Sky News host Andrew Bolt has fact-checked a “bizarre” statement from Indigenous Australians Minister Linda Burney about cordial in an attempt to sell the Voice to Parliament.
“Yesterday Burney did go off script, just briefly, to try to push people’s emotional buttons to support the Voice and made this extraordinary claim to explain why we needed the Voice written into our constitution,” he said.
Ms Burney claimed in parliament when questioned about the Voice that she had been to communities where babies are “drinking sweet cordial” instead of water because it’s “cheaper”.
“I fact-checked - a litre of cordial at Aldi, for instance, on special at a discount store ... is just over $2, but Woolies is meanwhile selling 10 litres of bottled water for just $6.40; that works out to 64 cents a litre, less than a third of the price of discount cordial,” M Bolt said.
“So, I’m calling bull on Burney’s argument.”
