Saul Williams needs to return to slam poetry. No one can bend reality with words like Williams can.

"Saturn's Rivers overflow with schools of frankincense and myrrh-maids: swimming scents of self to the soul and sphinxes, they swim in Saturn's rivers; drenching the waters with ancient magic and the secrets of the Saturn Sutra; secrets that could name the future and saturate the soul with stardust and samba of seasons untold. The future unfolds in Saturn's rivers, so i sailed my soul through the fore-thought of the forgotten and waded through windows of ohm." Insanely good!

I first this piece on Lyricist Lounge Vol 2. Opened my mind and writing to a new world. Perhaps I'm projecting my own memories onto it but I dig his writing during this era more than his new joints (Niggy/Volcanic). Seems more focused.

I also did, re-visiting this gem from one of my favorite compilation albums really gave a provocation of inspiration. His lines are so powerful and imaginative, I could easily see poets and the non-alike quote his words as a guide to the wisdom of thought.

There is a famous inscription on the statue of Michael Jordan in Chicago that reads: "The best there ever was. The best there ever will be." No one could ever be at fault for appropriating those words after witnessing Saul Williams in flight, either. Every bit as powerful as the first time I saw this years ago.

@4oldskool This deserves a reply: Poetry is concrete. The more concrete the better."And the silken, sad, uncertain/Rustling of each purple curtain" "So much depends/on the red wheelbarrow/glazed with rainwater/beside the white chickens" (from memory) "And the yellow fog that rubs its back along the windowpane" "My pony gives his harness bells a shake" "I have walked out in rain and back in rain/I have looked down the saddest city lane" See? Concrete imagery is what it's all about.

The best poetry is abstract? Who told you that? The best poetry is concrete. Good poetry gives you immediate images and emotions. It doesn't have to be easy, but it CAN'T be abstract. Abstraction needs prose, where you have time to go into the ramifications. Time is short in a poem. You can't waste it on big words and nebulous meanings. And you can't pretend any collection of words is poetry. That's the talk of someone who wants to call himself a poet without the skill or the years of study.

i stumbled on to this and started to wonder why folks are attacking @BarerMender, let him keep his opinion. YET, at the same time it would make sense Mr. Mender to show some writings/performances exalting your opinion. the only "right" in poetry is structure and intent, aka the use of literary devices to present an idea for folks to pull an emotion from. (and even that feels limited.) again,i suggest he show us his greatest. &, sir/ma'am don't be disrespectful, i am qualified to say all this
@BarerMender12 жыл бұрын
@scualabamafan "It's not even abstract as history repeats itself and we are all as humans rooted in what has been experienced once and what will be repeated again." What does that even mean? The essence of poetry is that it must be concrete. And for everyone that asked, I'm not publishing my poetry in the comments section of a KZbin video.

I can see where BarerMender MIGHT be coming from. I had a hard time with his beginning as well. The first 40 seconds do come across as a bunch of wordplay with no real meaning. There was a time when i would have judged him in that time frame & never let go of that judgement due to my ego. But as he went on, he dove into some fantastically deep material. I do like Rafael Casal's "ADD" which is very literal or even Shane Koyzcan who has a great blend of the two. But they are all great : )

@scualabamafan "Poetry has predetermined boundaries." I don't know what you're trying to say, and I'm not sure you do either. I grant you, you have to do certain things to have poetry. It has to be rhythmic, for instance. But boundaries? What does that mean?

@mrnye66 and you're an authority on what poetry is? This isn't too abstract actually, so whoever said that is wrong. But good Poetry should (apparently) deal with things in the physical world and the 5 senses. That's why God gave us metaphors. I think Saul manages to concritise all his abstracts though
