CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Reg (Paul Newman) arrives at the train station to meet The Chiefs' new recruits - the Hanson Brothers. Owner Joe McGrath (Strother Martin) relays a story to Reg about a "terrible masturbator."
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Paul Newman plays Reggie Dunlop, the coach of a pathetic minor-league American hockey team. His career at a standstill and his marriage in tatters, Dunlop has nothing to lose by taking on a new group of players who are one evolutionary step above Neanderthals. Only when the team begins winning does he decide to get behind these players, and to encourage the rest of the team to play as down-and-dirty as the newcomers. Straight-arrow team member Ned Braden (Michael Ontkean) resents this influx of gonzo talent, preferring to play clean. As the film's multitude of subplots play themselves out, Dunlop does his best to keep the outraged Braden on the team. Slap Shot is the sort of film for which the "R" rating was invented: Its nonstop barrage of profanity and its raunchy action sequences are of such intensity that the film will probably never be shown intact on commercial television.
CREDITS:
TM & © Universal (1977)
Cast: Jeff Carlson, Steve Carlson, David Hanson, Strother Martin, Paul Newman
Director: George Roy Hill
Producers: Robert Crawford Jr., Robert J. Wunsch, Patrick Kelley, Stephen J. Friedman

I remember seeing this with my Dad at the State Street Theater in Schenectady NY. Union College had just started their hockey program under the legendary Ned Harkness. Union started winning from the first drop and later we found out why. Locally we were a bit hockey crazed so we had to see this movie. Fond memories! It really captures the feeling of living in the Northeast in the mid-seventies. The factory closings, etc.... The bar scenes, I can smell the stale beer and the lighting and music are spot on. This is one of those movies you lock onto while channel surfing. It doesn't matter how far into the movie it is. Goodfellas is that way also.

Everything they do, they do it together! George Roy Hill gets deserved credit with "The Sting" and "Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid" yet "Slap Shot" provides great camera angles and great timing. Dede Allen's editing was crucial and atypical, she worked with Paul Newman in "The Hustler" which made it more comfortable... as Mr. Newman made all who worked with him feel that way.

One of my favorite things in my life is that my grandma is friends with these guys, lol. They used to play for a team in my hometown and she was a young figure skater that helped organize one of the first womens hockey teams up there. I’ve met them a bunch of times because they do like meet and greets (or used to, this was like 20 years ago) but they’re really cool guys! My gram and then (just two of them usually) would go have dinner.

0:53 A lot of people tend to miss this exchange of dialogue, and I think that specific bit of dialogue at least justifies the way the Hansons are; They're literally the _very youngest_ of the Charlestown Chiefs, even younger than College aged Ned Braden! I'd say it's pretty fair to let the very youngest of the bunch act like they're the kids, pretty much because they _are_ in comparison to the other Chiefs.
