Two characters who are very similar in gameplay, but one has been consistently hated while the other one has been loved. Why?

I think a "dichotomous" character like Medic will always be more interesting than a straightforward one like Mercy. Even her name is so blatantly "I am good healing person." I feel like this is because we, as dichotomous human beings ourselves, find contradictory characters much more relatable. However, this isn't to say that ALL characters need to be gritty or psycho to be liked. I think it could've been as simple as, as you even suggested, making her past less than squeaky clean. Like perhaps she's so adamant on peace and doing no harm because she used to be violent, or she was exposed to great violence. Something like that to give her character more of a foundation for why she's so goody goody.

There is a reason as to why she's adamant in healing and that's because her parents, who were both doctors, were killed in a war. That would have been fine, but it leaves a lot to be desired. She's just one of several other goody-good characters in the roster, and that prevents her from standing out. Btw, on the topic of her name, her real name is also very on-the-nose: *Angela* Ziegler. Amusingly, Medic's real name, Ludwig, means "famous in battle", very fitting for his proclivity to violence and just emphasizes the contrast of his character and chosen profession.

I would have liked it if Mercy had a (more obvious) fixation with defying death. Like with resurrecting Genji with the cyborg body, resurrecting fallen heroes in battle and extending her own youthful looks/life. Reaper could have been an interesting example of her questionable experiments. Trying too keep everybody alive at all cost, but not wondering if it is more ethical to keep somebody alive beyond repair. She could have kept het guardian angel persona. But also give her a big personal flaw.

To be honest in the character department, it is very hard to compare for one simple reason: The target and feel of the characters. In OW, all the characters are designed like superhero comics characters, they all have on the surface an interesting story and are tremendously characterized by theyr appearence, but deep down, just the amount of characters there are and the little exposure you can give to the lore, makes them completely plain and predictable. We are very used to this kind of plain characters, and a lor of movies and shows suffer of it and fail because of it. They are usually not very fresh. On the other hand TF2 characters are all sociopathic mercenaries that go with a comedy tone. It is a very fresh feeling, they are not pretentious, they laugh at the idea of being deep or heroic, and overall, they are very funny. It is somewhat (even today) original finding that all the protagonists of the lore are a bunch of idiots, psychos, mercenaries or just simply mad (like the pyro), and the best thing is, even if the concept of such characters is not something new, they are usually designed to be edgy, but not in the case of TF2, were they are colorfull and hilarious.

MercenarianWolves TF2s characters also fit really well into the game itself. In overwatch, half these characters seem to detest killing because they're so pure of heart, but in TF2, the characters are enjoying the killing just as much as the player. It fits really well.

Doomfist, Reaper, Sombra, Widow, Moira, Roadhog, Junkrat, Bastion, Wrecking Ball, Zarya, Soldier, Ashe, Mcree, Rein, Genji, Hanzo, Ana, Pharah, Tracer, and Orisa are all soldiers or just downright socio/psychopaths. Save only a couple, none of them would hesitate to kill if they need to.

Personally, the comic book heroic theme of Overwatch is inspiring and fun. In game it may be a slaughter fest, but in most other situations its a symbol meant to inspire. TF2 was just meant to be mindless, hilarious slaughter. There is an appeal for both, but the inspiration you can get from Overwatch is still excellent, and as long as the game continues to flesh out its lore then I am quite okay with having some shallow character backgrounds.

Resolute I didn't say there weren't Overwatch characters that don't mind killing. But the TF2 characters actually LIKE doing it. They ENJOY it. And that makes it more fun for the player. They don't begrudgingly do it like half of the OW cast, and especially don't act hypocritically self-righteous like Mercy. Think about the concept of a class-based shooter. It's basically a purgatory of endless killing. It's absurd to put heroic characters in that world. There's a massive emotional disconnect. That's not to say OW's characters can't ve inspiring or whatever. They just don't fit the game they're in.

I totally agree that Medic has way more personality than Mercy. I don't play either game, but both are so popular that it's been impossible to avoid picking things up about them over time. So, what do I know about Medic? His personality, everything about what kind of person he is, can be found in a single video: "Meet the Medic." I'm not even considering anything fanmade for this, all of this was from one video. What is he doing? Joking with an awake patient whose entire chest cavity is open about _how he lost his medical license,_ shooing away a dove that he's lovingly named Archimedes after it lands in said open chest cavity (and caring more about Archimedes being dirty from that rather than his patient having a bird land in their insides), blowing up his patient's heart, having a living, talking head in his fridge, making his patient hold open their own ribcage, and on and on. When he enters the battlefield, he appears in beams of light accompanied by a choir, white doves fluttering out from behind him. Ah, a medic! A symbol of peace and healing! But it's completely ironic. A subversion of expectations. And that's why it's so funny! His segment ends with him again lit up by the sun, more white doves flying up from behind him, but he's standing on an entire mound of bodies that his experiment made happen. When he gets his "Meet the Team" closeup, he is smiling with maniacal glee, holding a bone saw. All of this is in a 4 minute video! 4 minutes, _jam-packed_ with character and entertainment. TF2 released in 2007, and there are still legions of fans of Medic to this day who like him so much they've produced endless amounts of fan content, ranging from artwork to videos to fics, and so much more. Hell, now, in 2023, there's been an entire-ass _movie_ made in SFM with him as a central character! Now, what do I know about Mercy? What have I picked up about her character, who she is over the years I've been here and there exposed to her like I have been with Medic? Well, she's nice... A good doctor, is passionate about her job... She's attractive... Some of the first stuff I saw about her was the clip you used a few times, where she's descending from the heavens, reaching out her hand, almost a literal angel. And it isn't ironic, like with Medic. She is genuinely good and wants to help people... ... And that's it. That's all I've learned about her. And most of the fan content about her that I've happened across is, uh, porn. Not much else.
