According to Niki, he quit Brabham (with a record salary) without warning, because he’d lost his motivation. Bernie did not fire him. Bernie did agree he should go under the circumstances.

Niki did it without any warning whatsoever. He hadn't told anyone in the team before he walked. He told me as we walked done pitlane together immediately after he got out the car and asked me to tell Bernie & Herbie he'd quit. I was far too scared to tell Bernie, so I told Herbie who is a pussy cat. Niki meanwhile flew off in a copper ... I thought he'd caught a flight back to Europe that night, but maybe he saw them all the next day at the circuit. But he got in the car that afternoon as a Braham driver and got out a civilian.
