I am a bit late to the SKS party, being a young child in the 90s....Paid 427 (380 plus sales tax) out the door for my Norinco last June. Imported by B West Tucson, still in the cosmoline. It's a great gun. My first center fire semi auto rifle.

I passed on the SKS when they were 60 to $70 a piece. I could've bought one a week easily. it took over a decade to reach $140 for one. I bought an AK NIB for $270 and a 1440-1540 round case of non-corrosive ammo was $189. The only time I saw cheaper ammo was the corrosive stuff in those bug sardine cans. I bought ammo by the box, of quality, and was around $2.49-$4 forever. purchased ammo in bags that might've been reloaded and even after I parted ways with it, i saw good prices until this last year. problem for years after the 90s was there was little to no bulk as the shop owners typically were only getting a case or two to take the 20 rd boxes and price them. Here I sit almost 30 years later and I have an overpriced SKS because I grew frustrated not finding ammo for a different rifle. I would never have paid the price but it came with a case, several mags and most importantly is a red/green dot probably worth more than the rifle even in times of inflation for the rifle. Damn hindsight. 1 or 2 SKSs per week, probably could have done an AK each month also and ammo randomly. oh, and the Tokarev pistols were about $40 each and I don't think that background checks were needed from the first guy that was selling all this great stuff. H&K rifles were still under $800 gently used but ARs were not all that common yet. You could also get AP rounds back then but I didn't really see the point and foolishly passed. Hindsight now but had a notion back then to have started buying SKS and AKs but I never liked the Tokarev pistols but I didn't think realize how nice virtually untraceable and "throw away priced" pistols might be someday. Never again to miss out on great deals.

we used to buy them all the time for $75 in a box with all the accessories. I agree that the prices now are ridiculous. If you are wanting something that will do everything an SKS will do but better there are better options. I love old military rifles however and can understand buying one even if “20 years ago they were practically giving them away”. Cool old guns with alot of history. Thank you for the video!

The only parts that I've 3D printed are custom foregrips, stocks, and cheek risers. While I had success with a 3D printed lower (only lasted about 600 rounds) I wouldn't try to make an upper as the density, flex, and strength may not be there.
@robspear03

@@tfbtv Still, not field stripped. Field stripping is the removal of parts and/or groups of such without the use of the armorer or any convoluted tool use. The mag and trigger group can be removed with the tip of a bullet. Therefore, you did not strip the weapon.

These were very popular in Australia during the late 80's and early 90's. Hearing of the US ban at that time makes me wonder if it was responsible for the Au market being flooded. There must be thousands buried in barrels that weren't surrendered when the laws changed.

Idk why people say “this gun isn’t worth this much and I find that ridiculous!”.... it’s a non imported milsurp gun with history , known reliability , and nostalgia as a lot of westerners first rifles and people are willing to pay $500 plus for them... so yeah they are worth that amount. I actually picked up an M21 0296 Norinco for around $420 recently. While that's still a lot of money, it's in great shape and was still caked with cosmoline in a ton of places that required me to take it apart nearly completely (like the gas tube, recoil spring, and inside the bolt carrier) and I don't think it's been fired more than once or twice. All the serial numbers match except the magazine, oddly enough, and it didn't have the spike bayonet or cleaning rod. I took it to a range last weekend and it was a lot of fun to shoot!

I'm disappointed by all the "not worth it" comments. If you were lucky enough to pick one up for $30 to $80 bucks, good for you. However, if you bought a new car in 1994 the average cost was $12,350.00. In 2014 the average cost is $33,560. In either case their value goes down as you use them. We’re long past peak supply of surplus SKS’s. Prices going up as supplies run out shouldn’t be a surprise. You can still pick them up from $330 to $425 for an unissued Yugo. WASR-10's are starting at $600. Though not as functional out of the box as an AK the SKS is better built than a WASR and easier to shoot accurately. A fairer comparison would be to the Mini 30 which starts at around $550 used to $750 new. Love or hate the Mini, the SKS is priced way below it. So even if you love the Mini, and hate the SKS I think you're hard pressed to say the SKS isn't priced appropriately. While it is a shame you can't pick one up as an impulse buy like you would a candy bar any more. The current price point isn't bad relatively speaking. Just make sure you want one before spending the money. The price is a bit higher then just pocket money. If you do want one, don't wait until they're the same price as a WASR.

There are only 7 parts you have to take apart to field strip this thing? That’s awesome. I wish they were more simple though. An FAL for example, you just press the lever, and to remove the bolt and carrier, you just break it open like a shotgun. Then you clean your bolt and carrier, put them back in, and close it up.

I still think the 350-450 price on the Chinese type 56 SKS is a good buy. You're getting an all milled/machine forged rifle. Semi auto with a 10 round internal mag, strong wood and steel construction. The damn thing is beyond rugged, and nearly as reliable as the AK platform. Something like that today would easily run you $1,500+ to produce and buy. I paid 500 for my Tula Russian 1954 SKS. Happy with that price. I think it's kind of a case of "If I knew then what I knew now." I had to pay 400 for my Swiss K31 but no one can deny that to produce and buy that kind precision/quality bolt rifle new today would easily run you $2,500.

not to mention that you're not limited to just 10 rounds, you can buy aftermarket 30 and 40 round mags for the SKS. it's illegal to install it unless you also replace enough other parts (and i'm not even sure if it's enforced very often), but in a SHTF situation who's going to care or stop you from using it?

Why not extend this to taking the firing pin and extractor out of the bolt and taking the trigger pack and the magazine assembly out of the receiver? There IS a big downside, though. It's pinned to 5 rounds. While that does help conserve ammo, it's a real nuisance and serves no legitimate purpose. There's ways around it. Like getting an adapter for it and using 7.62x39 pistol mags. But it's an expensive loophole...

They still are a good deal especially if you live in a state with a lot of anti gun laws. Nobody produces an SKS in the USA like some people do with AK47 rifles because the SKS has a milled receiver which would make a new production gun cost over $1000 today and nobody would buy one at that price. Producing a AK47 leaves an actual profit margin because it's just an inexpensive stamped steel receiver.

Helpful video, a Romanian SKS was among the first guns I picked up, I think it cost me between 300 to 400 dollars? Crazy considering my older relatives were able to get one for like 100. Now though I see people trying to sell them for 600.

Hey my SKS's guide spring is floppy, I don't think its exposed to be like that, anyone know if that's alright? I haven't fired it yet and I'm curious and slightly concerned. Should I just order a new guide spring?

6 years ago he said $500 is not worth it, too much money. A Russian sks today will be anywhere from $600-$1000 depending on quality.

Somebody should make new SKS rifles here in the states. Keep them around $200, you'd make a killing. It's a handy all around rifle that can be made cheap.

The average good condition Sino Soviet or commerical Chinese rifles sell for $350-$400.00. Unmolsted Russians of specific years and arsenals fetch bigger bucks and then you have the East Germans, NVA's, and North Koreans which are going to fetch bring back prices in the thousands.
