Pickford Trent Walker Stones Konsa Saka Rice Bellingham Palmer Kane Foden Obviously Trent will drift into midfield, Saka will be very high basically playing as a left winger so Foden can drift into central area’s. Much more balanced in my opinion.

@@alexbelotti1603 Well in this formation Foden will have much more freedom to stay central where he operates best and we will have width on both sides which has been our biggest issue in my opinion. Of course Gareth could just stick to the current formation and play Saka or Gordon on the left. Whatever he does he certainly has all of the tools at his disposal to win this tournament but it remains to be seen whether he can figure out how to get the best out of this very talented group of players.

I've been saying this from day one when Southgate didn't bring a fit left back. Bobby Robson was forced by injury to change to a back three in Italia 90 group stages and we got to the semi final. The result of the last game had nothing to do with tactical changes and everything to do with desperation and luck. And of course a bit of magic from Jude to top it off. One team tried to hang onto the lead and almost managed it. England spent too much time playing the ball back and to the side. Little in the way of attacking the goal for the most part until time was almost up and desperation forced them to do so. They have to stop the incessant passing and possession play and focus on and really attacking the goal. It's more of an attitude change rather than formation.

Gareth has shown he is no adventourous tactician, I really don't anticipate any changes in formation / personnel or gameplay and his argument will be these tactics got us this far blah blah blah. Unless the players get a grip of the situation and start deciding team tactics amongst themselves on the pitch I cant see anything other than a Swiss win. The talk is already about a favourable draw to the final instead of the game in hand, do not underestimate the Swiss Gareth, they are playing well above Englands level so far in this tournament.

Crying out for 3-5-2 and it will stop Kane from drifting back! Foden and Bellingham In front of Rice is a no-brainer for the middle, and there are loads of options for wingback rotation, including the untried Gomez, whose versatility saved Liverpool's season.

And how does Southgate change the patterns of play of sideways/backwards passing? Passing to the front 3 when the opposition defence are behind them and so failing to get behind them and balls into the box to create chances. Very well controlling the ball but it doesn’t get upfield fast enough and far too easy to defend against. Switzerland will be happy to play low block and hit England on the counter attack.

Defend or Attack? Back 4 or Back 3? It all well to want a packed midfield, with a more forward-running team, but if we leak goals like a sieve and don't take the chance we do get, what's it all for?
