DIY Tie Dye a 60 60 60 Flag Fold on a shirt [Long Tutorial] #30

Howdy, this is Daniel with Roslyn Rags. In this video I take a 100% cotton shirt, and fold an equilateral pattern into the shirt. The shirt has been soaked in a soda ash solution and is slightly damp.

When you have dye in your bottles if you don't use it all how long does it stay good in the bottles? Does that make sense? What's the shelf life On the dye?

Rea Tee Random. The rubber bands are holding the shirt in place. The folds create the pattern.

Could you explain how you began the initial triangle folding part? I tried following along and I keep coming out with more of a 45 - 45 - 90

If you are doing several pieces in one batch, do you have a good way to keep track of what you planned on doing with each piece? If I have shirts of different sizes wanting different designs I am having difficulty making sure I 'make' the right shirt for the right person.

hannahbananas194 Normally your rubberbands will have enough stretch to allow you to "open" up the piece a little to see how far the dye has penetrated. It is a careful balance that you can't completely control. Have fun!

Can this be done with a long sleeve shirt? If so how would I fold the sleeves?

Lauren DeLaO I would probably just fold the sleeves with the shirt, try and make your initial folds the same width as the sleeve. or the sleeve the same width as the main part of the shirt folded in thirds.

salemdog100 Yes, the shirt is damp. Dry can be hit or miss, not sure of all the variables, however freshness of soda ash plays a part.

Normally I leave them a little wet, depending on the design.

Hello! How important is it to soak the shirts before dying?

Very important. for this dye to react to the fabric, it has to have soda ash with it. You could add the soda ash to the dye, but then you have to use the dye within a couple hours.

Single Dad Sew tulip kits do include soda ash premixed in the bottles. any "one step" or "just add water" kit is basically the same in that aspect. I'd still buy soda ash separate and do a presoak regardless.

How long is the dye usable after it is mixed - before it touches any soda ash?

Andrew Orwin depends on what type of dye you're using. if you're using a "professional" dye, it'll stay good for at least a week or so after mixing, longer if you keep it refrigerated. if you're using a kit from the store, it has soda ash mixed in which means it will only be usable for the next 12-24 hours.

Yes it is inside out. I find more even dyeing results, and less possible back-dyeing in the washout when I fold them inside out.
