The "Slam-Fire" is caused by the gun lacking a "disconnector". A safety feature that was made mandatory sometime after these models came out. I own both the Winchester 97 and 12 and this technique works much better with a proper stock anchored into the shoulder to prevent "Short-Stroking" of the pump motion.
@eclipsegst9419 Жыл бұрын
AFAIK It's not mandatory, everyone was just afraid the ATF was going to banhammer them so they preemptively all moved to having the disconnect. Also because of lawsuit concerns since that's around the time everything started becoming stupid-proof.
@lawrencemarocco8197 Жыл бұрын
The slam-fire technique from the Winchester Model 97 was very effective in the trenches of WWI. Led to the Germans wanted the weapon banned as "inhumane." Hypocrisy from the country that introduced poison gas to war.

@@eclipsegst9419 ummm, but ATF was founded in 1972. the last gun lacking a disconnector was in the 1940's or so. It was simply a safety issue the gun industry at the time deemed needed to happen.

If I remember correctly, didn't Germany try to ban the use of shotguns in war, claiming they were cruel and unusual? I seem to remember they did, because that 12 gauge was devastating in the trenches. The only shotguns I have ever shot were while I was active duty, but I didn't know that most pump-action shotguns are not capable of slam fire. They taught us shortly after 9/11 in one of the tactical shooting classes I was sent to that the shotguns we had were capable of it, and we all had to run a course with multiple stations, one of which was to mag dump (tube dump?) the 12 gauge. I don't remember which we were using at the time but the only shotguns we ever used at that point in time were the Mossberg 590 and the Remington 870 so it would have been one of those. At the time, I assumed that was just a pump-action thing but now I understand modern pump-action shotguns have a safety disconnect that prevents this.

@@RandomiusBronius not generally, the contents will take the path of least resistance out, which is through the hole in the can. The can itself doesn't explode internally, there's not enough oxygen for that to happen until the contents leave the can and come into contact with the flames, by which time most of the can is usually already expelled even if it wasn't pressurized until the round hit it. There should be minimal shrapnel risk so long as the cans aren't filled with an oxidizer of some kind already along with fuel, as THAT could easily detonate inside the can. More likely you'll just get a giant deflagration (fireball) rather than an in air detonation as well, paint generally isn't that explosive unless you're making the actual paint out of something like black aluminum powder

This was a particularly chaotic episode and I loved every second of it. I also thought the food stealing creature was a bit I thought it was the T rex or something

I have a 1940s Stevens 520 designed by John Browning, great guns and can slam fire. Having the shoulder stock helps with accuracy and cycling the action.

You would think that watching a grown man blasting huge jars of condiments at point-blank range with a 12 gauge shotgun would get old after a while...but no...never does.

My absolute favorite shotgun is the Winchester M1897 Trench-Gun. I do love the Ithaca M37 as well, Amazing video as always Scott.

Trench guns are going for crazy money these days

I’ve got myself an 1897 Winchester, gonna get it fitted with a kit so it has all the trench components, but it’s expensive to get it professionally done at $800

I have the 1897 with a 30" barrel great shotgun for hunting. Would never think of cutting it down to a trench gun. I would love to find one with the 20 " barrel someday.

I've got the Winchester 1897 circa 1931. Does just fine when I slam fire. Love the old firearms

Actually the pre-1965 Model 12 from Winchester can easily be made to function as a slam fire. They removed that feature after '65

I was just thinking the old Model 12s would fire like that.

the winchester model 25 also has the ability to slam fire, as its based off the winchester model 1912, later changed to model 12 or the M12, I have a model 25 I had found at a local gun store though I have yet to fire it myself

I recently found your channel and am loving the content. I even bought my first gun after watching a few of your videos. It’s a 20 gauge shotgun, break action I believe is what it’s called.

Very creative video. The raccoon was a brilliant touch. I agree with your conclusions on slam fire.

Love the Ithaca, the loading gate/ejection port combo was a great idea, less openings for crud to get in. Anyone who's been around on the internet long enough was probably introduced to it's slam fire feature from the video of the guy demonstrating it by blowing a hole in his ceiling 😅

We had slam fire shotguns back when I was a Florida State Trooper. Very Long time ago! Old Remingtons I believe! We were issued slugs and double 00 buckshot.
