Mvumsi Ayo Yes, he made a career out of cheating, and getting away with it. Referees almost afforded him the leniency because of who he was; the current NZ are no more obvious at their cheating, but they get penalised much more.

A brilliant demonstration of how McCaw was such a brilliant player. There's something so authoritative about New Zealanders explaining rugby. I really enjoy Jeff Wilson in this clip. As a player (a truly excellent one), he always seemed so serious and intense...and here, he's smiling and enjoying being part of this masterclass!

@dls1681

thats because pocock was no big threat. When Burger first came on the scene all kiwis were scared that he'd pick up the 7 positon to where Ritchie would get out played (even Ritchie himself). But as demonstrated in this video there werent many if any that were up to his level of mastery of the open flanker position

everyone who uses that McCaw is a cheat argument is a bloody sheep that just says what the next bloke says. He's just the most technically gifted player to play the game. Nor is he an outrageously dirty player like the majority of you think he s and its been proven that he is more often on the receiving end. Because he understands the game more in depth than most people he's automatically a cheater?! It just gives him a very obvious distinct advantage. something also to note is incredible core strength which is probably the key reason to why he's so good at what he does.

Everyone calling him a cheat! He’s just super clever and skilful enough to get away with it. His IQ for the game is crazy. Look at players in other sports like LeBron, Ronaldo, Brady… people say the exact same thing about them. How ironic that the greatest players in each code get labeled cheats. Are they actual cheaters tho? Or do they know the game / refs so well, that they know exactly how to get away with it? 🤔 Richie was renowned for studying every ref before the game, just to know how he refs. It’s even on his doco ‘Chasing Great’ Food for thought…

Feels heretic to question Richie's breakdown expertise, but where he discusses Pocock around 3:20, wouldn't it be better to hook his right arm under Pocock/Wilson's left shoulder? As well as giving him more leverage to shift the bloke, it might force him to lose his grip on the ball...

I see what you're getting at. But if he does as you suggest pocock has his legs, stomach and shoulders to brace against being shifted. Remember pocock is leaning forward so mostof his weight is concentrated at his shoulders. Where as the way mccaw explains it pocock has only his leg strength to stop the clean out and half his weight to shift.

This is exactly how I used to fustrate the so-called big boys I played against. In my country however, its my about size rather than actual strength and how u apply your head in using it with skills. Funny thing Im about Richie's size yet here in the Republic Im far too small, Heinrich Brussouw was too small for Heyneke, Aplon was too small, Many a boy far more talented than the guys you see in Super rugby were too small, even though they were just as strong. South Africa has plenty of guys who play to the ball and could match Richie in that department, yet we have these gate keepers who like tall pine trees for some reason. G Smith, Pocock, Warburton, Brussouw, Savea, Dusatouir and Sir Richie are my fav open siders since the turn of the mellenuim. Richie was def the most infuriating to watch poaching against my teams.
