2023 Audi Q4 Etron review by The Straight Pipes. The Audi Q4 Etron is putting down 295 horsepower and 339 lb-ft of torque from 2 electric motors and a 77kwh battery. At $76,440 CAD, would you take it over the VW ID4?

i like that Audi is designing their EVs to look and feel like a normal car rather than going hyper minimalistic or hyper complex, and like other manufacturers are doing, i think making EV versions of normal ICE cars is the best way to go aesthetic wise, as one of the major turnoffs for me when it comes to EVs are how basic a lot of them look.

IDK if you guys would know this yourselves, but electric power is negatively impacted by low temperatures, and I know a lot of canada has permafrost underground, which is where the cables are that run from power stations to chargers, so is the distance from power stations to chargers possibly part of the problem with how glitchy your chargers are? On the subject of the US reviewers mentioning charging, I live about 40 minutes from The Capital Building in Washington DC and electric charging is at most major grocery stores (depends on size of store, but most have 2-6 charging spaces), so IDK if you guys in Canada have chargers at grocery stores or not, but maybe try to think about charging anytime one is available in a parking lot instead of only charging once you're low and having to specifically look for a super fast charger every time. I think the idea has been that charging isn't like gas stations since it can be done almost anywhere at some rate, so try to remember to get into a habit of plugging your car in each time you leave it.

The reason that American car reviewers don’t whine about Canada’s crappy charging infrastructure is that Canada’s crappy charging infrastructure is way, way, way worse than America’s charging infrastructure. Canada and USA are 2 different countries, and our charging infrastructure is way better.

Have had the Q4 e-tron for over a year now and I am super happy with it. Got the s-line edition with sports setup, which I believe makes for an excellent driving experience (given that it is a SUV). You said that there was nothing special about the headlights - I think that they are exceptional! The matrix LED headlights does a superb job at night - newer experienced anything even close to that. Hope you will soon get better charging infrastructure in North America. In northern Europe it has become quite good over the last couple of years and now is not a concern at all.

After 13 months and over 20k km (plus 60+ videos) I’m still loving my Q4. I’ve got a 40 S-Line (rwd) so it’s not quick but for a family car it’s fast enough and no slower than my old 520d. I picked this over the ID4 and Skoda Enyaq partly due to looks, HVAC controls and the infotainment system. Audi’s MMI and Virtual Cockpit work really well and are tried and tested. Anyone coming from another Audi won’t have a steep learning curve to get used to the Q4. I think this is a great move by Audi. There’s nothing here to scare off ICE drivers (local charging infrastructure aside) in the showroom. It’s not a crazy electric car with an Audi badge, it just an Audi that happens to be electric👍🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

On top, here in Denmark most of our locally produced electricity is produced on two huge coal powered plants, one basically in Copenhagen City center and the other at the outskirts of our second biggest city, Aarhus. BC is pretty good, too. I rarely have had an issue in almost 4 years. Although Petro-Canada is avoided at all costs. They don't care. Meanwhile, a call to BC Hydro will get a charger reset/rebooted and they can initiate a charge remotely. I'm sure gas pumps were a bit confusing in the early 1900s, too. Maybe people should just roll with it and be less entitled to everything all at once.

I DONT understand all the hate with the ID4. I drove with my friend from Florida to Myrtle Beach(500 miles) in one and it was amazing. The infotainment didnt have any issues and since he was an actual OWNER, not someone testing it for a few days, he had gotten used to where everything was in the infotainment and there were few if any slowdowns. I believe they've also updated it since then with more speed. Also suspension wise, it was great. Stiff on twist curves and soft but firm over bumps. Its very solid riding. Was super quiet and in particular it had amazing headlights that were great for night driving. We had to stop and charge it 2 times on that trip and each stop was about 30 minutes or so but it was pretty much just plug and play. He plans to hold onto it even after the warranty expires, and if I was in the market for an EV i would definitely look over the ID4. I think you guys are being more than a little unfair to that car. I've seen a ton of them all over my city and the owners seem to be happy. Doug Demuro seems to agree on that as well.

I have a 2019 Audi E-Tron that I love. I got it used and it was a good deal. The range is terrible, yes, but you need to drop the "full tank" mentality. You can charge at almost any destination. So you're never at the bottom, never completely full. It helps that I live in Vancouver which has a lot of chargers which I realize isn't a reality for everyone but it works for me. The car is super luxurious, drives like a dream, has tons of room and looks great. It is super heavy so it doesn't feel as nimble as other German cars but it is still very comfortable.

A lot of reviewers compare the Q4 to the original. I have an e-tron 55 2022 (just before they announced the q8 facelift) and the driving difference between the Q4 and the original e-tron is massive. The air suspension alone is night and day. The interior quality is also completely different. There's so much hard plastic in the q4 vs the original e-tron. Heck people don't talk about how capable the original e-tron is off-road. Like - I can take it everywhere my Land Rover Discovery could go.

Guys, if the battery is cold af and has a high SoC, you don't get max charging speeds. One additional note though, VW/Audi isn't shipping battery preconditioning yet, so even you navigate to a charger, the battery isn't heating up properly like the systems in a BMW, Mercedes or Tesla are already working.
@TheStraightPipes
@TheStraightPipes Жыл бұрын
It’s not cold af. We’ve had the exact same situation with an Ioniq5 at this charger and we even spoke with some senior execs at electrify Canada that told us some of the chargers could be partially broken without any public indication. Hence, the 150kw charger directly beside the 350kw charging at a faster rate

@@TheStraightPipesPlease keep hounding the execs at Electrify America/Canada on behalf of all us EV drivers. Their infrastructure is absolute shit. I use to defend them but they have completely fallen apart here in the states this past year. EV drivers tend to be defensive over anything negative regarding EVs bc they believe in the better, greener future but we need to call out these companies if we want them to get better. Infrastructure is the only thing holding mass adoption back. It needs to be reliable and easy enough for my grandma to use, that’s the true test. Bc at the end of the day, EVs shouldn’t just be for EV enthusiasts who can put up with EA.

@@TheStraightPipes sorry my language was propably a bit harsh. ;) The charging situation in Canada is looking pretty dire, nevertheless at 40-50% SoC you'd probably see 80-100kW under perfect conditions and not the advertised 135kW peak. The Ioniq5 is even more impaired by a coldish battery - as far as I know, Hyundai is finally is rolling out an update for preconditioning. Some charging station providers in Europe are displaying, what the car is asking for and what the charging station is able to deliver. I think this should become a standard in the industry, so customers know, if there's something wrong with the station or the car.

I really wish our respective governments (US and Canada) would have worked with the auto and power industries to set up working, national charging networks BEFORE they required manufacturers to start making EVs. But that would have been logical, and governments don't work that way...

I really wanted the Q4 but Audi ditched their reservation system so dealers here in the PNW are marking them up $5-$10k. The equivalent Q4 to the ID4 I wanted would've been $17k more after the cheapest markup I could find. And that's before taxes. I just couldn't justify that.

Since when are car brands responsible for fuelling your car? I never heard of Toyota gas stations. As soon as there is money on the road (EVs that need charging) the industry will follow. Here in Germany public CCS chargers 150kW and more are far FAR more abundant than Tesla chargers.

I own a Q4, and in NY, DC fast is pretty much non existent unless you're a Tesla owner. I love the car, and can charge at home - but we still need an ICE for trips. EVs will not succeed until the network improves. Period. EV range degrades 15-20% at temperatures below 20F, which I think is pretty good compared to my previous EV - which was around 30% at less than 30F. We have to remember that even ICE vehicles see a decrease in fuel economy in the cold temps, but if you can't charge Level 2 at home, this type of EV will probably make you mad.

Re: Boost - it's just Physics. As the battery SoC decreases, the battery pack voltage drops. The same current (Go pedal) with a lower voltage = less power. So...state of charge drops -> Volts drop -> Amps drop. All that means less power (Watts). Watts = Amps * Volts

You probably didn’t get a good charging session because the battery was too cold. Unfortunately you didn’t talk about charging pre-conditioning but it seems it does not have it. You should have drove it a bit harder to warm up the battery then plug in the charger. This should yield better charging sessions.

VWG and Hyundai/Kia and maybe others have these regen adjust paddles. I haven't used it but my inclination is that I'd hate this. It's too fiddly. Much prefer regen to be handled via a dedicated setting or just tied to the drive mode, and I'd prefer a standalone 1pd toggle. Set and forget.

@@hkad6252 True, but regen is important for efficiency, and I was under the impression that you had to use the paddles to get the car to regen, as VWs (I think) don't offer a 1PD setting. Maybe I don't have that right; if I'm wrong please educate me.

@@MLHunt All VWs also have B „gear“, which switches between max regen and sailing. So not a menu setting but with the gear lever instead. Also every EV in the world except Tesla has brake blending, which just applies regen when you press the brakes. When pressed harder and max regen is reached the friction brakes are added. I have no idea why Tesla does not do that. Saving costs? So no, you dont need the steering wheel paddles to regen, just use the regular brake pedal.

They also need to improve the infrastructure in apartment garages via incentives to retrofit older buildings and by making chargers in every parking spot mandatory in new builds (including houses). If the gov't is going to ban sales of ICE cars in the future, where the heck are the millions of people who live in apartments going to charge their car? We're going to be fighting each other at the stations (the ones that work, anyways). They need to get ahead of this pronto.

Frunks are overrated, cars like this and the ID.4 have a much shorter hood than cars like the Mach E, meaning they can fit more interior space in the same footprint compared to an EV with a frunk
@davetravels9273
@davetravels9273 Жыл бұрын
It’s actually the opposite. You usually get a frunk with and ICE platform because there is no engine. Tesla did it as a gimmick and for looks reasons, longer hoods look sportier. This is an EV only platform, which uses space extremely efficiently. It has a short hood because it doesn’t need it, and instead allocates it to interior space. It would be nice to have a little cubby to store your L2 cable under the hood though.

I've been driving a short-range EV (i3s) across Ontario from London since 2019 and have not been stranded at a DCFC yet, just need to pre-plan ones trip and always choose locations that are reliable based on Plugshare and locations that have another nearby DCFC in case your first choice is dead/blocked/in-use. EV's are not for the masses yet.
