What are your thoughts 4 years later? I'm considering buying one used.
@BigBoiTurboslav9 ай бұрын
@@jdot5974 Haha I don't even remember writing this! But my thoughts have been on the positive side. Reliability wise the car has held up strong so far, it's of course not that old but I haven't seen any early red flags that I would've had in the past EXCEPT for the DSG gearbox. As I live in Australia manual isn't an option here and the DSG unit itself isn't very impressive nor that reliable. The DSG just feels so sluggish and kept popping up with an error message when driving so they replaced the entire mechatronics unit, luckily under warranty. So if you're buying a used one I would recommend to avoid the DSG as it seems that VWG cars are absolutely cursed with it. Heard from friends back home who all drive manual that their ones have very nicely clutches and gear shifting though. Besides the DSG the build quality itself is very nice. The paint and coating of the car is holding up incredibly well under the harsh Australian sun and generally the materials feel quite high quality. The interior is plastic of course but doesn't have the same noisy creaking that a Toyota Yaris would have. Caught quite a few pebbles and got some pretty big hail hit the car and don't even have one micro dent. Interior also feels like you're in a way larger car but doesn't drive like it. Driving wise it hasn't changed much since I got the car but the driving is really fun. The car handles quite well and is nimble too. Definitely doesn't feel like a hot hatch by any means but it's a lot more enjoyable than other economy hatchbacks I've tried. I have the upper trim level so I have the sports suspension and 18 inch wheels so that helps the driving experience. It does make for an incredibly bumpy drive though. I don't care myself but if you go for this config be prepared to feel every small bump on the road. Hope this helps! Feel free to ask if you need to inquire about anything.

I think it might possibly be the first time the Skoda model in this class hasn't got the newest platform first? The Mk1 and Mk2 Fabia's all benefited from the latest chassis way before that of it's VW group rivals previously. Great review as always, a smart looking car still - but you'd need to play spot the difference to see what's been done in the latest facelift!

Brilliant review (much like the one for the Honda Jazz)! Currently looking at purchasing a supermini with an automatic gearbox as usage will include a daily commute in slow rush-hour traffic. Especially going home in the evening will include 15-20 minutes a day going at near-standstill, ie slipping on the clutch even at 1st gear. Should I be worried about getting a DSG Fabia (MK3 or MK3 FL) for this driving scenario? It feels so well put together and the 110 BHP engine suits the car, but the internet is full of stories of issues with the DQ200 dry-clutch transmission and the risks of overheating when driving at really slow speeds (not being as well cooled as the wet-clutch DQ250)? Or is this more of an issue related to the same transmission in larger cars like Octavias with more powerful engines?

Good tip about the chassis; don't buy one now, buy one in a year or so when they have upgraded it. I have an 05 Fabia, had it for 11 years, it's a great car. I have to admit to being disappointed in the way pricing has gone with Skoda; the Monte Carlo model starts at over £17K, a LOT of money for what it is. If you really want one buy second hand; seen one in Auto Trader for £10K with 16, 000 on the clock (breaking in mileage). Let some other mug take the £17K+ hit brand new...

Still have my 05 Fabia htp which I bought s/h for £3500 in 2009 with 35k on the clock, fsh. It's been really good, and is ideal for me. It's approaching 100K now and I'd like to replace it, but it'll be a while before I can afford anything else. But it'll be with another Fabia, I suspect.

@@bankox4, I think the issue with these is the long term reliability. Great if you can afford new cars but a nightmare when you buy second hand and the clutch pack needs to be replaced.... Fuel prices are disgraceful. Im running on premium as well because e10 is known to cause engine problems. Its widely reported on the internet so I would never put that in my car now. How it even got past legislation beats me. Subarus are not cheap to run and although I would miss mine because the boxer engine sounds fantastic plus the handling from the AWD is incredible, its costing too much in petrol so may have to get something more practical. This Skoda is a great car for the money. Excellent engine and comfy ride. According to Honest John, the 1 litre tsi gets a 51 mpg real world average so thats far better than 24-25 mpg on my commute ! Might go and look this weekend.
