Greta discussion! I can totally understand both sides of the argument. I do appreciate that there should be at least some arenas in the sport Jui jitsu world where slams are legal to prevent the sport from becoming watered down. With that said I would never support slams being legal in an IBJJF tournament or for any one that isn't at least a purple belt

good discussion at the end. although bjj is often practiced as a sport, it is still a combat sport, and you should be wary of watering down the combat aspect.

It's also an art form that can be practiced at full speed BECAUSE limitations were put in. Before Kano gatherered all styles to form judo, jiujitsu training used to injure and kill participants. Kano kept the moves that were safe to practice over and over. When making it 'more real' is at odds with safety, it's not a choice if you want to have safe randoris. Ego over common sense is always dangerous.

Only the lifting part of the slam should be allowed. The person who got lifted and didn't let go off guard/submission should be penalized. That solution would get best of both sides: it would be safe, but also would discourage staying in the position with potential to be slammed.

I think the argument of "it's taking a tool away" is absurd. If claiming anything that would be effective regardless of how technical it is would be crazy. By that logic why not allow something like eye-gouging because with that logic it should be fine. Just have wrist control if you don't want to get your eyes destroyed. In summary, the idea that just because it's effective and can be avoided doesn't mean that slamming or other dangerous techniques should be allowed just because it's a way to get out of a position. @FloGrappling

I'd have to agree with you. The slam we saw was pretty brutal and should be used in real self defense but not in controlled competition. Just think if this is allowed then guys, and girls, could perfect the ultimate slam with the intention to concus, not to break a hold. These slams don't give you an opportunity to tap.

I don't know. It's mostly an amateur sport, slamming somebody on the floor increase the risk of injuries, grave injuries like damage to your spine. Not insurance company will touch any activity like that unless there's a lot of money involved, they do not want risks; and if you see a kid in a tournament getting quadriplegic for a slam might no be good for parents watching that tournament and not a good marketing strategy for your sport. The problem with slams are that they are not grappling, you are striking with the ground; You can knockout someone with a suplex, but the main goal is o a throw is to make a transition from standing to ground, slams have the sole pourpose to creat the most impact possible with the ground to generate a knockout. Ok for a strinking sport, not for grappling.

Slams should be banned, but if a guard player allows himself to be lifted then he should be penalized by 2 points, so the threat is legitimate and the defense is necessary regardless. The rules need to stop protecting guard players, or guard will become a completely fanciful way to play the game .

@JSL JSL makes a great point. In the gi, it's easy to pick someone up from MANY guards and slam them (not just closed guards). You can also lift, slam, and paralyze someone from a stack pass... which leads me to think that eventually (if slams become commonplace) that someone will get paralyzed while getting slammed from closed guard if they try to invert into the legs or something weird as they are slammed. Although... from other guards (like DLR for example), the defender would have at least one leg free as he's picked up so he could defend the slam by standing.
