I've been a ham op for 50 years, so antennas are in my blood. These vid's are great. The only thing that baffles me is this "better than the last two antennas I tested" business. That seems like moving the goalposts after every touchdown. How about a simple table showing antenna models across the top, TV station and RF freqs down the side and maybe highlighting the antenna under test? Other than that these videos are great and I hope to cut the cord very soon. - WBØDVM
@bobh.45802 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything you said. The videos are great. The Antenna man video series is well done. To your comment "better than the last two antennas I tested" I agree and I'm sure Tyler could tell you hasn't got the time to do the Intensive testing like back-to-back tests on the same day. The only thing I can say is when you're comparing antennas you have to make sure the conditions are correct which means doing it on the same day preferably in the same span 15 minutes to a half an hour because RF signals can change. Very labor-intensive. I like to have both antennas ready to go and switch between the two rapidly Channel by Channel. Again, climbing up the roof or ladder and doing back-to-back tests can be tiring but its necessary to get a true understanding of how well one antenna performs against another. I've tested antennas one hour apart and have seen a huge difference on the same antenna, same aim etc.... Weather conditions seem to be the biggest factor.

I have a recording of an Emu's Broadcasting Company promo on YT (look up "2nd December 1979" and "BBC-1") The station break is particularly ominous. FWIW, that antenna seems pretty wide for a VHF-High-only antenna. I wonder if that is necessary because Aussie television has a unique channel 5A, which is just below the 2m amateur band!
@jayjaybar11883 жыл бұрын
On my experience, additional Log Periodic Dipole Array on VHF is not only adds gain for VHF reception, but it helps improve UHF reception as well. The shorter VHF elements which is designed for High VHF channels can pick up also UHF signals even on a reduce power, thus it added the signal strength with the signals received by the UHF Yagi antenna. Im using an all-Yagi antenna before, but I've changed to a combo Yagi-LPDA antenna because I'm considering FM reception, but the results gives even better.

You got to remember in the analog days, you didn't need that much power for VHF stations to cover a serviceable area. WBZ 4 came in just as good at 30KW, as channel 38 (WSBK) did at about 1MW. You didn't need power to reach if the frequency is low. You need the wattage to make up for the current draw to generate (much) higher frequencies. WBZ AM 1030 can be picked up well into Canada, and people told me it comes in good in Pennsylvania most of the time. At their 50KW of power, you can go far with a mere 1.03MHz signal, but only 50 miles out on channel 7 (multiple call letters, WNEV as I remembered as a kid).
@1L6E6VHF3 жыл бұрын
But it's not that simple. There are many different modes of radiowave propagation that can deliver a signal far past the horizon. On the AM broadcast band, a small station with a short tower, low power, a frequency near the top of the band, and poor soil conductivity, may have a signal only about 10 miles away before its signal becomes weak. A more powerful station (50kW), on excellent soil (e.g. CBK in Canada's Saskatchewan Province), covers nearly all of Saskatchewan day and night - an enormous area, as well as parts of Alberta and Ontario, North Dakota, Montana, and Minnesota. In fact, at night, skywave reception is found on the "clear channels" about nine nights out of ten (auroral conditions may cause blackouts of this "skip" reception). Shortwave radio signals can even be heard on the opposite side of the Earth, and the same signal may interfere with itself by "long path" signals from the opposite direction. Long distance television happens, but direct reception of television at great distances is far more rare (like less than 2% of the time). The usual modes on TV and FM radio are Tropospheric refraction and Sporadic-E skip (usually June in the Northern Hemisphere and December in the Southern).

Australia had channels well below US Channel 2. In fact, they even had a Channel "O", as well as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 5A (a very unusual channel just below the 2m amateur band). In general, Channel "0" (you would be outing yourself as a foreigner if you called it zero instead of "Oh") was commercial, 1 through 5 were ABC stations (the equivalent of the U.K. BBC or Canada's CBC), channels 7 and up were usually commercial. In the largest cities the channel was specific to its market. Seven, Nine and Ten (proper nouns) were locked to their synonymous networks.

Good review Tyler definitely considering this one if I'm willing to give up on my one VHF Low channel it looks a lot sturdier than most others available. I have a general question for you. With the FCC repack done now shouldn't antenna manufacturers be redesigning their antennas to best accommodate the new narrower assigned band width. It seems to me the benefits for them and consumers could be pretty big. The consumer should be able to get a smaller antenna optimized at the center of the needed range which would ease installation and improve performance. The manufactures would benefit from using less materials in construction and having a smaller package to ship. There are probably other benefits I haven't even thought of. Are you aware of any manufacturers working on or offering new designs? Maybe it would be worth waiting to see what comes out before purchasing anything now.

Your videos are GREAT. Thank you for doing this, since as you know - nobody else really is. One question - If you use one specific antenna, do you see much signal variation over a period of a day, or even a few days. I receive 120 channels with the antenna I have, but 3 of these seem to hop between 50%, and then fall into the 30's (and drop out) over a period of less than an hour. Is signal variation "usual", and to be expected?
@peters87583 жыл бұрын
UHF can be affected by foliage. If the weak or medium signal follows a straight line thru your neighbor's mighty chestnut tree, especially when the winds pick up, pray for insects and be glad there's nothing to watch in mid-summer anyway. When the new shows debut, those leaves will drop and your reception will improve. Or maybe your antenna's cable end is not secure or isn't very weatherproof, and the huge signal loss is at the connector way up where everybody who starts at the bottom ruins the job up top by just cutting the too long wire with a jacknife, jamming a cheap indoor connector into it, and covering the hack job with some black tape... (personally, I blame squirrels)
@stephenbay95643 жыл бұрын
Thanks for all that. So please let me just add a few things. For one, the connections appear solid. And if there was a connection issue, I don't think that just 3 of 120 channels would be going up-down, I think they all would, right? But they don't...just 3. Next is - what's really a twister, is that the 3 that do the up down, are coming from the same transmitting tower, as several other channels I'm getting, and these other ones are much more stable (for lack of a better term). These are from the Freedom Tower, in lower NYC, and I am in central NJ. What I started to think, was that perhaps there is some kind of multipath coming in, and causing this intermittent "disruption" of the channels. I'm at a point where I am considering moving the antenna to a new location, to see what effect that has. So then if I "conclude" something from your words, if there are no trees (foliage), and no multipath, one should expect to see a relatively constant signal strength. Sound about right?
@peters87583 жыл бұрын
Good, that narrows it down. Perhaps the worst channel on the Freedom Tower transmits at considerably lower power and/or is furthest from the top. ATSC is an all-or-nothing format. Weak signals are either good enough (except for a few artifacts) or garbage. Old NTSC (analog) signals just got snowier as they became weaker. That's why it was worth asking about the connector. It's easy to overlook a nasty end if the rest of the cable looks decent. Btw is the worst transmitter at the edge of the spectrum (RF 7, 14, or 36)? Sometimes there's interference on the out-of-band adjacent frequency.
@stephenbay95643 жыл бұрын
@@peters8758 Thanks again for all that. The channel giving the biggest problem is ION-TV, UHF channel 31, and CBS, UHF channel 36, which is coming from the same tower - comes in very strong. So the problem child is not a band edge issue (it seems). I have a digital tuner/converter box that displays signal strength (on demand - press info twice), and CBS on 36 reads "70", and ION on 31 reads "40-45", and often drops out. That's why I said this was very strange. At this point my only (practical) guess is multipath. And since the 2 channels I mention are at slightly different frequencies, the "adding, or subtracting" of a bounced signal, may be improving (or not affecting) one (CBS), and at the same time squashing the other (ION). BUT.....unless whatever is causing the multipath is "moving around", I cannot see why at certain times ION has the "45" number and looks solid, and then 10 minutes later I watch it drop below "39", and drop out.

In analog TV days I lived in Japan for a year and was surprised how Japanese homes generally got better TV reception over the air than US homes at that time even though they both had identical NTSC analog systems. there were 2 key differences in the Japanese home TV ecosystem then: 1) Japanese like to replace and upgrade appliances including TVs every few years and at that time most consumers bought electronics from a neighborhood appliance dealer/denkiya/ 電気屋, でんきや. These stores would deliver and install appliances including checking and repairing/replacing TV antennas as needed. I suspected that a lot of US home with outdoor antennas never had the antenna or cabling checked and that was a factor in poor reception. 2) Japan's equivalent of FCC presses TV broadcasters to colocate their broadcasting antennas. This had been considered in the US in the 50s and was strongly opposed by the networks. So in Tokyo, Tokyo Tower and now Tokyo Skytree are common towers for TV broadcasters. So one home antenna can get all stations well without a rotor. Turns out that with colocation, you can also create more TV stations in a community - something the networks certainly didn't want. Keep up the good work!
@haroldhechinger58503 жыл бұрын
We are starting to see that a bit here in the US. With the DTV conversion in Indianapolis, most of the stations moved to the NE side of the city. Before there were six different sites, now only two sites (NW Indy and Trafalgar) remain.

@joelongjr.51143 жыл бұрын
You won't be throwing this one to the floor! Unlike some of the other junk antennas you've reviewed. I also believe the FCC set the power levels artificially low to clear VHF high and low of television signals, so they could re-designate those frequencies for other services.
@jasong.60843 жыл бұрын
That's one possibility. Another is that since VHF frequencies can "bounce" more based on atmospheric conditions that the low power level is supposed to prevent adjacent markets with VHF stations from interfering with each other. Perhaps the power level restrictions were based on an older belief that more stations would be broadcasting on VHF. Regardless of the original reason, it certainly seems like the FCC should review the VHF power level restrictions based on current and emerging technologies, such as ATSC 3.0, and determine what changes can be permitted to help stations on VHF improve reception, especially since we're now limited to channels 2-36.

The end clamp has one advantage but it is unbalanced, unlike the big models from from Channel Master and Winegard although I was informed that it can be moved. It may be a good performer but the list price is high. You may do better by selecting a big Winegard model that is made in the U.S.A. Other Blue Sky models are allegedly made in America but Televes antennas are made in Spain. Channel Master is no longer made in the U.S. and their antennas are composed of components from “all over”. Tyler apparently forgot the big Stellar Labs VHF model had the highest gain of all the antennas he tested but that is because it is a VHF only antenna.
@gregpain85413 жыл бұрын
The end clamp can be moved easily. I've actually moved mine to be far better balanced, weight wise. It can also be set up easily to receive vertical transmissions, or DAB+ radio if need be. These are very popular here in Australia. Strongly constructed to withstand not only weather, but wretched sulphur crested cockatoos which are very destructive, especially when a flock of the buggers decide to land at the same time.

@@johnrecord4953 Yes, you’re right, thanks. When I called them last year and asked them where their stuff was made they said “from all over“. Certainly their electronic components indicate they are made in Asia and I suspect their antennas have metric fasteners.
