I did not just pull that figure out of nowhere. This thing runs off a Win XP or win 7 PC. you could essentially put any CPU you like in there. A Pentium II is adequate to do the job, but most likely they upgrade them just as you would your own home PC. Not much point putting in a top of the line i7 in there though, its overkill.

Actually these are mostly very simple calculations, majority of balistic computers work with CPUs with up to... 800Mhz or so. One of the most famous artillery fire control systems (for howtizers) is running on Pentium III with cca 650Mhz. (Yes an actual Pentium III). And yes it is currently fielded, its not something from 15 years ago.

there you have it, in this video there was never any mention of the mantis, it's about skyshield. And it's not like mantis replaced skyshield, it is just an specified version for base defence developed for the german army, incorporating the skyshield system. but skyshield is a fully autonomous system, and used as such on naval vessels for example.

With antiradiationmissle, they mean a missle like the AGM-88 HARM. They are used against any kind of Radartransmitter. Radarwaves are also a sort of radiation like gammawaves. Radarwaves just have a much higher wavelength.

@stalkingalizee The skyshield radar unit can detect and track alot. The gun can only destroy 1 target at the time but it's very fast. When there should be a mortar attack and they shoot 30 mortars after eachother then the skyshiels would have no problem with that 2x15. But the Aster30 will 1 the objects are to small, 2 Aster30 has 3x8 launchers= 24, 3 it can only fire 16 missiles in a short time because the aster also works with 1 radar unit and 4 the high cost.

It's a 35mm round my mistake. The skyshield doesn't have to use both guns to shoot a object down. It's a CIWS like the goalkeeper or phalanx. There's also a navy version like the skyshield the oerlikon millenium 35. I also think it holds more ammo but iam not sure. The navy version has 250 airburst rounds. And the controle system can handle 3 guns or 2 guns with one short range missile launcher.

I'd say most likely. Considering the fact that Oerlikon supplied us with the 20mm gun in WWII(Heck, that was the US Navy's main close in weapon at the time) I wouldn't doubt that the US Military has this in their AA arsenal. We've been a long time customer to them anyways.

@stalkingalizee The skyshield and the SAMP T or not designed for the same task. The military bases has to be protected against all threats. Threats from the air and threats from the ground. Skyshield is made for the last one SAMP T for the first one. Aster 30 covers a large range but cant take out small threats like mortars it's more for larger objects. And also taking out a 600€ mortar fired from 8km away with a 800.000€ missile and a 120km range!?

as far as i know they don't but they run extensive tests on it. might be a question of pricing. As german/swiss weapon systems tend to be queit pricey (high production costs).

The video made the product looks like "Ultimate Anti-Air defense system that no one cant match". But of course it's a promotional video to attract military officials. I think this system is just an upgraded AA system we had back in 2 World Wars. This one have computer assisted usage and the old boys still manual, where in other products we have missiles that far more easier and effective against air threat. Probably they still selling this to help countries that unable to have advanced AA system like Iron Dome, Israel ; THAAD, US that currently placed at South Korea, and other missle type AA system.

@stalkingalizee This is a very good system to counter attack small enemy projectiles. Also the radar is made for tracking small and fast objects. I know what you mean this system alone isnt good but with other systems it is. Aster 30 block 1 - 120km, Aster 30 block 2 +120km - ? = ballistic missiles,fighterjets,... NG crotale 15 km = cruise missiles,heli, UCAV's,... and the skyshield 4600m UAV's, mortars, artillery shells. that all together and you will have a VERY good anti air system. ;-)

@stalkingalizee You cant compare the Aster 30 to the skyshield. It's like comparing a assault rifle with a tank !? The Aster 30 is a missile system and the skyshield with 30mm rounds. The skyshield is used for protection against smaller threats like mortars,small UAV,105-155mm shells. You cant use the skyshield for long range air defense system and nobody does. And the SAMP-T is a shorad,medium,longe range air defense system using aster15 and aster30.

Not at all. Gatling systems are maybe more impressive to an average joe, but for any given size the multi-barrel system will use a smaller caliber. Larger caliber ammunition mean you have more range. That and the possibility of modern "smart" (Bofors 3P for ex.) ammunition that simply won't fit or be effective in a 20mm shell. Btw, the Centurion C-RAM is primarily aimed at shooting down mortar rounds and the like, not aircaft.

@stalkingalizee IR is defeated with flares and chaff this system uses IR/Radar and visual aids to detect and defeat the target. If it can take an incoming missile or Laser Guided Bomb from reaching the target it well pays for it self.

@stalkingalizee You need more then just a missile system to protect the air and troops. Long range, medium range and short range air defense systems are necessary. The skyshield isn't used for destroying airplanes but mortars and artillery shells. You say that it isn't cheap, the system isn't but bullets are. With a missile defense system the battery is cheap (launcher,...) but the rockets aren't. Taking a mortar down with a 800.000€ missile isn't cheap and very difficult.

Those tungsten pellets would be extremely dangerous against incoming jet powered aircraft - ingestion of a single tungsten pellet will destroy any jet engine. But then again even the most technologically sophisticated defence system can be overwhelmed numerically. BTW the US Falcon air-to-air missile test target that was used in the demonstration was one of the biggest military spending design failures that the Americans did it never achieved a single combat kill before being shelved so the Americans have lots of them surplus now to shoot at.

JuanMa Oliva not quite correct. it is not a licensed copy of skyshield. there is no skyshield anymore, due to the fact, that oerlikon was bought from rheinmetall. this means mantis is the enhanced new version of skyshield, now called in germany mantis. skyshield was purposed with a double-gun (earth-to-air), which will come with the twin-gun from the "gepard" in future for mantis. mantis is modular and capable to be networked with other units on earth, air or navy. mantis is the only "lightweight" system, which is capable to identify a submarines periscope. Which means the range-altitude of the system is below 0 m to 3500 m. The distance range should be in the same radius. mantis is able to recognize a coke-alu-can from a distance of 10km. greetz from germany
