No need to have any spirit for cleaning . Just disassembly the rifle and put the parts in a stove for two minutes on the temeprature of 50c. After that you can clean it by ordinary rag. Sorry for my bad english. p.s. I served Yugoslav Army in 1982 and I have had this rifle. This is the best rifle on the world. Good video, best luck !

good morning gentlemen, after discovering your website and watching countless videos about the SKS, i finally broke down and purchased one of your rifles and 1000 rounds of ammo for it this past Sunday, i cant wait to get it. your videos are what convinced me to finally make the purchase, and not be intimidated in the dis-assembly and re-assembly and cleaning process.

Picked up an unissued Yugo SKS packed in cosmoline at a gun show earlier this year. I've wanted an SKS for a while, but the used ones I would see at the shows were all beat up & shot to death. ( some would call that - patina ) I ran the serial # and determined it was made in 1970. I feel very lucky to have gotten a new SKS, and a very good quality SKS. I thought I had done a pretty good job removing the cosmoline, but when I heat it up with a lot of gun fire it still leaches a little comoline from parts unknown. If anyone on here hasn't bought one of these Yugos, pull the trigger and buy one. You'll be glad you did.

SKS is a grate shooting rifle. Lot's of fun to shoot. Easy to clean. Some what easy to load. Get one. Mine was made in Russia in 1953. Bought it in 1994 for about $100.00 in California.

I just washed mine with piping hot water at the sink. That cleaned up the metal parts pretty good. I let the hot water run for another 15-20 minutes afterwards so the cosmoline wouldn't harden up again and clog my drain. The stock I left in the sun for a few hours every day. Cosmoline would bleed out of the wood due to the heat, and I would wash that off with hot water again. After 4-5 days of doing this I found the stock to be clean enough.

Got mine yesterday, turned out to be a 1973. Also came with a couple extra muzzle breaks not mentioned in any video or description. Superb quality, looks like it came out of the factory yesterday. Also should mention it has more cosmoline than every other arsenal rifle I've ever owned, combined. Took a long time to clean, but worth it.

Id recommend disassembling the rifle and cleaning the stock off of the action and barrel. I drop all metal parts into my bucket of cleaner and let them soak while I clean the stock. It helps with the bolt and firing pin.

Bought one from you a couple weeks ago and spent one Saturday afternoon cleaning it up as described. Sent the bolt and carrier off to Murray's Gunsmithing for some prep work and I'm looking forward to taking it to the range soon. Thanks for the mineral spirit lesson. That's what I used, along with some brake cleaner, and I really got it clean as a whistle. Hopefully, the wife will let me get another one before you sell out!

Got my sks shipped yesterday, the thing was caked in the stuff to the point where i could hardly pull the bolt back, watched the video and sprayed it down with some mineral spirits. it pretty much just melts most of it off. Great video, super useful

A heat gun and/or steam cleaner is invaluable for getting the heavy cosmoline off. The more stubborn stuff I use mineral spirits on.

Something about the added bells and whistles on the Yugo SKS's make this rifle so tempting to buy, even after having a Norinco.

Hey man just saw your video, thanks for the tips! I just got my Yugo SKS rifle today, also from a crate and covered in cosmoline. After disassembly, Mineral Spirits took everything right off of each piece. I used cue tips to get the hard-to-get spaces, but overall most of the gunk is gone. Thanks again! Can't wait to fire this bad boy c:

I inherited one of these, and also a bunch of American Eagle 7.62x39mm Soviet 124gr Full Metal Jacket ammo, and I'm curious if that ammo will work with this gun or not? I also got some (but not much) 7.62x39mm Norinco ammo (in a yellow box) where the tip is just a bit larger than the American Eagle ammo. The casing is the same size, just the tip is sized differently. I just don't want to damage the rifle with the American Eagle ammo, as it was my late fathers. Thank you!

If your afraid to use Mineral Spirits on your stock because it can remove some of the finish use WD-40. Works well and won't harm the finish..

As far as cleaning up the stock you can put the disassembled stock in a black plastic trash bag and wrap it with some paper towels or something to absorb the cosmoline and place it in the direct sunlight for a few hours and let the heat sweat the cosmoline out of the stock as much as possible. I still trying to decide between a Yugo and a Norinco SKS, I know Classic has been out of stock on the Norinco's for a while, but Yugo's seem to be plentiful right now.

I just ordered mine yesterday! Any thoughts on using my Harbor Freight steam cleaner for this dreaded task? Is there any reason not to? I'm thinking about hanging the parts from a clothesline and letting the steam do all the work! It seams to me this would also do a good job of drawing most of the cosmo out of the stock.

Vítězslav Zpěvak mine is a red color hardwood. I used chain oil on mine as it leaves a red tint brought out the natural beauty was already there. Maybe not going to work with a blonde stock. I would ask someone who does furniture restoration for better answer. But that really worked well for me...

Get a 4" section of PVC pipe at Lowe's, Home Depot or Menards. Put cap on the end, no need to use pvc solvent, friction fit is OK. Remove the stock from the rifle, disassemble the bolt and put them in a try with the mineral spirits. Take the rifle and lower it into the pvc pipe, then fill it with the mineral spirits. Let the rifle soak for a few hours, every 15min. just pull on a string you tied to the rifle, the mineral spirits will dissolve the cosmoline. It is Science but works like Magic! Don't put it in the shower.

Hey! Ben! Love all your videos. I subscribed to your channel here and I just bought my FIRST! SKS. I'm so excited! Can't wait to pick it up. I've been wanting one of these rifles for a long time ever since I've heard about them and learned about them. I just have a question though. Is that Mineral Spirits you have in the spray bottle and the bucket when you were showing the cleaning video? I know that's probably a stupid question. Anyway, I love Classic Firearms!!!!!!!! I looooooooooooove the SKS! I bought mine in the mid-1990s for something like $80. It had a synthetic stock, looked like fiberglass or something... It was Chinese if I remember right. Norinco? It's been awhile, so I might be wrong. Damn, I wish I still had that gun!

I appreciate the video and it was helpful. Not all guns, even the same make, are created equal. To get that trigger assembly back into the gun was something an 800 gorilla wouldn't have had the strength to do. I had to use a vice grip, compress it as hard as I could, then get a mallet to hit a phillips screwdriver that rested on the trigger release pin, and then with ALL that done, the assembly would snap in.

Hey folks! Serious inquiry here: I've noted recently that California Hardware stores including Lowes no longer stock standard mineral spirits- They all now say "substitute" on the labels to comply with some newish state regulations... Anyone reading here have any proven alternative suggestions?? I was thinking to give some artist's grade Gamsol or Turpenoid a shot... It says it's petroleum based?
