Freedom of speech is imperative...it protects the rights of all. Would you accept an alternative that curtails freedom of speech and religion if the UK decided not to protect the freedom of speech and religion of all muslims....or christians or jews or sikhs or hindus (depending on the reader)? This wasnt an interview, this felt like more of an interogation the way the interviewer was more focused on mawlana shahid ali. But Alhamdulilah the Mawlana handled himself very well. Also that other guy lied about the protests, didnt go down like that, i was there and they were definitely peaceful protests. The people of the UK should be quite capable of seeing a film with a particular perspective and understanding it is just a particular perspective. Make a film showing an alternative perspective! There are many films, books and plays, and paintings that depict different views of history, but they dont cause this kind of aggressive protest. Have a civil conversation in which both parties accept a different viewpoint exists, and then focus on what is held in common. The Pope, The Queen and the Archbishop of Canterbury manage it just fine although they disagree on quite a lot they also agree on quite a lot too! If Shia and Sunni both follow the teaching of Mohammed like Christians all follow the teaching of Christ, then the rest of it needn't cause a problem, you just get on with your own thing, be civil and that's the end of it.

The chap in Bradford talks about those who know little about Islam somehow getting the wrong impression of it. Well, I think those of us who previously had little knowledge of Islam have learnt an awful lot about it in the last 20 years and not from 'inaccurate' movies, but from real life, and the more we find out about it, the more we distrust it's motives and abhor it's methods. Your bad publicity is your own doing, it's not movies about the faith that put people against you, it's the intolerant and sometimes murderous real-life activities of your more vociferous adherents. Try sorting out the radicals in your midst and making as much noise about the murder of innocents at pop concerts as you do about this movie and you might garner more sympathy from the people of the country you have made your home in.
