So many people saying that such a long flight will never work. Well, it already works for Qantas with their Perth to London flights consistently achieving above 90% load factor.

Incorrect. The A350 competes directly with the 777-X which is still a number of years late and yet to be delivered. The 787 competes with the A330 family of aircraft.
@smeary102 ай бұрын
@@mattl4802 no it doesn’t. The largest 787, the 787-10 has a max pax capacity of 344 and a max range of 12,000kms. The smallest, the A350-900 has a max pax capacity of 440 and a max range of 15,500kms. Not even in the same ballpark.

And it’s not actually competing with anyone at present as the 777X is now delayed 5 years until 2025. They’re losing orders by the day.

@@smeary10 What you're saying is completely incorrect. The 787-10 has a capacity of 344 in a two class configuration. That 440 count for the -900 is in a max-pax config. Airlines like Singapore and Qatar have between 250-300 seats in their -900s. Do some better research instead of taking the first numbers you see after a search.

Fleet-renewal should be continual in any well-run airline. Qantas's problem is not the fleet; it's the highly-variable customer-experience - and I don't think an accountant will fix that anytime soon. P.S. Europe to Australia? I'd want to do an overnight stop on the way.

I am a bit confused, they talk about the Sunrise project and Airbus, and they show only the 787 Dreamliner…. 😅
@RudyKeane2 ай бұрын
There are multiple reasons for that. Firstly, Qantas currently has the 787 in their fleet, meaning there is more available footage of it. Secondly, it is the plane Qantas is currently using to fly from Perth to LHR, CDG, FCO etc. When Qantas takes delivery of the A350, it will be used to fly to Europe from the east coast.

Now I don’t mind long haul flights I’ve done DFW-SYD loads, and AKL-DXB, but I really don’t think I could bear doing another 5-6 hours on top of those… I like my stop over in the likes of Singapore for example, I’m a travel agent and people like the stopover so I really do wonder how it will be received… but good on QF for giving it a good crack! 😊
The only thing that will make a Project Sunrise flight bearable in any class is if Qantas relinquish control of the window shades & allow their fare paying passengers the chance to marvel at the world outside & below.

21 hours is crazy - how can that be ok from a health perspective? who in their right mind would want to be jammed into an economy seat for that long?? I can see the financial benefits to the carriers though - lower fuel costs, lower landing/terminal costs & less landing/TO cycles on the aircraft. this was always about improving margins.
@EyeInTheSkypaulmcmenamin2 ай бұрын
Regarding fuel costs, it is more expensive to fully fuel the aircraft and fly that distance. The heavy the aircraft payload the more fuel burn is required to keep it at speed. The landing fees saved will be sucked up by taking longer to fully fuel the same aircraft at its destination and turn it around. Also the number of pilots and flight crew is nearly double a regular aircrafts compliment since they take shifts. The whole point of this, is really a huge PR stunt is all, which depending on how the public react to sitting on an aircraft for 21 hours at a time will ultimately decide if the service is maintained or the aircraft rerouted to more regular midway stops.
@johnlacey1552 ай бұрын
@EyeInTheSkypaulmcmenamin I understand what you're saying re the aircraft needing to be fully fuelled from the start, and that any extra weight carries a penalty. This is especially true when flying in the 'coffin corner' as all such flights do. Wouldn't it still be very interesting though to see what their models look like in terms of comparison, given that each additional take off and climb also imposes quite a significant burden on the total fuel 'budget'? Also flying direct might allow a much more optimal route to be taken in terms of total distance? Most of these long haul flights already need two crews, so instead of just one of the crews having an additional 'shift', both crews would? The cynic in me finds it hard to believe that QF would do anything unnecessary that affects margins, but I certainly take your points. Perhaps their commercial model is where they get their break-even, based on expectation of taking business away from competitors? I agree also that the whole thing is a massive PR stunt - and I think also that if any of their major competitors start to get serious about lifting customer experience in their economy segment, it could leave QF looking like the great big cattle truck that they're aiming for. And with the focus on luxury amenities some of the owners of these carriers are making in the various enormous new transit hubs, who wouldn't want to stop there? This is exactly what those (government) owners want? Even as an economy traveller, it's possible now to get into a level of facilities that previously were not available. Maybe that's what this is really all about, given that QF isn't in this bracket of airlines? Personally, I think QF could be playing a risky game. There is nothing to stop some of those hubs jacking up fees in cases where they aren't happy?

The cost to carry just the fuel from NY/LHR to Sydney will make these tickets substantially more expensive than a one-stop flight. Unless you are flying business class, I can't see this plane being profitable for Quantas. SIN-NY is an 18 hour flight that just transports business and premium economy. The lighting, food, and other things are meaningless if you are stuck in a small economy seat.
