Follow up to my comment from 3 years ago....once again couple months ago tried it but kept mouthpiece at my desk with soft legere on it (1.5) and tried it multiple times a day. After about a week suddenly I started getting suction! I kept at it couple of weeks until suction and slap was very strong. Then did same daily attempts at popping air while releasing suction (super hard at first!). Eventually that started working too. Here I am couple months out and now figuring out how to work it into my solos. Thanks Derek! This was pain in the butt to nail down but persistence paid off.

Hello Darek. I must say, I've never seen anyone play saxophone as you do. It's amazing what sounds you can produce on the thing! I am either talented or lucky. I saw this video, thought "Hey, let's see if I can do that." And I could. It's the first thing I have been able to get on a first time. I'm not really sure if I do it correctly (I haven't tried since don't want to wake up the entire house), but I feel like I do as you describe, and there is sure some kind of suction on the reed. I will look up for more tutorials on new things with sax. Thanks for a great tutorial!

This technique is still eluding me, I can make a really FORCEFUL pop sound now, but I can't achieve a clear resonant tone. The biggest issue is transitioning from achieving suction to forming a proper embouchure. Actually applying an embouchure forces you to almost relearn how to get suction because you have to create it closer to the tip of your tongue. I find that in trying to actually do it, my jaw and tongue start hurting like crazy, and 9 times out of 10 I overshoot the amount of air I push out and create a loud, wonky squawk rather than that nice hollow tone. Consistency seems to be a big challenge as well. Hitting it once out of a dozen times isn't all that encouraging.
@beatboxsax9 жыл бұрын
+jamey robinson As hard as this technique is, it really sounds like you're VERY close! Other than lots of repetition (which will be very tiring at first, so do it in short bursts), a key thing is applying a bit more pressure from your lower lip (AKA biting harder). I demonstrate this around the 7:00 minute in the above video. Check it out again and see if that helps. Keep up the good work!!!

I'll keep practicing and watching the video again and again... (Please excuse my english:-)

+Beatbox Sax I have figured out how to make the slapping sound using my tongue, but to do so, I generally have to put my mouth over almost the entire mouthpiece; It works better if I use almost my whole tongue. It is much harder to do it with less of my tongue, which I need to do in order to improve my embouchure with the different tones. Do you have any tips to make it a little easier? I just so happen to have the same mouthpiece you do, if that helps at all.

Hi Derek. Really interesting videos. I have a question about this technique. Does the type of mouthpiece and reeds one uses play a big role achieving this effect? I am still using a Jupiter student saxophone with an otto link hard rubber mouthpiece and 2 1/2 Java reeds. Btw I love the PMauriat Saxophones. My previous teacher Karen Devroop also plays one. They are just really expensive. Loving the videos. Regards from South Africa, Cape Town.
@beatboxsax9 жыл бұрын
Eduan Steenkamp Eduan, the mouthpiece and reeds shouldn't really affect this too much. Yes, can reeds may break more frequently (especially when practicing), which is a big reason I use Legere synthetic reeds. But slap tonguing is definitely possible on any set up. It just takes a LONG time to get down. Good luck!

I'm still trying to develope the technique, it seems as if the suction on the reed is caused by some motion (at least that's what i noticed during the only sucessful try). Am I suposed to blow air and, at the same time, stop its flow with the tongue technique?
@beatboxsax9 жыл бұрын
+Rádio Mono-Lodía ♫ You have to puff air through the horn right when you release the reed from your tongue. However, it doesn't take much air to hear the slap (actually none). The little bit of air just helps to amplify the slap sound.

+Beatbox Sax HI best beatboxer on earth :) i love learning your techniques my favorites being the pop and multiphonic, but with this tonguing style i find it rather hard to create enough suction on the reed when my bottom lip is pressed against the mouthpiece. Love the videos, and hearing you play/beatbox...so cool. I've been practicing this technique (slap tongue), and I seem to be able to get a very loud pop noise, but it really is devoid of a specific tone. When I try and push more air, I get the tone, but then it just sounds like I am honking out the note, rather than that nice subtle pop + tone. Any tips?
@beatboxsax10 жыл бұрын
Bob, it sounds like you're really close to getting this! I'd suggest experimenting with more lower lip pressure, biting harder and maybe a bit further forward than normal. Yet although biting harder helps with getting that pure slap tone, it also makes it go sharper, so watch for that. It's all about balance. If you'd like some one-on-one help, I'm available for Skype lessons on my website: derekbrownsax.com. Good luck!

Just for general playing, what material of reed do you recommend? Metal, plastic, wood? Others?
@beatboxsax9 жыл бұрын
+Wisepka For general playing most cane or synthetic reeds will do, though I highly recommend Legere (synthetic reeds), especially the Signature series. Yes, they're much more expensive, but they last at least 4 times as long, you don't have to wet them, and each one is totally consistent with the next. For my beatbox stuff, they're a must!

I can get the suction on the reed alone well enough around the middle of my tongue, but the whole thing starts going awry when I add the mouthpiece. I can't seem to get even a remotely good tone without swallowing the whole mouthpiece. The absolute hardest part to master is getting a good suction closer to the end of your tongue. Pushing air out is a challenge as well, because my inclination is to try and get a "pop" through sucking in, but that really only creates a false pop that doesn't produce any real tones.

Hi! Thanks for the video! (I practiced these techniques long before the appearance of your videos). I get to do these techniques, but only when I use the tip of tongue (because of this I almost always crack the reed), but actually the tip of the tongue should rest against the teeth, the position of the tongue should be traditional, doesn't it? Need your help. Sincerely, Ilya.
@beatboxsax9 жыл бұрын
+Il_ALex Sorry for the delay here. I only just now saw your comment/question. Yes, reeds will crack more with this technique (although using synthetic reeds like the Legere reeds I use help BIG TIME!). I don't think the tip of the tongue should rest against the teeth (as in anchor tonguing, which I do a lot, by the way), but will join the rest of the tongue on the reed to get the suction. You don't want to just flick the reed down with the tip, but rather to get suction and pull it down. That being said, after a TON of practice, it takes surprisingly little tongue to do this. It's tough, but stick with it. Good luck!

@beatboxsax10 жыл бұрын
It's really up to you, but I'd suggest a few minutes, multiple times each day. When you do start to get the suction, you will get to a point where your tongue might get sore (it can eventually even bleed!). This is normal though, as it's kind of like guitarists building up callouses on their fingers. But that's why it's best to spread out your practicing of this. Good luck!

OK, I've been exploring a few of the tutorials here. Like many of the other people, here, I can get the suction, but not sure what to do about getting the air. When I apply suction, I am getting the tip of the reed, and the tip of the mouthpiece together, and the suction is coming from my throat, up the channel formed in the center of the tongue. I am not so much getting the reed to pop as I am getting my tongue to bounce off the reed and the mouth piece together. Every now and the, I can hear it resonating in the mouth piece, it seems especially so when I can almost feel my tongue between the reed and the mouthpiece. If I am getting the suction from my throat, I can't turn it around and blow a puff of air. Am I on the right track, or is this a false positive? One thing I have found is that I need to try a lot of different tongue position before I get any resonance.
@86larsonrd7 жыл бұрын
and a few days ago I made some progress. A couple things helped. One, Used a plastic covered reed. Two, used more tongue....it really is the middle of the tongue. Using my finger to find the suction point was essential. To answer my own question above, no, the suction should not be coming from the throat. It is all tongue.
@86larsonrd7 жыл бұрын
And...more progress. Tonight I got the first real POP sound with some air,...and gagged until I almost lost my dinner. I'm still using a huge amount of tongue, and alot of air to get the pop. Other techniques that helped: when first trying to get a suction on the reed, putting the reed against the lower lip really helped. Switching to a Leger plastic made a big difference on Tenor, although I also was using a plastic coated on Also and that works nicely too. To move from suction to pop was easier on the smaller reed. Messing around with tongue position was probably the most important part of making progress. The position is much further forward, or, put another way, the suction spot is much further back on the tongue than I first thought. When trying to get the pop, I was at first trying to keep the top sealed, but it feels like that is less important that keeping the bottom sealed and overblowing the reed.
