Those Bangs, were pretty cool! The Utahs need a Proper Cross-over, would change the whole deal up! Also Turntables are a Definite must, hard to believe people don't like to see them! Alo Cool Cassette decks would be a good one. Keep em Rollin Kevin

Best control knob removal tool I have used... a spoon. The curve provides perfect leverage, yet being hemispherical it will not damage a radio / stereo faceplate.

The Technics SA-5270 was my very first receiver I purchased as a 16 yo back in '77. I still have one today. The SA-5X70 were out in '77. The 5270 and above used discreate transistor outputs. The 5170 and 5070 used tdk modules. Back then, the Technics were less expensive then Pioneer. I also liked the sound better. More natural. I felt more like Yamaha sound. Where as back then the Pioneer had a more boosted bottom end. I had it paired with a set of Marantz HD440 bookshelf speakers. They rocked. I now have it paired with a set of Phase Tech Euro 335 ES bookshelf speakers. They also are great little speakers. Finally, a Technics SL-1500 turntable. After 3 years, I got rid of it all for separates.

Waaay back in the early 80s someone gave me the same Masterwork receiver you reviewed here. I installed it in the restaurant I worked at so the staff would have something to listen to. Many years later I visited the restaurant and the receiver was still there chugging along. Amazing.

Great post, Kevin. Oh boy, those Utahs brought back memories. I built 2 sets of speakers in the early 1970's that had the same configuration as those Utahs. I bought Olson Electronic's speakers from the local store and made my own cabinets from 3/4 plywood. They were ported with a 6" horn, 4" and 12" drivers that look almost exactly like the Utah's. I didn't know about crossovers then so their quality of sound, although great to my young ears, was probably just OK to mediocre compared to commercially built speakers. I eventually bought Dynaco A25's and quit the speaker building phase of my audio journey.

I have a Techics SA 5200A I purchased new in 1975. I recently re-lamped it, unstuck a button and cleaned the pots. It's similar to the one you featured but the previous generation. It has a silver face but blue lettering on black background with a metal bottom. It's been in nearly continuous use since I bought it. It's currently powering vintage infinity bookshelf speakers in my garage. I use a Bluetooth D/A converter plugged up to the Tape 1 input as a source (I know, sacrilege). My neighbors hate me.

Showing some love for Technics receivers! I’ve owned an SA 400 for 30+ years. My kid took it to college and somewhere along the line blew the stk packs. Anyway it sat on the shelf for years and cleaning the basement, I had a pitch or fix decision. It was my daily driver for many years so I couldn’t bring myself to pitch. Stereo Rehab in Chicago did a full restoration. It now drives a set of JBL L82 Classics in my basement system and sounds fantastic. Yea the build cut corners, and the stk packs are a pain but I agree on the value prop. They also look cool.

I just watched your video and had to share. I have a set of Utah Modal AS-2AX Speakers that were my dads back in the day. They have an 8" Woofer and 3-1/2" tweeter and were rated at 12 watts. I always liked how nice the cabinets were on them. I think he had them hooked to a Soundesign receiver that sat in the area between our Livingroom and dining room. We always had the radio playing when us kids were home by ourselves. When he passed I took the speakers and did exactly what you said, I put new drivers and crossovers in them, and they sound very nice now. My son is currently using them hooked to a Pioneer SA-6500 amplifier with a Denon CD player connected. As you said, they were very nicely made cabinets just had poor quality components. Not anymore and they live on to entertain. Now, I just need some new drivers for my JBL L-40s!

My brother-in-law bought the linear tracking B&O turntable and had nothing but problems. I however, bought two of their radial tracking models and they got me through the 80's. I thought they were brilliantly designed and got me to the point where I could afford a Rega. Most of my friends said: "you have to use those tables with B&O gear". Not so. Worked great with an NAD integrated. Now I will express my opinions on vintage turntables. Some of them were beautiful, when they were new. But they have been used for years and as Lou Hamilton is quick to point out from Audible Elegance, they suffer from worn bearings both at the spindle area and bearings in the tonearm assembly. Remember, these are mechanical devices and just like an automobile, moving parts are subject to wear.

Interesting you mention the small Masterwork / CBS receiver being suitable for a bedroom. Out of more than a hundred vintage receivers here, there is a similar sized "Electrophonic" R-12 in the bedroom for years, which also being circa 1970 has never been serviced in any way. Also only 5 to 10 watts /CH, but has an excellent sounding AM tuner, with decent bass and no harsh noise. AM just sounds really good using this little receiver. AM ?? Yes, there are six music stations here on AM, including a 1930s to 1980s mix station on 740, a 1930s to 2000s commercial free station on 1220, and a new "superhits of the 70s and 80s" commercial free station on 1150. Great to fall asleep to commercial free music... and wake up to it.

Lots of times I look on EBay just to see if some of what you showcase is available. This Masterwork M-4800 receiver is currently available from a few sellers for less than $100. I bet that little receiver would be a fine garage music receiver to change your oil, anti-freeze and transmission fluids by. A receiver to create quality noise while you are working on a hobby. Hope you and your family had a blast during the holidays. Every time you create one of these videos you do something my brother and I find hilarious. This time you very politely savaged those UTAH Speakers. My brother heard that exact UTAH speaker model saying the woofers sound like they're made of plywood, the tweeters sound like balsa wood. LOL!

About the Utah speakers and the extremely simple crossover, I bought a pair of Altec Lansing Santana 879 speakers for 200. The crossover was a single 14uf cap between the bi-flex woofer and the tweeter. You could tell that with the cabinet Altec put some work into them along with the insulation layout. I lightly sanded them, stained them with mahogany stain and 3 coats of boiled linseed oil (hand rubbing the excess off) and the cabinets are beautiful. Put in a 2 way crossover with better grade internal wire and banana post connectors, with woofer and tweeter both fused and a nice sound and great looking speakers. On the Utahs if you are willing to work on them with proper sound insulating material with a better crossover and test if you need to replace the drivers one could have a great sounding and great looking speaker.

Back in my college days, we used pine boards and big concrete bricks for our shelves. The bricks definitely brought a good foundation for the turntable. On another note, I worked in retail for a while after college and one building where I worked, if someone walked across a particular place on the second floor, a shelf in our department would jump about two feet. It's due to the flexibility built into the structure to withstand varying dynamic loads. My guess is that if you moved your turntable to a different location, you wouldn't have a problem - try figuring out where there's a beam in the floor and locating it over that. As far as the Utah speaker having insulation on two sides, my guess is that it was to reduce standing wave reflections inside the speaker. Having it on all four sides would do better, but it might have absorbed too much sound that way, dampening the sound excessively?

My Denon DP-400 turntable has auto stop. Like you, I'm going to drop the tone arm myself. I cut the volume down to avoid the pop and crackle of the lead-in grooves. Once the music starts I sit down with my adult sip of choice and focus on listening only. I typically have the lights very low for visual sensory deprivation. I occasionally relax a little too much and nod off. Then it's 'Thank You, auto stop '! When the tone arm hits the lock groove it lifts after five revs and the table stops. A little peace of mind knowing my boozey snooze won't result in an hour of needless stylus wear.....

The Utah speakers have insulation on one side and bottom because of where the port is located, upper right hand side of the baffle board !, it was to prevent over damping of the ported enclosure! K @@skylabsaudiothat was the theory. I'm pretty sure there was a section in a book I had on speaker building that I used in the mid seventies when I built my first speakers. An eight inch two way with a 3×7 horn tweeter. The box was very sturdy and inert. I had some nice 7 ply architectural oak plywood boards from a local manufacturer that my father did sales for. Then they were covered with some prefinished vinyl with real walnut venier exterior. In my youth I decided that the port should be horn shaped too. So it got a large 8×3 inch slot at the bottom that tapered to a much smaller opening inside. They had good sensitivity.... a good thing since my Voice of Music 🎶 single ended heater (yeah the heater plate was connected directly to 120 volts) tube amp had about one good watt of output. The second watt was a bit of cushion for headroom. A little Realistic phono preamp was added. So I could use the Sure M-75 ecs cartridge in my entry level BIC turntable. Played Steppenwolf's Magic Carpet Ride and Don't step on the Grass Sam so many times ....thank you Mom for not sending that selection of Columbia's record of the month club back.

Like those Utah cabs project, I'm doing some Altec 891a mini monitor IIs sealed walnut boxes missing drivers, but with 1600 hz 2way crossover intact and passed to me. So far its a Dayton rs 12 inch woofer fitted and reproduction phenolic cone tweeter snow delayed delivery. The walnut veneer is rich and veneered front and partially on the inside, even.

While I have a few pairs of vintage speakers I ran across a set of bookshelf GEMS a couple months ago, CURTIS MATHES AS640. Made in JAPAN with heavy wood cabinets

On the second set of speakers. If I found some nice speaker set like those, I would gut the and put different guts. I did that to a set I bought at the swap meet for $6.00, in the early 80's.. Replaced the woofers, tweeters, and mid ranges. Then added 3 way cross overs. I put all Pyle guts. I have always loved them and still play them. I love the turntable segments.

I can’t find it now but there is some JBL literature from the 1960’s that recommended putting insulation on opposite walls and leaving half of the walls alone.

It was a thing .... the idea was that itt would prevent standing waves inside the box. This was also supposed to load the port better i.e. louder by not deadening the sound wave inside as much.

I've not had those B&O speakers, but I want to hear some Pentas! The only issue I have with B&O gear, in general, are their unique connectors on the gear, turntable cartridges, etc..

My father purchased a CBS Masterworks All in one Quad system. The main reason was that he got an employee discount. He was a recording engineer at CBS records on 16th Ave in Nashville. That thing sounded pretty rough. I think the four speakers that came with it were made by Utah! I believe it had an integrated record and 8 track player. I was shocked to see that they actually made a receiver.

I have a pennecrest receiver at home from the 60's only like 15w per channel and very crude internals. But with a little set of bookshelf speakers it sounds pretty good and has never been serviced.

Thanks for another informative and entertaining review. Personally, I prefer no automation in my turntables, not even auto-stop. After my Dual 1218 and subsequent Phillips 312 acted up after just a few years of ownership, I'd had it with automation, however minimal. That's one reason I've stuck with my Thorens TD166 mk2 for going on 40 years. If the Thorens ever died, I'd get another fully manual table, belt drive or direct, I'm not sure.

In 1984 i was after a pair of speakers to replace the Telefunken L.645 speakers i purchased in 1969, which sounded like the Quad ELS speakers at the time.. I ended up buying a pair of Rogers Studio 1 Loudspeakers which were being demonstrated in one of the Hi Fi stores in Sydney. The sound they produced was remarkable . The amplifier driving them was a Pioneer SM 83 Tube Integrated Stereo Amplifier. As i already owned a high quality amp, i had no need to buy the Pioneer. BIG mistake. The Pioneer SM 83 was the reason the speakers sounded so good in the shop.

You can put 3rd party spring feet on any turntable to fix the hum and sensitivity to walking, etc.. You should stock some.

In 2017 I picked up a T40 on ebay, and a year later a T60, which was the last turntable I had in 1986, before giving it away to go CD only. I made a few mods to the T40 and T60, best of all moving the DC power transformer outsde the plinths. This further isolated electronic noise and made them almost dead quiet, but then I lined the plinths and platters inside with NOICO, which is a sound treatment used in car sound systems, and deadened them more from physical issues. Consider the related specs at the time were already very good. I'm not a fan of any other features on any turntable, and disconnected the auto-lift and power on/off inside mine. I earlier had gone from ARxa to Pioneer PL41, and then to the early SL1200, and finally (I thought) to the T60 in 1986, and still prefer doing it all myself. Less 'features' also means fewer things to cause problems. The HK disc stabilizers are heavy and I use them, however the marks for using with a strobe are so small as to be useless, and you have to provide the strobe. I use a LP-size disc for speed adjustments. I use my T40 and T60 with one-each Schiit MANI preamp and Nagoka MP110 cartridge. These combinations sound great and look nice, but as with other turntables of that time you need to be willing to learn a bit about how to get the best from them - no big deal, really, but more than a lot of people expect and are willing to bother with. Thanks!

Hmmm I'd definitely recommend listening to B&Os before buying. I remember a set my friend had when they were new (part of the whole BO system, as you indicated). I remember not liking them. I also remembering that you couldn't rock out on them as they ran out of steam pretty quickly. To each their own, I guess. I suspect, for the "typical" B&O customer, they are just fine as they are likely going to be background music systems or other lite-use. The system I listened to would have been in the 1979-1980 era. I'd say that the receiver was the Beomaster 1900 so that was the level of equipment they would have had surrounding it. So, probably the S35 or S45 speakers. On speakers...insulation is about tuning, not cost, so much. They probably determined that they got a flatter response going with the box half covered rather than fully covered. If it cut their insulation costs in half, so much the better. Oh...and no problem on turntable videos. It's ALL good.

My parents gave me my first stereo when I was like 13 years old. It had a Concord receiver, Utah speakers & a BSR turntable. I agree, the Utah speakers had beautiful cabinets but could not match the sound quality of comparable Advent’s or AR’s.

That Masterworks reminds me of my very first job in HiFi sales. Yes exactly as you say, stereo consoles deconstructed into "separates". I worked in a department store (Treasure Island) that had a company owned TV/ Appliance department that sold those, Electrovox, Panasonic, ... consoles and separates along with vacs and stoves. I was in a leased space department right next to it (owned by RECCO and then the Heilicher Bros) and we sold HK, Sony, Pioneer, Dual, Empire, Wharfedale, ... Even had a small sound room. Customer's would wander back and forth and get attacked by different salespeople as the walked across the isle. They sold some real cheap ... with outrageous specs. 150Watts IPP (Instantaneous Peak Power) with maybe a 3watt output. Flip over needles,... Perhaps today's iPhone/ Bluetooth market?

B&O always used the best driver manufacturers for their speaker designs (Seas, Peerless, Phillips etc) for any given time frame through the years. Their designs were often 10 years ahead of their time. The first time you remove the grilles from a pair of S75's you realize they weren't screwing around. Sadly not all of their Beomaster units sounded good with all of their Beovox offerings unless you kept in the family time window of which there were many (for the person making an initial purchase, this was ensured by the dealer). A properly functioning Beosystem 8000 with the MS 150 speakers sounds insane - sadly few complete working systems are still in existence and keeping them functional (to spec) is a nightmare. The people who could afford them new often didn't appreciate what they had - I inherited my uncle's system and he could not have cared less.

I am surprised people don’t like videos on turntables. I enjoy them as much as the speakers and the receivers.I am guessing once someone finds “the turntable” for them that it’s the speakers and receivers that get swapped around more often.

I have speakers from Grundig model professional2500 In a configuration similar to the b&o with two bass speakers and unlike these, their filter is made for a very good and quality , also a very high-quality case, but the main thing is the sound, it is very neutral, you can listen for hours Without fatigue, I highly recommend it!!
