Note: you can cosplay Spy at any convention, just have to make a paper mask that matches it, seen multiple pics of spys at furry cons with just the standered Spy outfit and a wolf paper mask, want to go to a Starwars con, Yoda paper mask, Comic con, Spiderman paper mask and go do the pointing meme with other Spiderman, skys the limit really.

One of my favorite parts of cosplaying is working with an incomplete costume then putting the excuse into the cosplay. One of my shining moments was a spy cosplay where I wasn't able to find a balaclava that worked with the outfit, but I did (at the time) have an exceedingly impressive stack of tophats in my room. Thus on the day of the convention I created a Towering Pillar of Hats, and when anyone asked why I was missing my mask I simply explained that I traded it for the impressive stack of hats. It seemed like a good trade at the time.

I really like how you stressed that the outfits are more important than body type: I’m already quite lanky, so I’m a natural fit for Scout (who I have cosplayed) but my first big costume for a con was Engineer and tonnes of people recognised me! I was also surprised by how smoothly it came together, since, like you said, components are fairly easy to find. It encouraged me to try something more ambitious for my second big cosplay (The Monarch from The Venture Bros), which I had a BLAST putting together!

My very first cosplay ever as the Spy last year as seen in this picture 11:57 . Dozens of people recognize my costume and take pictures with me. It was a pleasant surprise knowing that TF2 is somewhat popular in Malaysia, at least in the PC gaming community that I know of. The anime convention I went to was crowded but fun, too bad I couldn't find any TF2 group to take pictures together though (Found them on Instagram & Twitter after the event). I've seen at least two Spy cosplayers but they were too far for me to reach out. Before that, it was a pain looking for an authentic dark blue suit with stripes and spent almost two weeks visiting almost a dozen of thrift stores and almost considered looking for a simple dark blue suit with no stripes instead. It was a blessing to find a full set that fits me and got it at a cheap price. I remember my aunt thought I was going to work or something when I picked my cousins up to go to the anime convention together while dressing it. Love the video, Skymin. For the next event, I will definitely go as Spy again with more masks to carry.

I recently started working on a soldier cosplay for a convention, as well as halloween events. Looking at tf2 cosplay videos online has given me inspiration, as well as making me excited to go to my first con. That said, this video just came out at the perfect time, and I'm glad that it shows how people and a great youtuber still care about tf2 cosplay. also, I totally share the anguish when seeing scout cosplays with long ass sleeves. He has long sleeves in the comics, but they are still not as long as the average shirt, so, yeah.

12:30 I've done a lot of research on potential coats for Soldier over the past few days because I plan to cosplay him. I've looked through overcoats, button-up shirts, and BDU tops, but none of them seemed to match 100%, or if they did they were too expensive. But after some extensive digging, I've found that COLORED LAB COATS exist in both Red and Blue online for generally cheap from medical supply stores. Most of what I found was on eBay from a seller named "Medical and Workwear Distribution". As long as you get a lab coat that buttons up with a NOTCHED collar, you have yourself a pretty convincing Soldier coat that's ALSO lightweight and can be worn a little more comfortably to summer conventions!

I remember one of the Con passed in St. Petersburg. My friend and I went to it not knowing what to expect (this is the first time we have been to such an event). But we saw a lot of cosplayers there, with whom we really wanted to take a photo. And then we saw Scout running with a baseball bat across the street area. We wanted to take a picture and two more cosplayers were there (Medic and Pyro). After a couple of hours, we saw how they walked in a group, and there were no longer 3 people, but almost all 9. They were kind and even agreed to take a photo with famous poses. As it turned out, there are usually more people, but not everyone came that day

love this video. im a medic main and have been planning my medic cosplay for a long time. I've done a few cosplays in the past, and you really succinctly explained why medic is the hardest. An accurate coat DOES NOT EXIST on a store rack. I'm planning on entering cosplay contest, and for sure I have to make a coat, because it's biggest part of medic beside his medigun. his pants are also a rare shade of brown/burgundy. anyway, it's a large undertaking. I'm going to look for white double breasted trench coats, which I can cut up and remove one column of buttons, to better match medic's unique coat. If I can't find one, I'm gonna buy a sewing trench pattern/guide and make a custom medic coat.

Nice video! I can definitely agree with your point on TF2 cosplay being beginner friendly. I only have 2 years of cosplay experience, but my first was The Soldier and I had a lot of fun putting it together. I even made replicas of the Black Box and Battalion’s Backup to go with it.

My school has this annual cosplay event and since TF2 isn't that popular in the Philippines, it was rare to see someone cosplaying as them. But just this year, I fanboyed so hard when I saw a guy cosplay as Spy and he had a disguise mask with the face of Furina from Genshin Impact.

Imagine going to a convention and someone's pulls up in a cardboard box. It's the greatest idea ever! It's cheap, easy, portable and highly recognizable. The cardboard box truly is the most versatile tool ever made. not just boxes but cardboard itself is a great building material for cosplay. Is there anything a cardboard box can't do?

I first made a casual BLU Medic cosplay (which was all just bought articles of clothing/accessories), then finally made it into his regular outfit this year by making a Bonesaw and his backpack props. Also earlier this year for PAX East had made a Woolen Warmer hat by hand, was perfect for the day I went cause it was cold out. I wish I was any good at sewing or I would have made his labcoat from scratch, even bought all the materials for it but sadly no skill so I had to buy a blue labcoat online and attach the class emblem patches to the sleeves. And for gloves I found blue rubber dish gloves. Cheap and not the most comfortable but it all worked out for the most part. I can definitely say that the Bonesaw was very difficult and the backpack was the most difficult and at my beginner level of prop making, it came out alright but still a bit sloppy and amateur looking. I hope someday my cosplay skills improve enough that I can make better quality and better looking upgrades to my BLU Medic cosplay. I still have many plans including making cosmetics.

About the "role playing tf2 ocs" part: In a way, every cosmetic loadout is an oc I have a pyro that is a spider in weather-proof clothing that likes skillfull consistency, and one that is a big daddy from bioshock, which is usually equipped with easier to use, close range weapons. I have a sniper dressed in fancy clothing using fullstock and an awp or heatmaker, and one dressed entirely in crocodile stuff who uses the full piss loadout I have a battle-heavy, a cloaker heavy, a heavy dressed as scout, and you can guess which weapon slot they mostly use. And in a way, each of these loadouts is a character I play with my playstyle. Each loadout has a character, and is therefore kind of an OC of mine.

I remember my first tf2 cosplay, I was an Anger sniper and I carried around a jarate (filled with apple juice!!) that I would take a swig from infront of people!! Thank you for your videos Skymin, i've been a fan for many years.

This definitely got me inspired to revamp my old scout cosplay! I've had ALOT of fun at valve gatherings, and especially during the tf2 part of it we always used to do emotes or heck even just doing the conga! Such an amazing community and made me feel so welcomed 🥰

My very first cosplay was the Medic, which in retrospect was fantastic because it falls within an almost entirely unique niche: - it's iconic, a LOT of people know TF2, and it's easily recognisable - it has a unique (potentially one-sided) interaction, namely people shouting MEDIC! from across time and space when they see you. The feeling of reward without the pressure of interaction when very new to the hobby of cosplay made this such a good started costume. Also taught myself sewing and foam crafting in this project, and pretty fast too since I'm a chronic procrastinator lmao. It's been years since that costume, I still have it somewhere, maybe I'll revisit it some day, pick it apart, make it more form-fitting, upgrade the props and pieces... --- edit: to add to what Skymin mentions about the Medic costume being hot, I can confirm. I made my coat out of faux leather to emulate the thick vibe and texture of the model, and the event I wore it to was outdoors, lasted several days, and was right in the middle of a heatwave. It's frankly a miracle I didn't pass out. ...it's a bigger miracle that the costumes I would subsequently wear to the event in later years would all hermetically seal me in even more, with little to no skin showing whatsoever. Ohh cruel fate, why are all the coolest characters so heavily dressed from head to toe.

Amazing video. I actually had done the TF2 mercs in the past, first soldier who was entirely made from stuff I had at home and a prop helmet and cigar, and medic, who I had mostly followed the same method, except I had to buy glasses and a lab coat, and I had also made a med pack and painted my face to look like the second opinion.

Another boon of the variety of cosmetics is that depending on weather or climate, you can use different pieces of clothing. For example, if you’re Scout and it’s cold where you are, you could wear one of the cosmetics that’s a jacket, like the Big Mann on Campus

Quite a few years ago, I went to a convention dressed as a team recruiter, looking to sign people up for BLU. I had all blue clothing, sunglasses, backpack, watch, clipboard, pens, and even the paper I was using to sign people up was blue. I also had a giant, blue flyswatter as a melee weapon. I also had a red set for a friend of mine. I got matching pairs of everything I could find in red and blue. Same pants, shoes, backpack, clipboard, watch etc. I even had the official RED and BLU hats and scarves. It was fun.

as a Pyro cosplayer myself (which you probably saw in the replies to your submissions tweet! though i was late 🥲) i can confirm everything said in this video. ALL of the items i used are just from around the house and local stores (and amazon). even the MASK was from an outdoors store, but it did NOT come cheap. *it was worth it though because it's really cool and shockingly accurate!* (it's a Mira Safety CM-7M for anyone curious) also, i can confirm that the suit itself is as hot as pyro's flamethrower (and in the case of mine with tinted lenses, i can barely see anything), and also that you are SO recognizable in _at least_ relatively accurate TF2 costumes. i went to a local, relatively small costume party thing recently in my pyro outfit, and i met a couple people that were so psyched to see me! one was like "i like you" when he saw me, then i pulled up my fire hatchet and he said "OH YOU'RE THE PYRO!", and then he asked me to pose so he could take a picture, and i did. then i met another cool dude that instantly recognized the outfit and shook my hand and said "heavy main". he took a selfie with me later on, and we've since stayed in touch over discord. that day brought me much joy, just for being positively recognized. anyway, the amount of happiness you will experience as a TF2 cosplayer is immeasurable. i HIGHLY recommend it if anyone reading this is considering it!

I think another thing is that for ppl that are worried about embarassment about size and not matching the cosplay character, tf2 has body sizes for everyone. Like, as a fat guy I could cosplay Heavy or engie just fine, but if i wanted to be goofy I could try fat scout since thats a really common meme outfit for heavy anyway. I dont think any regular person a con would care about your body type matching anyway because that's honestly really rude, but like I know ppl have anxiety about that because I do lmao.

Spy was my first ever cosplay! Back in the early 2010s I went to Ikkicon in Austin and had the full getup, despite being around 16 years old. I had a full blu suit, balaclava, fancy watch, and a plastic conniver’s kunai! It was a great introduction to cosplay.

An interesting addition to the most difficult tf2 cosplay: Saxton Hale. To make this cosplay, you need to: be pumped up like a buffalo, cut or glue fake hair in the shape of an Australia, and also grow or glue a mustache. The essence of mercenary cosplay is in the costumes, and Saxton Hale's is in the body. PS: I managed to find only one photo with a very authentic cosplay in quick access :(

I'm pretty good at the costume part, not so much the role-playing part, but I haven't really tried very much. I'm pretty much an introvert. I do love 3D printing weapons though, I've made a Frontier Justice and a Shortstop so far. Anyways, those are some excellent costumes!
