Back in 2016, I changed out the head bolts with ARP head studs, so I also put in the SLS valve buckets and billet idler pulleys in my 2010 S63. I haven’t had the lifter tick since then.

My G500 has developed this annoying ticking sound after sitting for a couple of months. The interesting thing is that there are only 29 miles since my last Mobil 1 0W-40 synthetic oil change. I greatly appreciate the time you have put into creating this helpful video. The additive seems like a wise step for multiple reasons. Thank you

When not on use for a longer tome period, oil can “leak” from the pocket lifters. Will be filled up agin after startup an some driving, not harmful..

I’ve tried both oil change techniques and prefer the classic method on my c63. The oil cooler has about half a liter of oil in it. Change it every 6 months no matter what the mileage. I’m using M1 5w40 European formula. It has the highest levels of zinc which has a cushioning effect on the lifters also. All the M1 mb229.5 approved oils have the same amount. Just a little more time and you remove virtually all the oil. So far no ticking on my 2013.

I'm not sure if these engines are the same but on the M113, it has a non-return valve between the oil pump and block which keeps much of the oil in the top-end from draining back into the sump.

I have a ML63. If the car has been sitting, the cam shafts will compress the oil out of a compressed lifter and you will get a tick for a few seconds on a cold start. This is normal until the oil flows back in. If the oil is cold and thick, it might take a few more seconds, but will stop ticking. If your engine is ticking at normal idle, then you have true lifter tick issue. I also let the car come off high idle to normal idle before moving the car. This should also put less stress on valve train. The joy of race engine inspired design.

As an FCP Euro employee. I'm glad that we're supporting other fellow M156 owners! Question: were you getting lifter tick all the time, or still just during startup like most people experience? My M156 went from dead silent, to some tick, to constant tick within a few days. Trying to be... calm.

Sick video and sick car! I, unfortunately, had this lifter tick. Upon opening the valve cover, one lifter on the driverside upper bank was so bad, it had a hole in it. The adjacent cam was extremely worn. I bit the bullet and replaced all the lifters with the upgraded black series lifters and changed all 4 cams. It wasn't cheap, to say the least haha, next step is replacing the plate in the cam adjuster with 63motorsports version so I won't have to deal with that issue in the future.

Honestly I have seen very few M156 engines have lifter tick unless high mileage with poor oil change history. Usually most of the time noise concerns with this engine is rattling camshaft adjusters especially during cold startup. What I am seeing most though is broken or collapsed engine mounts. I probably due 2-3 sets a month. Some get so bad that the oil pan contacts the sway bar.

I got it for an incredibly good deal almost 5 months ago and it's time for me to do it's first oil change. Please correct me if this isn't what I should do but I plan on 1.) Putting the lifter additive in and driving it hard, then 2.) Put engine flush in and follow the instructions, 3.) Change the oil and add Mos, Mos2 or Cera Tec. My question is which of the three should I use? Also, do I need to drain any oil before I add the lifter additive and/or engine flush? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Yup. I get the lifter tick maybe a couple times per year. Wait till oil is at 100c then redline it a couple times = problem solved. Also get the cam adjuster noise sometimes. Both of these issues tends to come if I’ve only driven the car a short distance without redlining it the day before. The M156 is a noisy engine, I think our paranoia gets the better of us sometimes. It’s a race car engine, it needs to be driven hard (and have good oil changes!).

Marvel Mystery Oil. "Ticking lifters are a nasty symptom. It wears both your patience and your engine lifespan thin. Another benefit of using the Marvel Mystery Oil as an oil additive is that it takes care of the symptom for you. A reason for ticking lifters may be built up oil deposits, which prevent the pushrods or camshaft to make contact with the lifters. Through its cleaning properties, the Mystery Oil can make all deposits disappear for an obstruction-free motion of all moving parts of your engine."

But I run overall 0W35 and change oil every 1500 miles (filter goes to 15,000) to keep the GDI soot minimal. Don't use MMO in 0W20, as SAE 20 is already rated for economy driving only in GF6 form. GF5 0W-20 that Jag recommends was discontinued in May 2020 by ILSAC for poor engine protection in GDIs leading to premature timing chain and bearing failures. MMO is only SAE 3. @DMountains
@DMountains 6 ай бұрын
If the tick is due to the lifters the additive will solve the problem. It may still tick for a bit after start up. When the engine sits for a while enough oil drains so the problem comes back. An engine flush, oil change with an additive is an option. The problem is ultimately due to a design flaw.

I just noticed this noise after doing some work on my car, it is a 2010 e550 coupe. Is there any other reason for this noise? I've been having a starting issue intermitently that i've heard could be fuel injectors or the fuel pump. Could fuel injectors cause this? I'm tempted just to try this product on my engine and see if it does something. Oh yea I also have a leaking oil filter/cooler housing but it leaks about a quart every 4 months and I always fill it up as soon as I get the indication.
@skrrtgarage3922
@skrrtgarage3922 3 жыл бұрын
Engines are sensitive to have low oil. If at anytime your engine oil level is low, you could starve some areas. Fuel injectors are usually fine unless stuck open or gummed up. Depending on mileage you may need to replace them. Honestly, there are so many things that could cause a weird start I don’t know where to begin

Its a better idea to pump oil out, that way you never wear out your steel drain plug in aluminum threads. In some cars, like Jags, theres a pump nipple, so draining takes 3 to 5 minutes start to finish, with no jacking or decladding the bottom. Even without a built-in pump nipple its a 4-5 min job.
