Skunk Baxter : Played bass for Jimi Hendrix, lead for Steely Dan, lead for the Doobies and now he,s a big time missle defense advisor for the pentagon...Kinda makes us feel like an under-achiever, doesn't it?

@@sgringo Skunk played for Jimmy James and the Blue Flames for several months along side Randy California later of Spirit (I Got a Line on You). I met Randy when he was with Spirit at the Waikiki Shell concert in Honolulu. A friend and I made fake Teen Magazine press passes and got to meet the band backstage, watch the concert from there and go to a party afterwards (pretty tame really). LOT of drinking...Randy told us when we left that he knew we were phonies but was proud we thought enough of the band to try it. Very nice chap. We all had a good laugh.

Many of the phrases I used to attribute to Skunk were played by others like Larry Carlton, but that's not taking anything away from Jeff. He was just dealing with a couple of strange characters in Donald, and Walter. Steve Lukather of "Toad-o" (as Zappa referenced them) is behind a lot of tunes too, and before him, people like Glen Campbell. Weird, huh?

The entire song was rushed as live performances often are, and Jeff left little space in his solo. I'm reminded of the line from ":Amadeus" when the King, and Salieri told Mozart that his song had "too many notes;" that "there are just only so many notes that the human ear can hear." Virtuoso musicians like Skunk need to realize that what they play is often way over the musical head of many listeners, so in a way, at times it has to be "dumbed down" for them. Also there was way too much mid-range clutter with instruments playing over one another, but it looks like they were having fun.

Black and white Fender. Paid $275 for it. 2nd party owner. He lived in SM Cyn.. Had 27 tone variables. Triple switch togle, Was stolen from me in SF in 85. I wrote my best songs on that guitar, which I still play today. God, I miss that guitar. And I sm only a very good rhythem gtar player. Occassional soloist. He used to be a great player. His skills are now closer to the guys playing cover tunes in my local bowling alley. Fun to listen to, but a FAR cry from the state-of-the-art studio musician he used to be. It's not an age thing ... there are plenty of guitarists his age who HAVE kept their skills up. And maybe this was just a bad night for him. But I've listened to other songs from this awards show, and he's no better (although the backing band is better - particularly the vocals). He's absolutely a hall of fame worthy guitarist - and likely knows his own playing is several notches below what it used to be.
