I miss times like this. Drinking in bars. Playing pin-ball. Being bored, but hanging, out. Observing. Before internet and cell phones and modern clubs. Just sitting, drinking and talking...with the occasional dancing when good songs came on, or the band was hot, or the occasional argument or scrap.

You called it man. I was 20 in 1977. In college you could go out to any of the local places, actually meet a girl, talk to her, get a phone number 9 out of 10 times, get a date. Now, everybody is so judgemental, everybody is waiting for their knight in shining armor, and in the meantime doing nothing, going no where.

I was born in a small town where people used to spend a lot of time visiting. Can you imagine there was actually a time when spending time with your neighbours was seen as valuable and important? We've lost a lot of social connections in the last 30 years but people passively accept that. No wonder so many people are lonely.

haven't watched “Slapshot” in its entirety since I was 15. I had insomnia last night & watched it through the lens of a man who’s lived a lot of life. Coach Reggie Dunlap is motivated to win in this movie because he wants to win Francine's heart back. (Love how he dances with her to the Leo Sayer tune in this clip.) There's a scene following this one where he follows her home, & she rejects him because of his myopic disregard of the future. She reminds him that they’re estranged due to his Peter Pan syndrome. (He thinks he's going to continue to get by on charm & looks & athleticism.) That’s when Reggie decides he might need to focus on the future. He buys a chest of beer for the team claiming it's complements of the team’s owner & makes up a story about a Florida deal where they’ll all be playing in the sunshine state! Reggie is inspired not just to play pro hockey - but to WIN - & that spirit motivates the rest of the Charlestown Chiefs to win! Why this epiphany??? He's still in love with Francine! ❤️ “No amount of fire, force, or freshness can challenge what a man will store up in his ghostly heart...” - F.Scott Fitzgerald [Brandy, if you ever read this, would you dance with me to the jukebox?…]

Those Stroh's bottles behind the goalie at 2:50 warm my heart, since I'm from Michigan. A great movie. Leo Sayer sounds like he's running a little quick there.

@Scrappleton II to each his own. It was revered in my youthful experience, which went from prior to the time of this movie, to around 1984. If you got the Bohemian, fire-brewed product in gold and black cans, or "registered" 5-cent deposit bottles, that was part of the regional heritage. A sale of the company led to blue cans, and the advent of what I call "death march Stroh's," which is still made. Stroh's is back with new brands, but at around $9 a six, four times what we spent two generations ago.

can you imagine that "faggot" line being said in a movie today? there would be protests, riots, work closures, government news conferences, etc.
@alucard6242 жыл бұрын
The majority of the dialog in this movie wouldn't fly today. It was a better time back then when you could speak your mind and not worry about getting cancelled by soyboy fruitcakes.
@@DarthPhallix And what people don't realize is that including dialogue like that in movies brings to light how segments of the population talk and think. Society then has the freedom to choose whether or not they applaud that way of thinking or protest against it. By censoring dialogue like that you are controlling and censoring our freedom of speech.

What makes this movie so great is the work of the casting team. Denis is an example of great role as the goalie. While Paul Newman is the star, the supporting cast is the difference between a classic movie and ok movie. I love that there is no egos. Great work!

The scene right after this was actually quite amazing; it really showed how Paul Newman was a seriously talented actor. It’s when he comments on Francine’s dress, that she looks good in it; but it’s a little tight. What he says next though is magical… He asks if she has been going out in that dress, if she’s been wearing that dress for someone else and getting around. She responds that it’s none of his business anymore. As a kid, that scene was just filler for me and didn’t register. As a man in his 50’s, that scene really hit home for me. You could hear the sadness in his voice; but there was way more than just some jealous man. If you haven’t watched the scene in a long time, it’s definitely worth watching it again.
@twhis98436 ай бұрын
I’m with you on that scene. Those scenes where Newman would be so human then flip back into the endlessly hustling captain of the Chiefs was some the best acting of his career. It certainly takes a bit of maturity to catch those scenes. Newman was always great, but I’ve always thought he was over the top in Slapshot. It takes real talent to show emotional depth in a shallow character. Awesome.

Ned Braden was such a buzz kill, and his awful girlfriend too...they were the only thing that sucked about this movie! So really, Ned was the real killer...the real buzz killer!
@OneEyedKeys3 жыл бұрын
Ned was the 'heart' of the movie, and his girlfriend also. Ned was the 'purist' who Dunlop, after his lies and agitations to create mayhem, returned to trusting. He asked for Ned's company during the final game to 'play it straight'. They did. Then goonery again erupted, and the circus that Dunlop created was praised by the owner and sought after by the scouts. Mayhem ensued. Ned rebelled, and took the movie to a whole other level with his striptease, so it was not just another cliche sports movie ending. He won his woman back, and it was the only romance of the movie. The team won the Championship, and Dunlop was vindicated. All because of Ned.
