It is a shame Rafa was under the destructive hands of Hicks & Gillette for the latter half of his tenure. They forced him to sell arguably the best midfielder in the world (Alonso) because we needed the money. A lot of people blame Rafa for that sale which is a shame :(
@taliamason79865 жыл бұрын
@@Chicken_Dippers That sale was his fault. He literally went after Gareth Barry who played the same role as Xabi Alonso . Alonso rightly felt betrayed and disrespected by that and had every right to move to Real Madrid. In the end it was pointless because we ended up signing freaking Aqualani instead while the at the time newly cash injected Manchester City signed Barry. I love the man and respect his tenure as a whole at the club. But his obsession with a mid table level player over one that was far better in almost every aspect and achieved way more in his career was beyond ridiculous. It's no different to when SAF traded Jaap Stam for Juan Sebastian Veron for Manchester United.

@jermaine tobin it's fairly bold but like most of my opinions, it has it's base in everything I've read and the fact that modern football is light years ahead of the Shankly/Paisley era, in terms of tactics. It's no coincidence that so many players such as Carra, Torres, Xabi, Gerrard, Ayala, Mascherano etc have said he's the best tactical mind they've ever seen. The man has a encyclopedic knowledge and memory for detail that has astounded (and annoyed) many of his players. He was using analytics before it was really a part of football. His teams consistently perform beyond the sum of their parts due to his intelligence. There are newspaper articles from the guardian and independent that you should check out that go into great detail on his intelligence talking with former players/staff from Valencia right up to Chelsea. He isn't the warmest or the most emotionally intelligent but he's definitely the smartest!

Can't get my head around the fact that that game happened almost 15 years ago. I remember it so well. What a night. Just realized it was 15 years after our last league title and.........perhaps 15 years later we'll win our next league title??

when you look at the spreadsheet of both sides.. liverpool was full of average players only had 2 world class players in xabi alonso and steven gerrard and that milan team was full of world class players and legends in every single position... no champions league game can ever compare to this miracle comeback and will always be the greatest comeback and greatest champions league final in history... a true underdog story

Rafa seems to be a man with a lot of humility.... Jamie seemed to want to dramatize the whole event. Rafa seemed to speak down on the event as if to make the events seem more relatable.

What a pleasure seeing a manager and a player analysing a legendary match that they featured together in. From a neutral point of view at least, that was class. Would love to see more of similar!

This is one of the best interviews because it gives you great insight into what the manager and player were thinking & communicating at halftime and during the game (including during the penalties). It shows you what Rafa felt he missed during the 1st half tactically and what he needed to do to make things better. This was more about tactics for him and less about hoping to motivate and emotionally galvanize a possibly shellshocked club.
@OttawaRocks5 жыл бұрын
To add to my comment: Some managers have a single minded self belief about them - they transfer that emotion & belief to the players and the players rally and play better. Rafa is different. He already knows that he has a team full of character players (that he knowingly built into the system himself via signings & player development over months and years). So his job in that moment of the final was to tactically improve his team and hope for the best thereafter. As good fortune would have it, Liverpool delivered a fantastic win!

What amazes me is the comeback. That Milan team was one of the best or maybe the best in the world at that time. The way we came back in the 2nd half, the desire and will. We have that spirit again since 2018 I think. And he talked alot about character, we surely had that there and also now back again. Amazing how much that influences a game (and tactics too of course)
@cmac71655 жыл бұрын
Amazing watching this brings back the memories the lows my dad and me felt the first half , Milan played us off the park but the second half extra time penalties were amazing and a amazing memory to share with my dad. The best final ever and an example of why football is more than a game!

Winning the ECL was one of the greatest nights of my life. What he did at Valencia winning 2 league titles is next to impossible, but he did it on a fraction of the budget the 2 big guns have. Nice to see Rafa’s thoughts about that night. Dudek’s save from Shevchenko was one of the greatest saves ever.
