I've taught English in other countries before, and this video highlights a lot of why I like teaching. Experiencing new cultures and being willing to learn is pretty awesome. I'll answer about teaching English in Korea next month when I'm there!

Hi! I am applying to teach in Korea and your vids have been so helpful! But I did have a question. So I just submitted my application yesterday to Korean Horizons, my recruiter, and they have sent my app to EPIK the last time I've heard. I've picked Daegu as my first preference location, but I'm really wanting to change it to Seoul because aside from teaching, I really hope to get involved in community organizations and ministry groups that I find much more prevalent in Seoul. Would this hurt my chances of even getting in now if I tell them I want to change from Daegu to Seoul?

How about the requirements and processes in applying English teaching jobs in Korea?
@niccolom45564 жыл бұрын
All your videos are more Black-centric than Korean, and here you're promoting more "English language hegemony" in Korea like a typical tool for neocolonialism. Why don't you make a video about how oppressive American/Western presence and racist expats are towards Korea ever? Lol you're a self-centered hypocrite and barely Asian.

Last point is my favorite.. and it is not just about teaching in Korea.. it's general about life :) a quote goes like "life begins at the end of your comfort zone"! And Korea is a great place to come out of your comfort zone.. great video, Cedi! cheers :)

Very well stated Mika! I like that quote. And Korea will definitely push you out of the place of comfort but into a place of challenge and reward. Thanks for watching! :)

All great reasons. I came back to teach after doing an exchange program at Yonsei University in Seoul. I took pre-modern Korean history, Korean culture and the cultural wave, and East Asian Cinema. Through those classes as well as my time at language exchanges I just fell in love with the culture, language, and people. After graduating later that year, I had returned the next year with EPIK. Here I am~ 5 years after that study experience and I'm still loving Korea.

I taught English as a second language in China and it is by far the best thing I have ever done. It is an amazing experience if you go there with the right attitude and push yourself out of your comfort zone. You can learn so, so much and give so much back to your students. I made friendships with people that challenged me in the best ways and who I hope to be friends with for life.

This is an awesome video! Very motivating and encouraging! I’ve actually just finished my degree and completed an online TEFL course in preparation for teaching in Korea, but now that it’s come down to the crunch, I’m having second thoughts. Because I’m a bit shy, I’m scared I won’t be a good enough role model and teacher for the kids to want to continue to learn English and I’m worried that the work load may be too much for me. But hearing you say that your comfort zone is the killer has given me something to think about so thank you Cedric!

Loved this video! I’m still planning on coming to Korea just postponed it to this coming spring and would love to connect while I’m there and maybe do a video together :) I’m currently in a Korean language class here in Atlanta which has been exciting and I’m thankful that we have a large Korean community here so I can practice my Korean. Lastly I have been thinking of teaching English in Korea however I still need to finish my degree here in the states as I know you need one to teach English. So just curious what your tips would be on getting the ball rolling on that?
@skycedi6 жыл бұрын
Hey Shelly! Sweet, let's connect when you get here. I'm glad to hear that you are taking your Korean studies seriously :) How much longer until you get your degree? I would say as you are finishing it up, you can begin looking into different TESOL or TEFL certifications that meet the EPIK requirements (that is, if you want to teach in the public schools). The private academies sometimes doesn't require the teaching certificate, but it's always a plus if you have it. As of now, a 100-hr minimum course is required, and you can knock it out online! That way, you'll have the certificate by the time you have your degree ~ then you can apply for teaching positions.

Cedric, it would be an honor to connect with a fellow Halfie while I am in Korea :) And yes I have been dying to learn Hangul and finally decided to find a class and just see what happens... I am however finding the class pace to be a tad fast for me so I have downloaded a few different apps on my phone that have been helpful in my studies! Now as far as schooling goes I have a ways to go as I have just been working full time for awhile. I have honestly been inspired by your videos and channel on this whole self discovery journey which has also landed me where I am now with the desire to go back to school. School never came easy for me which is why I have always been hesitant to start back but I feel like now is a good time to conquer my fears and try for the best! I mean what do I really have to lose?!?!?!

Oh and fun fact in my Korean class part of our HW was to come up with a Korean name so with the help of my Korean friends my official Korean name is ㅁ니ㅏ :) I love the name because my Birth Mothers family name was “Mi” meaning beautiful so it just kind of fit and really makes me feel more connected to my Korean roots!
@skycedi6 жыл бұрын
That's very inspiring and I'm happy that you are taking those steps in learning the language, which will unlock more understanding of the culture. It will be challenging but you got this :) Many people don't know this, but I actually finished my undergrad in 2014 at 29 years old. And my main intention for going back to school to finish was so that I could be able to teach English in Korea (which didn't happen until this year haha). So i can totally relate to you! You can do this!

@skycedi6 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, EPIK is the only one like it. There's also a program called GEPIK which is very similar. Outside of these, there are many private institutes that hire directly.

I'm not a native speaker of English language but a teacher and a good speaker of it, can I still apply for that job?
@skycedi6 жыл бұрын
If you want to teach in the public schools through the EPIK program, they will hire teachers from 1 of 7 different countries. So if you hold a passport in one of those countries (and obviously can speak English), you can qualify. Teaching privately may be a bit more flexible sometimes depending on the private academy.

Just wanting to know is it for everyone how young and how old do you have to be?
@skycedi6 жыл бұрын
Speaking for EPIK, they can hire up to the age of 62. I've seen a few teachers in their 40s and early 50s in my Spring 2018 intake. I also met someone who was 21 from my intake as well. So as long as you meet the requirements, age shouldn't be an issue. Private academies probably won't hire beyond 62 as well.
