora's box and make room for far more potential controversial calls. I would have simply put another official in a booth up high with access to the field and all instant replays, slow - motion etc. It would give the officiating crew a different view point. A "Sky Judge" that would have to authority to change bad calls or non calls.

The Saints had a chance to win in overtime. Period. There's holding on every play. I say Refs don't call PI and let them use their challenges in the first half.🤔😁

They are making the game too easy for offenses. Goodell opened up Pandora's box in 2007 when they made it illegal to touch recievers beyond 5 yards. That made it too easy to pass. Now guys are putting up numbers they have no business having. Too much offense. The game is becoming tainted. So now the Hall of Fame will be.

I hope these two guys become immortal so they can do this show forever. I love their dynamic and their excitement on the topics. Love this show. I think the rule change is dumb. Just pass a rule that a ref watching the replays can make game-time instant rulings so they don't have to go the ipads or whatever to review stuff and slow the game down even more.

As a saints fan I am happy they did something about this. I mean watching that was heart breaking. And I do not know the best way to come about this. However, knowing the NFL I am nervous that they won't implement this rule well and coaches will be able to exploit it. I think the best way they could implement the rule is if it went something like this. "A coach may challenge a PI or a non called PI if the coach can specifically state with whom the interference was occurring. And should the coach be wrong there is a 10 yard penalty." Or something like this. That way you un-incentivize the coaches from using a "blanket" challenge, and you add some actual penalty for falsely throwing a challenge or a correct call.

1. The CFL has allowed coaches to challenge PI for several reasons. 2. PI should be tiered. Egregious PI spot foul, accidental/illegal contact at most 15 yards.
