I inherited Dads Dual 1019 when he passed, along with the majority of his massive record collection. Great turntable, and I have to admit it is cool to play his records AND mine on the turntable I grew up listening to. Cool video man.

Dual 1019, it may not be the best one (for audiophiles) but I can not think of anything more addictive when it comes to turn tables. I got hooked so much I bought a second one and Dual 1009 for good measure.

Got a Dual 1019 with a purchase of a Barzilay stereo console. All the best of the stereo parts were gone, except for the two matching speakers with JBL internals. Looking forward to trying to resurrect that turntable. Love that it has four speed options.

I just bought my daughter a Fluance RT85. I came with a Orofon m2 blue cartridge. It is one of the best sounding turntables I have heard. At $500 it is a winner to me. She has it paired with the Cambridge EvoOne we picked up at Skylabs.

Dismantled it wrapped it up and put it in a suitcase and flew it with me back too Turkey 👍 Made it in one piece too 😁 Looking forward to reassemble it this week.. Kind regards from Turkey 👍

Congrats. I’m a proud owner of perfect TD-160 and 125. Only way to go with any sub-plattered Thorens. Go pick it up yourself or only pay after the seller has sent you detailed images and video of the packaging. Leave that platter on during shipping and it’s an ex turntable when it arrives.

Since the late 60s I've wanted a Dual turntable, but always bought something different because of salesmen's recommendations. Last year I found a well looked after Dual 704 direct drive turntable. It's manual start with auto lift at the end of the record which for me is just what I need. I have a Shure V15 Type III cartridge in it and I'm very happy with the combination. It's hard to beat the cool factor of a nice vintage turntable.

I decided on Pioneer fifteen years ago. First with a PL-12D, then a PL-12Dii followed by a PL-15Dii and now, more recently the PL-115D, which is my main turntable that I run with a Pioneer SX-650 receiver, a CT-F7272 cassette deck and a pair of KLH Model 33 speakers. I have three of the four turntables scattered throughout the house and I gave the PL-12D to my younger brother over in England.

The SL-B2 has a problem with cracking the drive gear for the return cam and any of the technics models that ran a T4P cartridge have problems with the hinge tab on the lids snapping off, making them useless, yes, all of those models will have the hinge problem.

The Technics SL series just after your table, are fantastic. This series of course began with the infamous SL1200. But the SL1300, SL1400, SL1500, SL1600, SL1700 are no slouches. The build quality is superb. The quality dropped off a bit on the SL1800, and SL1900. Technics went back to making new turntables in the last few years. And what are they making? New iterations of the SL1200!

They all run and sound excellent, very thankful when I play records, it's all about the music... Having tools you trust is priceless. Hi to everyone @ Skylabs, thanks for the content.

Big perk of buying vintage is meeting the seller! I just got my first vintage, technics sl-qd33 for $100. The thing is mint and the seller was so excited to show me it as well as the rest of his audio collection. We sat and listened to different records, tables, amps for about an hour. I’d say a seller is more important than what you’re buying. A true enthusiast keeps their things nice!

For a new turntable, I bought a Fluance RT82 about 2 years ago. Love it. No issues. The manual was clear and setup was straight forward. The auto-stop feature is great. Having the independently adjustable feet for leveling is nice too. Nice thing about Fluance is if I choose to upgrade to a higher model or better features, they supply all the parts to do it. There is no need to buy a whole different unit.

Great summary Kevin. I want people to like and enjoy vinyl as much as I do ! For me, I just like the old stuff and nothing else will do. Of the 20-some decks I have, my newest is a Onkyo from 1986, the oldest, a Garrard Lab 80. I like to tinker with them as much as I enjoy playing them. There are plenty of people I would encourage to compare say, a new Dual, AT, Teac, etc, make a choice then go home and enjoy the music.

The late nineties and early two thousands were an excellent time for recovering tossed out turntables. So my vintage tables were free. The thing is most were Technics direct drive turntables and most of them worked fine. Technics really flooded the market so there are many available at reasonable prices. Thst would be a good starting point for a vintage turntable. Just get one that is working as it did new . Such as a SL-D2 os SL-D3 and put a cartridge that tracks close to 2.0 grams and it will be fairly trouble free. If you decide to upgrade in due time the Technics will always serrve as a backup. These aren't mantainence free, but the regular maintenance is simple enough to learn and if needed a technician should be able to do so in a half hour. If you do go with a vintage turntable a good number of them have the "S" shaped tone arm . These have a relatively high mass . That's why I mentioned close to 2.0 grams of tracking force being ideal. because it is. If you try using the 1.0 gram tracking force high compliance cartridges with them it will give you trouble if the record isn't perfectly flat and perfectly centered...most records aren't. This is one of the main reasons the SL-1200 mkII is a DJ favorite. The cartridges they tend to use track in the 2.0 to 5.0 gram range and the elastomer is stiffer in the stylus so it can easily support the mass of the tone arm. It's not the heavy tracking force that wares out a record. Dirt is the primary culprit. A worn out stylus is next. Then mistracking due to to low of a tracking force is also a problem . That is an easy mistake to make. Just because a manufacturer lists a cartridge at 1.0 gram doesn't mean that is ideal for it . It may very well improve at 1.25 or even 1.5 grams. A well formulated vinyl record was designed to be played a hundred times with a ceramic cartridge equiped with sapphire conical stylus at five or more grams of tracking force. Those expensive high compliance cartridges do truly need an expensive low mass tone arm . The calibration tolerance is much more important too. It's not so much the tone arm is of poor quality ( because many are well made) , it's more about matching the cartridge to the tone arm for best overall performance. Any matching the cartridge is certainly a good subject to be covered in reference to this one. I really like Stanton 680/681 the moving iron design sounds wonderful and there is a stylus for them that will match nearly every tone arm perfectly.

I have a Thorens TD126 MKII with the Shure V15VxMR cartridge. Killer combo. Need replaced with the JICO. The tonearm height is difficult because of the auto stop and lift magnet which leave the sensor region. The hidden GEM I own is a Sony X600 Biotracer. Let me tell you, it's quite a step up from other vintage turntables. I also own a Dual 1219. Fun to watch and actually sounds decent. The TD126 I own was bought 20 years ago with the original box and contents. Never to leave my hands.

For years I had a Kenwood KD-500/KD-550 and Technics SL1300 as well as a Marantz & Akai turntable. All were either semi-automatic or fully automatic turntables. All of them were excellent performers. Recently I bought a brand-new Audio Technica AT-LP2x automatic turntable. I'm 68 now and really appreciate the automation - more so as I'm recovering from cancer. I've learnt to acknowledge I'm not that steady anymore so auto turntables are a real blessing. Besides I've always liked the convenience - and truth to tell I've always been a little lazy 😁

I started getting into turntables about a month ago. I own 3 right now. bought a Thorens TD 280 Mk2 on marketplace, a Hitachi PS48, which I completely serviced and recapped and just today I picked up a "universum f 2095" which is a Fully automatic quarz locked Micro Seiki turntable sold under the "Universum" brand which was a huge mail order store back in the 70s up until the late 2000s. I'm really happy with them and if you are handy it's quite simple to service and repair them. Most of them have service manual online, which you don't have for modern tunrtables anymore so if something breaks after your warranty period you are most likely better of just buying a new one these days if you own an entry level turntable, which is quite wasteful. And like you have said - old turntables have charme that new ones simply don't have. All of them look the same just look at the Pro-Ject, Argon Audio, Sony PS-LX310 etc. they are simply a piece of MDF with a platter and tonearm on them. No charme at all

You just can't beat the cool factor of a vintage turntable. The couterweights, strobe light, pot adjustments etc. I got a Realistec Lab 400 based on your earlier video. Had to replace the motor as it was a little slow and it wasn't an issue with the pot, but was able to get a bunch of internal parts for cheap along with a replacement motor on eBay. Great topic that deserves being covered many times over as years go by. I myself started on the best buy special Sony TT, then inherited my dads Hitatchi HT-454. In that case the Vintage put the newer Sony to shame. Since then Ive picked up a JVC QL-A5, and a Technics SL BD-22 from 88 that came with a TOTL ADC T4P cart. Every single unit I own all operate flawlessly. I dont really see much downside to going vintage if the piece is in mostly good shape.

I have 2 JVC QL-50s manual DDs. One needs work (runaway speed), the other in daily service. But I am extremely harsh on them in my archiving music because every album gets a wet play treatment, so this explains why the first one needs servicing now. But they have both been great workhorses through the last 25 years. Using a Grado gold cart and needle....the best sound for the money imo.

When taking a new turntable out of the box, also take photos or a video of how everything comes out. Photos are better because you can print them and toss them into the box. It's nice to have when you want to box it up 8-10 years later. The only used turntable I'd be tempted to buy now would be a 70's era Thorens - just to have a Thorens to spin records on.

I said this in your last turntable piece, but I got a new fully automatic Dual CS529w, splurging for the w which means walnut. I'm very happy with it, and have started a new custom of playing an LP every Sunday. Some are new artists, some from what's left of my original 60' and 70's collection, some are re-mastered vinyl like Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark, and right now I'm working through a Reader's Digest "Great Bands" collection that a fellow musician gave away a couple years ago. The walunt is handsome and I love the visually quiet design. I'm also a little smug because I bought an Onkyo receiver probably 8 years ago with a phono input that I vowed I'd get to use someday. I'm loving the experience. The Dual sounds great and has operated flawlessly. If I had a larger home than my two-bedroom apartment, I'd get another turntable, a vintage one. Probably from the FixMyDual guy. Thanks for another great video!

Vintage turntables definitely have a cool factor. I'm in the process of rebuilding a Rek-O-Kut N33-H turntable with an Ortofon ESL S1000 tonearm for myself. This restoration project & the little tweaks I make will make this turntable mine & make it special to me. I also own a Yamaha YP-701 & a Kenwood KD-770D. Both are unique & are special in different ways.

Pro-Ject offers its Automat 1 and Automat 2 turntables that are fully automatic. Not cheap, but very good. Dual offers three automatics: the CS329, CS429 and CS529. Finally, Andover Audio has the automatic SpinDeck Max.

I have been gradually moving up in vintage TTs. I Started with a Philips and then I got a Dual CS-522 that I worked on and had serviced. It still works great. I was planning to get a Dual 1229, but they just got too crazy expensive for me. I ended up buying a Sony PS X6 in excellent condition from a guy who works on and refurbishes Sony TTs. It is rock solid and I am really happy with it. I still have the Dual for backup or can hook up to my second receiver. I might sell it if I do not use it though. The Sony lacks the wood base but still has a cool look.

Again, definitely a fun one and very informative. Definitely agree with just about everything you have said (as you did discuss it in those past posts as well). I would like to say that an excellent all rounder for new and seasoned vinyl owners alike would be the time honored Technics SL-1200mkii or it's bretheren. Granted this turntable has the distinguished honor of being classified as a commercial turntable as DJ's, clubs and radio stations use them. The reason for that is the fact that the turntable is built like a tank. Repairing commercial audio, I can say that, with the exception of a couple parts, the SL-1200mkii rarely has a breakdown to the point where you need to dump a chunk of change into it and fix it. The two biggest problems that I have encountered with the turntable is the patch cord going back, and the arm rest breaking. The latter is very easy to replace, but replacing the patch cord does require some work. Outside of that, the quartz lock direct drive is very solid and rarely develops problems. Sometimes, the solder connections on the FG coil goes bad and it just needs to be resoldered. Now, the downside to the SL-1200MKii is that the price will run all over the place depending on the condition. I have seen some go for as low as $350 and some really nices ones fetch a bit more than $1000. Definitely not a cheap turntable, but once gone through and set up properly, it will give the average home user a lifetime (or more) of play. I am sure there are more turntables that share the long reliability of the Technics SL-1200mkii, but working with commercial turntables from other manufacturers such as Numark, Gemini and Audio Technica. The SL-1200mkii usually surpasses them in build quality and longevity. Other than the price, are there any more downsides to the SL-1200mkii? Not many, but a big one is that it is a manual turntable. So, you are going to have to be near the turntable when the record ends, otherwise the platter will just keep spinning with the tone arm on it. If you need a semi-automatic or fully automatic turntable, I still would consider sticking with Technics. Many of the direct drive models due share a similar motor design to the SL-1200MKII and they are generally very reliable as well. You just will not get the same wow and flutter and isolation performance as you would the 1200. But perhaps, you may not need it.

😊 No matter what, I would always go Vintage ! But have to say I'm now looking in to repairing stuff myself as the real problem for me in the UK is finding a trustworthy person to do the repairs if you are not able to. Thats a real problem 🙄 Not too sure that the younger collector will have the patience to deal with a Vintage. Oh god, the idea of sending a turntable in the mail 😳 Interesting topic. Best ✌😉

Back around 1980 my grandpa had replaced his Garrard turntable with a Toshiba SR FX70. I always loved it because the look was similar to Technics at the time, except the Toshiba has a digital display for the speed. Looks more sophisticated to me. Around 1990 he gave it to me along with his Altec 911A “music center” and Altec Model Nine speakers and an Optonica cassette deck. I still have the whole setup but I am planning on getting the Toshiba going again along with a nearly new Pickering XV-15 1200e that I only used one time. My dad gave me the Pickering years ago. He somehow had the will power to never use it because he had 625e that he already loved the sound of. I Wouldn’t even think of buying a new turntable because it would cost thousands to get equivalent quality, and it still wouldn’t have the same vibe.

I learned to prefer vintage because I like a fully automatic mechanism. It seems all the mid-high end tables made now are all the most bare bones design possible with zero extra features. I don't need the extra "connection" people get with a turntable by operating it manually. I already have that connection because I'm the one who tore it apart on the kitchen table, repaired it, re-lubricated everything and reassembled it.

I have nothing against new turntables at all, I've casually looked at some online. No problem. I've considered buying at least one more vintage turntable also, and looked at what's available in my area. But I have a Pioneer PL-10 bare bones, fully manual turntable that came free with an SX-434 receiver and speakers a long, long time ago. I replaced the belt once, and recently I gave it a full servicing myself - new belt, clean/lubricate the spindle, new cartridge. In its simplicity that's all there is. I also have two 1960's stereo consoles and each one has a Voice of Music 1200-series 4 speed fully automatic record changer, a magnificent mechanical design built like the USS Iowa. So I ask myself what more do I need and the only answer so far is nothing. (There's a complete PL-10 with all original accessories for sale in my area for $70, maybe a backup?)

I had been thinking about buying new equipment across the board but went with vintage because I already owned a Sansui SR222 turntable and Marantz 2220B receiver which I had bought in 1977 and kept in storage for over 30 years. I had collected a lot of vinyl until about 1983-4 when I switched to CDs. But my Marantz receiver still works great (I will be refurbishing after Xmas) so that sealed the deal. New CD player and speakers and I was back in business. But I didn't know what to do with my vinyl collection. But after replacing the drive belt and turntable mat (totally disintegrated) , and upgrading the cartridge, it was better than ever. So I started listening to my vinyl to sort them out. Most of them are still in mint condition as were many of the sleeves. But which would I keep? I only care about those I plan to listen to regardless of condition. So I sorted into keepers, to be sold, and "what was I thinking?" piles. I was surprised how many really good albums I had, especially jazz and classical. I'll probably keep 125-150 of them, sell the ones I'll never listen to again and destroy the "what was I thinking?" pile before anyone finds it. I really don't know if I would have done better buying new and I really don't care about automatic turntables. What I have may not be audiophile quality my upgrades in cartridge and speakers make it much better than when I bought it. All I have to do now is refurbish the receiver and the kit cost only about $120. And the entire package looks brand new. The re-lamped Marantz has no scratches, dents and polished up nicely. I'm keeping it all.

I have the Dual 701 and love it. I've been soured against Audio Technica ever since I bought a set of headphones for my son. The wired plug in completely fell apart, an outrageous charge for repair or replacement. Found a knock off replacement on amazon which has lasted years.I'm never buying anything ever again from them. That Empire is a work of art.

A vintage turntable better be right for me, cause it's all I have. I inherited it from my Dad who bought it new in 1978. It's a MCS 6601 Direct Drive turntable built by Technics for JCPenney. When I thought I might not be able to get it running after a long slumber I went looking around and lo and behold; I can't find a new one with all the features this 46 yr old turntable has. WTH is up with that? I love my MCS and with a new cartridge and headshell and careful setup it works just like new. Even the little plastic clip on the tonearm rest and the hinge tabs on the dust cover are intact.

VTG turntables for the WIN. I have had several: Pioneer, Thorens, Technics, Dual, Sony and Gerrard. My favorite is Pioneer. I do like automation, as a minimum auto return. I've sold most of the tables that have passed through my hands. In the end, I continue to find vintage tables with the features I want at a much lower price than any of the new ones. My favorite right now is my Pioneer PL-560. I got lucky finding it at a thrift store at a silly low price. Fully automatic, and still everything works (it did need new cartridge and new feet). My second Pioneer is a PL-514, decent table, but not to the 560 level for sure.

I'd really hope you'd reconsider shipping NEW gear so that I can send you new kids wanting gear. I don't want to send them to the big box stores, because frankly, big box stores suck. Please consider selling via your online store and shipping new gear like turntables only. I want to support you and send folks to you because you guys are awesome.... I've never physically been to your store, but I know you guys are awesome, legit and bitchin guys. I've heard it from my friends I sent there (Ben, John and Greg and Chad). You guys rock.

You keep doing this to me! Saw the Empire and had to click! One of my sons is using my 398. He's using a Rega arm on it right now I think. Another son was using a Philips 312 until he recently went new Rega. My current daily driver is an ERA MK6 w/ Linn Basik Plus arm. Replaced a heavily moded HK T20. But my collection includes a B&O, a couple Philips and a Demon 3000 drive/platter only that I need to make a plinth for and mount my JH Formula 4 arm on. I would suggest the thing to most worry about in vintage turntables is bearing wear. Especially platter bearings! Direct drives tend to use heavier platters that wear out the thrust bearing. Belt drives tend to pull the platter to one side wearing that side of the inner platter bearing. And of course tonearm bearings just getting gunked up.

I have taken the cam out and cleaned it. Reinstalled it still does it. Thoughts, ideas? On the issue. Thank You, Mike
