I use silk because I fashion the silk into dance flags. Also, there is a class of dyes only available for silk that are fluorescent, making the silks very bright in daylight and black light.

Awesome! Just getting started with this art using the Tulip kit - not happy w/results - dingy and faded ... purchased some ash that I'm going to use w/the remaining bottles of dye - should that work ok, I think I'll purchase the Procion(sp?) starter kit ... it's the beginning of fall in my area and the temps are beginning to drop and will shortly be less than 70 in the daytime - I've read that the dyes work best when it's 70 degrees or more -- your thoughts on this?

Mr. Don Baker... You Made Me so Happy ! This is the most gorgeous tie dye Mandala I have ever seen!! I have 3 questions x Ü. ... 1-Do I have to wet the silk before applying the color 2- What kind of thread did you use to tied the silk 3-Where can I get the dye
@DonBakerSilks10 жыл бұрын
Silk dyeing is different than cotton dyeing. I use powdered acid dyes for silk dissolved in vinegar. Steaming the silk causes the dyes to set to the silk. I tied the silk with artificial sinew available at Dharma trading. A note on the dyes - I use fluorescent dyes so they are very bright and glow in black light. They are listed in the "About" section of my website along with suppliers.
@DonBakerSilks10 жыл бұрын
I dye the silk when it is dry. I could wet the silk, but that gives a more diffused look to the colors and patterns.

In the very beginning, when you are ironing, the cloth is already folded. Is it folded in half once, or is in half from the side and from the top already before you actually begin the example folding?
@Phaeirheehee6 жыл бұрын
Bonnie Andrade Sparks the first two folds are hamburger and hotdog (back from elementary school) to make it into fourths then do the triangle stuff he did.
@brittanyfabian90107 жыл бұрын
I have a hard time with the fold! After you've drawn the line and you're trying to fold along and around it to make that fabric scrunch and stay on line... I'm going to give it another shot though because this just looks too beautiful

A skirt, a wrap, wall hanging etc. About two yards dyed and steamed $80. Completely UV reactive. don@DonBakerSilks.com. DonBakerSilks.com Available for custom tie-dyes and painted silks as well. Have a look at my galleries for a small selection of prior work. www.donbakersilks.com/News.php. Thanks for your interest and nice comments.

+Camila Mariano heat helps set most dyes
@kittimcconnell26338 жыл бұрын
Don Baker heat helps with the cotton set too. I let my tie dye projects sit in my car for a day or two in hot weather.
@DonBakerSilks8 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I thought as long as they were above 70 F they would set well. Are you saying higher temp sets the dyes better?
@torpedo99sosa307 жыл бұрын
Higher heat helps with procion dyes on natural fibers. I dye cotton and bamboo and always let them heat batch in the sun (inside a plastic trash bag) for 24-48 hours to get really vibrant colors. Procion dyes are highly chemical and if you use your microwave to heat-set them you can't use it for food again, or so I've been told. I have considered getting a second microwave for dying purposes because when you microwave you save so much time heat batching!
@azariabiegler76677 жыл бұрын

I am not familiar with that tie. I did have a look at it, and I suggest that you fold it in half and draw your design with something washable. Remember, you can use clamps, safety pins or even sewing to make your resist lines.
