Skunk Baxter : Played bass for Jimi Hendrix, lead for Steely Dan, lead for the Doobies and now he,s a big time missle defense advisor for the pentagon...Kinda makes us feel like an under-achiever, doesn't it?

@@sgringo Skunk played for Jimmy James and the Blue Flames for several months along side Randy California later of Spirit (I Got a Line on You). I met Randy when he was with Spirit at the Waikiki Shell concert in Honolulu. A friend and I made fake Teen Magazine press passes and got to meet the band backstage, watch the concert from there and go to a party afterwards (pretty tame really). LOT of drinking...Randy told us when we left that he knew we were phonies but was proud we thought enough of the band to try it. Very nice chap. We all had a good laugh.

When you sturdy Rock History, Skunk is always there. If you're a kid and want to know where a ton of lead guitar hooks come from, you are looking at him right here in this video. Many of the phrases I used to attribute to Skunk were played by others like Larry Carlton, but that's not taking anything away from Jeff. He was just dealing with a couple of strange characters in Donald, and Walter. Steve Lukather of "Toad-o" (as Zappa referenced them) is behind a lot of tunes too, and before him, people like Glen Campbell. Weird, huh?

The entire song was rushed as live performances often are, and Jeff left little space in his solo. I'm reminded of the line from ":Amadeus" when the King, and Salieri told Mozart that his song had "too many notes;" that "there are just only so many notes that the human ear can hear." Virtuoso musicians like Skunk need to realize that what they play is often way over the musical head of many listeners, so in a way, at times it has to be "dumbed down" for them. Also there was way too much mid-range clutter with instruments playing over one another, but it looks like they were having fun.

OMG. Living in Topanga Cyn in 1977, I bought a 72 used Strat Jeff Baxter owned and modified. Black and white Fender. He modified it with three triple throws, modified toggle switches. Black and white Fender. Paid $275 for it. 2nd party owner. He lived in SM Cyn.. Had 27 tone variables. Triple switch togle, Was stolen from me in SF in 85. I wrote my best songs on that guitar, which I still play today. God, I miss that guitar. And I sm only a very good rhythem gtar player. Occassional soloist. But to have played a gtar that Jeff Baxter touched and modified? Priceless.

The trouble: It is impossible to replace Donald Fagen. It's the same to listen to Steve Hackett and his genesis-interpretations without Peter Gabriel or Phil Collins singing. But still I like this version, because it is so 70ish. And Skunk definitely knows how to rock. :) And let's not forget the huge loss of Walter Becker. RIP Walter.

He used to be a great player. His skills are now closer to the guys playing cover tunes in my local bowling alley. Fun to listen to, but a FAR cry from the state-of-the-art studio musician he used to be. It's not an age thing ... there are plenty of guitarists his age who HAVE kept their skills up. And maybe this was just a bad night for him. But I've listened to other songs from this awards show, and he's no better (although the backing band is better - particularly the vocals). He's absolutely a hall of fame worthy guitarist - and likely knows his own playing is several notches below what it used to be.

As the leader of a damn good cover band, I can tell you there's no harder music to copy than Steely Dan, even for elements of Steely Dan. Other than maybe the first album, you never had the parts that wound up on the album played at the same time by the same musicians. It was bits and pieces spliced together by two geniuses who were beyond perfectionists. And let's don't forget that Skunk is 30 something years older in this performance and probably not playing his ass off wit all else he has going. I should play so good!

Lots of critiques from viewers and most with merit. My take is that it was a lot of fun and entertaining. Yes, it lacked much of polish it needed, but I just take it at face value. I wish I could jam with the likes of these guys.

Holly crap is that mix bad!! Hardly hear Baxter vocals. Someone's guitar is screaming loud! Horns louder than anything too! Backing vocals louder than Baxter. Sorry to criticize but you really needed a pro mixer handling video recording. But... boy Baxter can shred! At least that is coming through well!

The song was about 10 times too fast. The original groove of the song was much slower. This could have been stellar if they'd hadn't rushed the daylights out of it. Sounds like a 4th set bar band on the next to last song of the night when it could have been much better. Jeff is an excellent player, but even excellent players need a reasonable tempo.

Don't be a slave to the original recording man! Yes Skunk's tone is kinda thin due to all the processing he's using, but it's still a lot of fun to see these guys play some of the most difficult music to reproduce live. Just dig it, I'm sure Becker and Fagan did....

Skunk is great of course but I could very much do without the keyboard - especially in the outro. Covers up Skunk's playing too much.

I listen to the criticisms here and have to wonder if any of you ever cut an album in your life. There is a big difference in what is played live or done in a studio, then processed like meat in a Mc Donald's. Which is WHY this is an absolute treasure. I will bet you dime to a dollar none of these guys practiced together for weeks months or even days before pulling this off. This is a LIVE performance, not processed label burgers. It is an amazing performance by some really talented legends most of you are clueless of.
