The exact figure is hard to come by but it's no secret that most of the farmland bought in the uk last years was bought by private non farming investors (have provided the source below) who then look to lease it out to farmers, profit from that and collect the tax benefits that go along with it. It's a tax loophole, actual landowning farmers shouldn't be as mad at the government as they should be at wealthy investors like Jeremy Clarkson/private investment companies for exploiting a scheme originally designed to help actual farmer, not help wealthy investors avoid tax. source: strutt and parker farming database, specifically regarding farmland purchases in 2023.

Inheritance tax only applies to roughly 4% of the population. According to the new rules, 462 farms in the UK will be subjected to 20% (not the full 40%) inheritance tax on any value above 1 million pounds ( not the whole value) However like the rest of the population there is no inheritance tax to be paid on the value of a property up to £325,000, bringing up the untaxed total to £1.325 million. If a farmer is married then his or her spouse would be able to pass on another £1.325 million tax free, taking the total of untaxed amount to £2.65 million pounds. An alternative way of looking at this is are the number of farms over 200 acres of land and because of the average land prices that would be enough to pay inheritance tax. Just to note the average football pitch it only 1.45 acres. This is wealth tax on assets for rich landowners who buy assets for tax avoidance. And let's not forget the government is giving British farmers a massive 5 billion in subsidiaries in the next 2 years, which the highest in history. I always find it ironic how the richest of society drape themselves in the British flag but are in fact the less patriotic as they don't want to pay taxes back into the country but hoard their wealth in asset accumulation or abroad offshore. There's a lot of manipulation going on and it looks like a few rich people are propagandising real farmers. If the farmers knew the truth that the vast majority doesn't fall under this new tax system then they'll only be a dozen rich tax dodgers outside parliament.

Us farmer's already pay our taxes along with feeding our country, The average UK farm is 200 acres, with land prices at on average 10k per acre that's £2m in just land alone without taking into account our farmhouse, farm buildings, machinery and livestock!! So if our business is £3m we should lose £600k in taxes 🤔 To pay for this we would have to sell 60 acres of land decreasing our workable land to produce food to 140 acres!! Makes total business and productive sense 🤔
