Lots of people today seem to want to identify with the Vikings but they only seem interested in the heroic stuff. As you rightfully point out, these people were farmers trying to make a life in a tough environment. The one's that did decide to raid, sailed across the dangerous north sea in unpredictable weather enduring enormous hardship. Probably not in the best of moods when they encountered the locals. It's ironic that the brutal raiders is the only reason we remember these norse people at all.
@knockoutnorko7500 Жыл бұрын
Far from being the *only* reason we know about them fer sure but I do get the point yer trying tae make. It's good not to overglorify people while still being enthusiastic about their lives and thus our own history.

My grandfather left school aged eleven and went straight to work on boats and farming, his family weren't wealthy but he only ever told us that kids these days(this was 70s/80s) wouldn't know a hard life if it bit them on the backend! I know there are children that still suffer but generally I think my grandfather was right.

Its always interesting to find out about the more ordinary side of the lives of scandinavian people in this particular era. I went to a museum to see a viking exhibit i can't for the life of me remember where it was but the exhibit showed a wooden toy warrior a toy viking longboat and a wooden doll with horsehair on the head of it. That is fucking stunning to me I was a child in the nineties looking at a Danelaw era childs Action Man and a Barbie doll.

When you mention the average age figure to 40-45 years, was that number calculated including infant mortality? Because if you set aside those numbers, average age rises substantially so that you find people living 50-70 years, even a long time ago.
@erictoulon5946 Жыл бұрын
I think it was based upon infant mortality. A lot of my Norwegian ancestors lived into their 80’s as did many others but when I visited their graves about a third of of the graves were for children five years of age or younger. Plus you had warfare and women dying in childbirth.
@inputimmersion9577 Жыл бұрын
Yes, take out war, childbirth mortality for women and infant mortality before the age of 5 and average life expectancy was basically what it is today.

Thank you for taking a rational stand on the vaccine issue. As a history buff (and aspiring history student), I enjoy channels like these. But as someone with Autism (Asperger's with AD/HD, etc.), whose very existence is hatefully used as a justification for anti-vax propaganda, I take the entire anti-vax movement as a personal insult, on top of its obvious insanity towards millions of children. The hatefulness behind it is clearly evident in the anti-vax comments & thread shown here, and while I'm sorry that your channel has had to be exposed to it, I nonetheless thank you for standing up to it.

Thank you for standing up and presenting a rational view against the anti-vax nonsense. I also have Asperger's and I would like to see these anti-vaxxers explain how, since I was born in 1946, I developed Autism as a result of the vaccines they are so against. I was also one of the schoolchildren who tested the Salk polio vaccine in 1954.

Haha that reference about Vikings really made me giggle. As much as I like that show,I know its no documentary. While it may be far more accurate than a lot older movies about ancient and medevil times,at the end of the day,the story is in a lot of aspects a more fantasy version of the society they had back then. Every time I see someone that takes the show as actual historical fact,I raise an eyebrow and makes me wonder how naive can they be?Yes vikings treated women better than other cultures at the time.But nicer does not mean equal.

Isn't it so that they waited a long time before naming a child because of the death toll the first year. No name = less memories and grief? I have also heard they aimed for children to be born in spring to increase their chances of survival.
@tuathadesidhe15303 жыл бұрын
... Do you seriously believe that a mother is going to have "less memories" of her child just because she didn't name it? I can assure you that women who's babies die even at birth or during pregnancy grieve that child in many ways for the rest of their lives - And they name them, even if they keep that name to themselves. Many people even today don't officially name their children until they are 1 or older, names are important.

I enjoyed you video very much. The images were great. I'd like to wade in and make a contribution to the comments below. First, I'd like to present my opinion that nobody really knows much about the beliefs and values people had during the medieval period, particularly in Northern European regions where very little was written down, and what was written down was either done so long after the viking age ended, such as in the Icelandic sagas, or if contemporaneously, then by Christian monks who had a clear agenda to proselytize their monotheistic religion. I think that most of what is in this video is well reasoned, but there is a great difference between the highly stratified and segregated societies of Christian Europe, and the more decentralized societies of the early Germanic and Scandinavian pre-Christian cultures. Anyone who thinks women were completely repressed in any culture cannot know many women! Also, it is true to say that a wealthy woman had a lot more rights than a slave man, for example, showing that status was of more value than gender. But let's not forget that a lot of the early anti-female values that infiltrated and warped the early Christian movement came from Germanic conquerors, who brought their own culture and fused it into Roman society. And this video forgets to mention the role of children as slaves too. There were slave children who had no rights, just as there were princes who had quite a lot of privilege. It is always difficult to simplify any field of knowledge, and the study of history is no exception.

A note about average life expectancy: keep in mind that this is an average statistic. This means it takes into account the infant mortality rate, age of those killed in war, sickness, and young women who died in child birth. This obviously brings down the average life expectancy. In other words, you wouldnt just keel over at 45 in the viking age. If you were lucky, or well off, some individuals could live past 60.

They were not that much different, really. In fact the societies that they invaded were mostly Germanic societies like the Franks and the Saxons who were themselves pagan when they invaded the former Roman empire, which was itself pagan until the emperor Constantine made Christianity the official state religion...and much of what people find objectionable about Catholicism (like its attitude towards women) is in fact Greek or Roman in origin rather than being part of the original teachings of Jesus.
@Usammityduzntafraidofanythin6 жыл бұрын
Societies aren't defined by their religion. Religion is merely what's in their heads. All the technology and economy are affected by the hands of the people themselves. The art and expression starts off as mere means of entertainment or propaganda - so no wonder much of ancient history focuses on ethnicity/culture and religion, given the attraction to period art. But that ignores how it was for most people, and hence should be only a small category instead of the whole story.

@Thomas H while I see the logic and grand choice of words in your argument, I would have to disagree. Christianity was crested when the one true god was tortured, mentally physically and emotionally, just to prove how much he loves us and to give us one more chance of heaven. But, you cant see that, because you dont care what the actual god said because that doesnt get people on your side. You instead focus on what false christians did, many of which was unbiblical and discouraged by god.

I like your videos all in all, but I don't like the labelling you'r giving the people of the specific age and region most of the times. I really understand the label "viking" since everybody knows what is meant, but I'd like to see a change in that, especially for an otherwise good, fact based channel. On the other hand I'm not sure if there really is and what the correct term would be, maybe Danes, Norsemen, Ancient Skandinavians or others.
@Skjalden6 жыл бұрын
I know some people don't like the word Vikings used for these people, but it would be too confusing for people to understand what I talk about if I started to use clans and regions. We also do not have all the names of these regions anymore, some were written down others not. I think the term Vikings is the best word to use, people know who they were. Unless people already have a lot of knowledge about the Vikings, they would not understand when I talk about Jellings or Aroses etc. Therefore I use the word Vikings and then split it into Danes, Swedes, and Norwegians, so people can follow along.

It was tolerable until you preached to us about vaccines. A lot more goes into the complex issue of vaccines. Also, what a stereotype to say that people in developing countries have a lot of kids so that they would be taken care of in their old age. Children are gifts from God and many parents are open to life at all stages and/or participate in NFP because they believe in it and because forms of artificial birth control actually cause abortions.

The narrator sounds a bit like Arnold Schwarzenegger! Viking children were like all children all over the world in cultures that didn’t have schools and most modern day conveniences. Child mortality and women dying in childbirth was very common. Girls tended to marry early and most people didn’t live very long either. 50 years old was considered elderly, etc., so this video is kind of stupid because the sagas were written by only one person AND who his agenda plus how do we know that modern day scholars have the correct interpretation?
