This kid could have stayed in his parents basement for $0 with no aspirations and be content living a mediocre life but he chose to venture out to experience new things, learn about different cultures and will most likely live a grand life than most of us can ever imagine. I'd say that's pretty priceless ;)!

$45 a month for 5 month is $225. You have a home base a place to keep your luggage and a person could explore Thailand and the surrounding countries without breaking the bank. I think it's commendable that a guy is so frugal at his age.

you gotta be real about what you're using your apartment for.... if you're on the go all the time and pretty much just sleep and shower there, then who cares as long as you're comfortable? I know people who spend a ton on nice places for years and have never used the pool or gym or any of the amenities they're paying for. A lot of times they choose an apartment for status
@ThriftySteve7 жыл бұрын
I've had people tell me as they're looking for apartments that part of the reason they were attracted to an expensive place was ego. That doesn't mean everyone, but certainly SOME people choose to pay more for status, at least in part.

Great place if you're on a budget. Basic and small with three flights of stairs to navigate. Personally I couldn't handle a squat dunny but I can see the attraction of the location. Could well be near where I've stayed in the past. I was paying 6K a month for a top floor big room with air con (I never used) and I was happy with that deal. Cheapest I've had was an unrenovated room through an ex pat for 2.5K per month. Excellent video!

@ronnieo95716 жыл бұрын
@Paul Cycle My wifes sister lives in a place for 1,500 baht. That is 45 dollars USD. Has a bathroom. Thais who live in places that cheap typically will cook outside on patio (if on ground floor) using a canned gas burner and a wok. No cooking inside. No aircon. They are perfectly happy living that way, visit us once in awhile, and feel no sense of being deprived of anything. Also, Thai eat out alot or get takeaway which comes in plastic bags of soup-noodles or rice with fresh /fruitveggies in separate bags. Even high end condo's typically will only have electric stove top burners with no oven, and no hot sink water. It simply becomes natural to wash dishes in cold water. If you need hot water you use the kettle. For a price of about 5,500 Thb which is 166 USD you would have a new building single room new inside with aircon. For 10-12K approx you are in a new studio in top line building toward end of the train line in any direction, with a pool, fitness center etc. One bedroom, as good as the west , in some respects far better., although small. A pool or no pool will drive price. No pool, older building, single room, you could still swing something cheap with an air conditioner. Or you could buy a floor model aircon. After all its just a single room. But yeah the answer to the question is yes, but this is all about how you can live. I have seen guys on youtube saying they can subsist on a diet of street meat on a stick, noodles, or 7-11 food everyday, and no aircon. I like having a western style kitchen with hob for vent (although no stove) , and we cook most meals at home.... my electric bill for 2br unit running air in one of the rooms at least half the day. (on and off) is about 70 USD.
@MOTIVATIONBYDAR7 жыл бұрын
That was a great choice for a very young single guy. The only thing i would say is that if i planned to stay there for 5 months i would spend a little bit of cash and get some paint and a paint brush and at least paint the room and tidy it up a bit to make it look better and as a thank you for the person lowering the rent.

How does this guy get a Thai Visa, doesn't sound like he has a job or a source of income? How does he meet the Thai visa minimum monthly income or minimum bank account requirements?
@ThriftySteve6 жыл бұрын
Good question, because with a multi-entry visa you're required to show a certain amount in the bank... Right now he's got income but I'm not sure if he did at the time of this video. There are a few possibilities: 1. He has enough money in the bank and he's just being frugal to make his savings last 2. He doesn't have a multi-entry tourist visa... I don't think you have to show income when you apply for a single entry visa in a neighboring country Did you want me to ask him?

Thanks for the reply. I guess part of the answer is in the first paragraph under the video: UPDATE: Karl moved out and went to Bangkok to help develop a fashion brand... here's the story... kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqireHWIm8p6oqM ... so I am guessing he has a source of income and enough money in the bank to cover the Thai visa minimum requirements? I was looking at the retirement visa which has those $$/Baht minimums I spoke of. I believe its something like $24,570 US or 800,000 Baht in the bank for a minimum 90 day period before you apply for the retirement visa or have a income of 60,000 baht per month or a combination equivalent. Which is a lot of money for someone who is on social security, a fixed income or the like. I can afford to live in Thailand, given the prices you and others are quoting. But, it appears I don't meet the minimum money requirements to qualify for a retirement visa? Kind of disappointing quite honestly. Maybe I should be looking at a different type visa? Is there somewhere in the states like a online link or embassy link I could look to get answers or confirmation to some of these questions/statements? Yea, if you could ask him what kind of visa he had/has and what the money requirements were would help me and others, who can afford living there, but don't meet the visa minimum $$$Baht requirements. Being able to afford living in Thailand and meeting the minimum $$$ visa requirements are two different realities it appears. Kind of why begin the journey if you can't meet those visa minimum $$$ requirements? Thanks, JB.

Did some more research on KZbin and found the following posts to more or less confirm what I said above about the minimum $$$/Baht requirements to obtain a retirement visa. So unfortunately, it doesn't look like Thailand living is in the cards for me? Are their other similar countries that don't have these restrictive minimum $$$ visa requirements? poka513...3 years ago I live near San Francisco and just mailed my O-A Retirement Visa Application to Los Angeles. I sent an original and 3 copies of: visa application, personal data form, medical certificate, broker statement main page showing balance, passport photo page - in addition to my passport itself, 4 passport photos, $200 cashiers check, 9x12 inch self addressed envelope with two $1 stamps (Post Office said it would cost $1.19 to mail back my passport, so I rounded up to $2). I did not include a letter of guarantee from the broker or get anything notarized. After a few days, I got an Email requesting a police clearance, so I went to my city police station and got a local police clearance letter ($10 fee) and mailed it and 3 copies to Los Angeles. I had read that some embassies do their own criminal background check, but not Los Angeles apparently. A few weeks ago, a couple back east went in person to the New York Thai Embassy and were told all they needed were completed visa applications and a bank statement (no medical certificate or criminal background check required). They returned a few days later and were issued their O-A Retirement Visas. I have heard one way to qualify when it comes time to renew the Retirement Visa in Thailand is to get a letter from your embassy stating your income based on your yearly tax forms which show your income (assuming 65,000 Baht minimum per month), thus avoiding keeping 800,000 Baht in a Thai bank: www.thaiconsulatela.org/service_visa_detail.aspx?link_id=34 ========================================================================== Scott Mallon...3 years ago Welcome to the world of Thai immigration, where the word standard is as unknown as the other side of the black hole. If you get the certificate of income you can show the 65,000+ and get the visa this way, yes.

santitam is an awesome location. I stayed at nimman and really, i like santitam better and mama khao soi is there!its more authentic food and people. not so pretty of course. and its clsoe to kad suan kao which is the better mall. what can you buy at overpriced maya? nothing! just go to maya for street food night and the movies, and the basement food court.

Sometimes I spend more on 1 day of eating out then this guy spends for 1 month rent lol. How can you complain about that? But if you have my budget you would at least op for AC/Kitchen and western style bathroom. Great find :)

The cheapest place I found that includes AC, fridge and western bathroom costs about twice this.... still very cheap!
