The Raven Banner

The Raven banner… the flag flown by the Vikings when they raided the shores of their victims across Europe, or so the story goes…
In reality, the raven banner was not a universal Viking flag, because the people in Scandinavia were not one nation. The society in Scandinavia was split into many small clans at the beginning of the Viking age, and therefore every clan or Viking chieftain had their own flags and symbols to identify their clan.

The Raven banner was hand stitched by Sigurds Mother in the Orkneys. She was a sorceress and the Banner was a magic symbol. The modern version is a reference to this Magic Symbol. The crucifix, the swastika and the peace sign are all Magic Symbols, they contain more information than their superficial appearance.

Liked the video Skjalden. At first I thought the soldiers carried the Raven flag into battle asking Odin for guidence but now I know there's a lot more to it than just that. I was wondering though, how much do you know about the old Germanic concepts of Innangard and Utangard. All I know about them is that they're supposed to represent orderly society and chaotic wilderness, respectively. I'm making a video that briefly touches upon them and just wanted to hear you're thoughts on them since you're like a walking encyclopedia of Norse Culture.

Thanks for this interesting video. I think that it's important to underline the idea of nations was not the thought of the day but a more modern concept in Europe. If a man and his kith and kin went to settle in other lands the new land then became the homeland for those that would remain after. These are the roots of many races.

Hi i love your posts i do fly a rectangular version of this flag i also fly the white Wyvern of Wessex as i live in Wiltshire England which is old Viking and Saxon country the battle of Edington was fought about 3 miles from where i live. Although no one knows the exact site.

I'm not too well versed in nordic mythology but I would like to propose a meaning for the raven banner. Here's what I do know about Odin's ravens: Huginn and Muninn (translates to Thought and Memory) flies around Asgard and Midgard and tells Odin of whats going on over there every day. Odin is afraid that one day the birds are not to return to him. Especially Muninn (or the memory). TLDR; 1. Maybe the banner represents the raven so that Huginn or Muninn will see the warriors, and tell Odin of their bravery in battle. 2. Maybe the raven represents Muninn so that the warriors will not be forgotten, as Muninn means exactly that; memory.

the raven drags the light from east to west in the morning (sun rise) and drags the light from west to east in the evening (sun set). This is actually true today, because if you watch the sky you will indeed see Ravens/crows flying in these directions in early morning and evening. Therefore, i postulate that the vikings by showing a raven in their boat's flag, are actually following the passage of light itself, which is a major positive. Try to argue which my claim, go ahead. I am right, because It feels right, naturally. Not a human lieing Christian intervention contributed to my claim, just pure nature and my own natural instinct came to that concluson,
