I'm in this video somewhere playing soprano bugle. The images really jar my memories! Afterwards we played national anthems with the corps at the show while sitting in the stands at the left side. You can see the stands near the end of the video. I loved the European venues. You could tell they had never heard anything as loud and intense as us and Malaguena virtually drags them to their feet. It was like that every performance. We knew we were hot sh*t that year!

A friend of mine from England marched with the Scouts in 95 I think when they did Malaga, he was in the quartet. Terence Smith. I don't know if you were still there then but he was in The Sunrisers over here and I was on Contra. Great memories. I was at this show too. And yes we were all blown away. Loud as f***😂 awesome show! Also it's the difference when you can do it pretty much full time. In England we only did weekends and didn't go on tour the same way you did. Obviously the number of members you have in the States as well. But still it's mighty impressive.

I was wondering if the crowd was going to jump to their feet at the end, but they made it. You just can't help it with those horns giving it all they've got on the last notes. Those folks don't know how lucky they were to see that show in that moment in time. What a great championship show.

I've watched this show so many times before, I never knew they added the cymbal flares later on.

This is the first video I have ever seen of Madison from earlier that year. That was my first DCI Championship I attended live in KC. As I recall.... Madison stormed into quarter finals that year and won the show

Madison wasn’t in quarterfinals. This was the last year that the top corps did not perform on Thursday.

There is a part of me that TRULY believes that the 1988 season is what "ticked off" DCI against the Scouts (as well as the Scouts' continued "WOW THE CROWD" philosophy, as opposed to kowtow to the judges) -- Madison goes to Europe, doesn't participate in the "regular" DCI season, then burns down Arrowhead with a scorched earth performance where the crowd reaction to the Scouts at DCI '88 Finals rivaled the volume of the crowd at a Chiefs game ... if the Scouts had not won that night, the crowd would have rioted and the judges would have been marked for death ... after that night in KC, DCI just. kept. THUMPING. on Madison, finally resulting in the Scouts dropping out of top 12 in 2002 while the host corps. All those years, DCI became seduced by all the BS spouted by the Allentown Predator (Corps = Band, etc.) but the crowds ALWAYS reacted to Madison, year after year after year after year, as the judges turned their backs on the Scouts ... NOW that SCV has gone inactive for 2023, I now wonder how long before DCI drops below a dozen active units (last year, DCA ginned up a three-class structure, with only four units per, because all-age corps is VERY slow to recover from the pandemic lockdowns) ... It is the treatment of the LAST TRUE DRUM CORPS by DCI and the sycophants of the Allentown Predator that caused me to break with DCI after my nephew's final season with Magic of Orlando in 2003 ... Nothing connected with DCI has seen any financial support from me since, and given that I see DCI as the summer extension of WGI, where visual spectacle gets the points, and aural output has become second-banana to the visual gymnastics (since any sound you want to produce can be electronically generated -- Bluecoats "bend", anyone?!?), until DCI figures out how to once again legitimately reward marching musical prowess (as opposed to some playing while not moving while everyone else scurries about while NOT playing), I will continue to eschew what the activity has become ... in fact, maybe it is time for DCI to truthfully rebrand as Bands of America-Independent World Class, since there is truly no difference in instrumentation between these units and the most highly-bankrolled scholastic bands within BOA ... If you have an issue with my opinion, just remember that is IS just that -- MY opinion, and only DCI might change it, if they can ... so please don't waste your time trying to proselytize or denigrate me ... just let me continue to watch these videos of the golden years of the Madison Scouts, and enjoy the PURE crowd reactions ...

Allentown predator lol. I shouldn’t laugh, but I’m laughing. It’s kind of ironic. The Bluecoats are definitely one of my favorite corps, but like you alluded to, they have either led or participated in DCI trends that I don’t like. I don’t like heavy use of electronics. I don’t like ridiculous props. I hate the evolution of uniforms: corps either changing classic looks (Cadets/Cavaliers) or wearing morph suit WGI uniforms like the Bluecoats and others. But above all, I HATE singing and narration in Drum Corps, with few exceptions. The Cadets and Bluecoats have done this a lot, unfortunately. One of the Bluecoats shows was basically a damn concert and I absolutely hated it!

Amazing! You’ve captured the backwards spin wedge build at the end of the Mello solo perfectly, much better than the DCI broadcast. One of my favorite “my god” visual builds of any corps any year.

Take a good long look at this once great corps. Thanks to DCIs absurd system of judging and Scott Stewart's departure, today's corps is a shell of the Madison we all grew to love. What a shame.
