My Swedish grandmother told me the story she was told about the origin of the Julbok - that the people of a small rural village in medieval times were starving and prayed for help, and that a goat appeared walking into the village and saved the villagers from starvation. I could definitely see the connection between that story and Thor - kind of a Christianized version of the tale. (She came from the north of Sweden, in Västerbotten.)

This tradition can be found as far as Southern Romanian. During new year's eve young people go from house to house one is dressed as a goat and dances while the others sing. This custom is still practiced in small villages throughout Romania.

I remember building snow lanterns ("snølykt") in my childhood in western Norway. We did not have yule goats made of straw, but children would go yule-goating ("gå julebukk") between Yule and New Years. It was a very benign tradition at that time, where children would dress up and try to make themselve unrecognizable, then visit neighbors who would give them cookies or fruit. Not too different from Halloween these days. Sadly the American tradition seems to be taking over and going Yule goat is soon extinct.

Yes, we always made snow lanterns too, here in the south of Norway. Soooo pretty with them made by snowballs, so they gave such a beautiful light. It’s also great to make ice lights too, by filling a bucket with water when it’s real cold and ficing a water/soda bottle to it’s inside until it’s frozen, then tilt it out of the bucket, remove the water bottle and add a light to the large ice cup. You can also add food coloring or pieces of colored napkins to the water for colored lights...

Any town can have a straw goat but only Gävle has one that is burned down and that's why the tradition must go on. That's why they stoped fire proof it.
As a Slav I would like to point one thing - our tradition should be pronounced as "Kolęda" ("ę" is not "i"). But without this small detail - it's another great video I am glad thank you have returned :)

We also «went Julebukk» every romjul (between Christmas and New Years) every year. All us kids dressed up in costumes (in my time not any longer looking like bocks/goats) and went from door to door where we got candy, cookies and fruit, often in return for singing carols. Sad kids don’t go julebukk anymore and instead go trick and treating on Halloween,so ething that is NOT our custom.

I first heard of Krampus about four or five years ago when he hit the pop culture scene here in the U.S. My daughter told me all the kids at school were talking about the movie that was made about Krampus. The children you talked about, in the their homes on Krampusnacht, must have been utterly terrified of him. I read on the internet that Krampus is 'supposedly' the son of the Norse goddess Hel, although in my own research I don't recall ever seeing anything written that connects the two. I like the Yule Goat. I'd heard of it, but didn't really know anything past its existence. The burning of the goat in Sweden seems like it may be an anti-pagan thing. I find it sad and tragic that there are those who have no respect for other people's/culture's beliefs. Such is the way of humans I suppose. Anyway, thanks for educating me further on yet a couple more subjects. I always look forward to your videos because you share so many fascinating things from history. :) As always, many blessings to you. Going to check out that "jolablot.com" now.

Burning something in Sweden is not a sign of disrespect, for example the respectable way of disposing a damaged swedish flag is by burning it
@Greye135 жыл бұрын
@@4nd3rzzon I had not thought of it in that way. Burning is the proper and respectful way to dispose of a damaged U.S. flag as well. This is something to think about. Thank you. It would be wonderful if the Yule Goat survives this year. Its creation seems a beautiful tradition to me. Blessings to you for a wonderful season.

Krampus has NOTHING to do with the Yule goat. Just because they both have horns doesn't make it identical.
@petersonl10084 жыл бұрын
Why is krampus depicted with chains? Is it a servant of something else?
@Peregrina4 жыл бұрын
I don't know about Krampus being a servant but as far as I know Krampus catch badly behaved kids and take them with him in a sack. But I know that in some places in Sweden the Yule goat took a more sinister form as santa became more popular. Instead of the yule goat coming with presents he was coming for naughty children while santa hold him on a leashe. I don't know how wide spread this was though.
@musicgirl123572 жыл бұрын

Ah, if only we could have snow where I live! I would make snow lanterns all across my yard. But, alas, I live in a semi-tropical area and we only have snow maybe every 7 years and it's just a dusting of it. We did have a monumental FOUR INCHES one year back in the 1970s!! It was magical and it proved that no one here knows how to drive in icy, snowy weather. As for the yule goat, I have mixed feelings. Viewing it as a sign of fertility in the coming year is one thing, but it does have its frightening goat-demon aspects and is not a tradition I see being started and maintained here in America. Thank you, my friend, for again teaching us about the traditions and lives of people in the past and so far away. God Jul to you and those you hold dear.
