Dad: Wow isn’t Rick something? Rick: Wow thanks dad!! Skip: Well is he really that guy? Seriously, In the last 2 minutes of doing his chores, he left a dirty spot on 2 plates. In all my years of covering chores, I’ve never seen anything like it.Chosen one turns into the frozen one.

I hope so but I doubt it. From Skip’s logic, “What are we going to talk about?” Rick hates to listen about sports stories, and Skip hates to listen to cooking stories. And both likely hate reminiscing about their past upbringing. SO…what are they going to talk about that they can’t already google about each other? It’s really sad, but that’s what likely motivates both to stay apart.

@@louiearmstrong... Very true. I'm sure they both have families they can talk about. Catch up on what their nephews, nieces, cousins, grandkids are doing. It doesn't even have to be about themselves, just "How's everyone doing?" I'm sure they both might have a relative or two that would LOVE to get "tips" from their uncles. It doesn't even have to be about themselves. Time also tends to mellow people out and start to realize the commonality within each other. There's more to life than just sports and cooking. It sounds like Skip needs to branch outside of sports. Rick seems more laid back and mellower of the two. I hope they set aside their differences for a bit and realize those differences are what makes them who they are and just accept it.

I've seen that guy on the food network. Didn't know they were brothers though. Lot of respect for you doing this. It takes guts to lay your soul bare. I had a strange relationship with my brother also. He was 10 years older and died last year of lung cancer. We had a totally different view on everything and weren't close. Loved him, but often didn't really like him. I did all the stuff that needed to be done to settle his affairs but have no real fond memories. My Dad died the year before and we were very close. I think of he and my Mom often.

I wish more older siblings (including myself) realized this while they're young. If you are nice to your younger siblings you will have them as loyal devoted friends for the rest of your life. The regret my father has not being able to reconcile with his father about being abandoned, tears at him even 30 years later. Skip loved sports, but “Ricky” loved cooking and the family business. Which is likely why his parents attached to Rick more than Skip, who would rather obsess about sports. *This illustrates how failure to communicate is more damaging to relationships than harsh words.*

Really sad that they never connected during childhood like that. I get the different interests part making it hard, but I would hope both are happy at where they are in life and could connect with one another now as maturer adults. I went through a similar situation. I grew up in a very volatile household. My father was schizophrenic and he was a madman. I avoided coming home out of fear and joined the military as soon as I was 17. I escaped that environment but left my brothers and sisters behind. I didn't realize that they felt abandoned by me. It was flight or flight. My father was beating me up. I didn't see him hurt my younger siblings. So I didn't feel that I was doing something bad at the time. To this day we are not on speaking terms due to my decision. After listening to Skip describe his situation I can see their side. It's really tragic all the way around. I am happy to see that both Skip and Rick are thriving. But it is sad that they are not on speaking terms.

Skip, I totally understand where you coming from. It is possible to grow up with siblings and not be close in relationship. It's the same way with me. Just because you are not close with your siblings, doesn't mean you hate them or had a fall out. Life just has it that way and to us, it's normal and just the way it is. Of course if we see our siblings, we will hug, speak, and say, "I love you." But at the end of the day, the closeness is just not there. I see some people won't understand and that's okay.

What an incredible story. I didn't know your brother was Rick. He is indeed a famous master chef. You both have things in common, like how both of came into national prominence or share your experiences on the road to success. Also, the people you've met along the way and the people who have impacted your the most in life. How being renown has changed your life. You know life is very short and before you know it, you could miss out on opportunities to get to know your brother. Do you want the same thing that happened to your sister, happen to your little brother? Invite him over for thanksgiving (but have it catered). You would be amazed at the conversations you could have with him over a fine bottle of wine. Having so many regrets is not the way you want to end your life.

That’s a great idea. But to be honest, I think it’s possible we’d get a different story and history from Rick. What made me think that is when Skip said he also didn’t have a relationship with his sister, but that his sister and Rick were close. (And it sounds like Rick was closer with the mom, too.) Plus, Skip keeps saying that his brother and sister probably never forgave him for in essence abandoning them with the mess of the home life. But if all Skip had done was go to college upon graduation (just 2 years ahead of Rick), that doesn’t seem like abandonment that an adult Rick would still be resentful over. So there seems to be something more. Maybe Skip really did basically move out during high school (staying at his friends’ and girlfriend’s homes, like he said), and Rick and his sister felt Skip just bailed for all of high school and thereafter, and never looked back for them once in college. Just a hunch, but I think if Rick were telling this story, there would be a different explanation for their estrangement than just not having anything in common. But who knows? Anyway, I enjoy both of their “products,” if you will. Hopefully they will find whatever forgiveness and reconciliation is needed, before it’s too late in this world.

I have a similar story. My dad was a hopeless alcoholic when I was growing up in the '60s, he was a WWII veteran, an infantry sergeant, who had watched helplessly as his company was slaughtered by the Germans. He was captured and spent three years in German POW camps. He suffered severe PTSD for the rest of his life. He and my mother had 4 children together, growing up in a deeply dysfunctional family. It wasn't just my father, it was my mother too. And yet all four of us went to become successful professionals. Neither of my parents went to college, but we kids all got college degrees. My older sis, the oldest of us four, had a career in the National Park Service and held several positions in which she was the first woman to achieve them. My younger sis became a broadcast journalist when the profession was still dominated by men. Unfortunately she was killed on the job when she was just 24 in 1982. I have a younger brother as well. We have not achieved the fame of the Bayless Brothers, but who cares, we all made something out of our lives coming from a very less than ideal family situation.

@@AJ11OH-IO the fact that you are even leaning on "woke" which isn't even a clearly defined group of people is ridiculous and only shows your need to crowbar it in everywhere.... not to mention that skip is not considered "woke" he is considered the opposite... so his selfishness reflects on the "antiwoke" if anyone.

Skip...this was REAL! I even like the fact that you accepted responsibility for leaving. I too know that pain and have definitely made things clear and have apologized. I would say that you should do what you can to build a bridge to your brother. It's just you two left. Make that right my man. Make that right as you can...while you can. 👊🏿💪🏿🖤🙏🏿

Thanks for putting this very personal story out there, Skip. I appreciate you telling your story, and I hope you two find each other one day. TBH, I was never a fan of your takes, but, I've always respected your accomplishments and passion. I've watched both of you while growing up in the 90's, and didn't even know you were brothers until many years later. You're two different sides of the same coin and its actually kind of beautiful. 💜

I've watched Rick Bayless ever since he was on tv doing Mexico One Plate at a Time on PBS. I enjoy his style, his views and especially his love of Mexican cuisine and culture. His passion, skill and love of food resonates with me. Eating at Frontera Grill and Topolobampo is on my bucket list. Meeting Rick is also a goal of mine as well. I knew he had a father that was a pit master, but not the extent you have shared. Suffice it say I respect and admire Rick Bayless, more so now from your story and life. I've listened and watched you over the years. I've listened to you to get a different view on sports. I have not particularly liked what you have said at times to any meaningful degree other than just being another sensational sports tv personality. I did not put 2+2 together until now. I did not give it a second thought that Bayless was not the only thing you and Ricky shared. I see now the resemblance between the both of you. Not only physically but also your drives and passions. I suppose coping with alcoholism and a dysfunctional family each person deals with it in their own way. Out of all it you have shown the incredible drive, passion, and talent the Bayless brothers have. Both of you have excelled in your own professions and careers to a degree of being well known nationally ( and globally). While I still see you as sensational and don't agree, sometimes, with your sporting views. Like your brother I respect your talent, passion and drive to be the best in your field. Thank you for this insight into your life and the (lack of a) relationship you have with Rick. I have a deeper understanding of the Bayless family and where possibly that passion comes from.

If you can get a good read on people, you can tell he was trying to feel something he felt he should but couldn’t. His tell is how often he made reference to his own accomplishments and what that sounded like. By far the most authentic part of the whole thing. You can just feel the rage that exists in that man. And that’s just sad.

Its things like this that explain Skip and his takes and talking points. This kind of open dialog is what people to everyone should be having. You can understand why he is the way he is when you hear about his family life. Imagine never connecting with a brother or sister even when you are in a dysfunctional situation. Imagine the internal battle his brother may have been going thru as well. While he was busy making a name for himself in sports writing his brother was doing his own thing getting his own accomplishments. I bet if you talked to him he pushed himself just to get acceptance from Skip and be his own man. This is deep.
