Horror and comics have a long history. Frankly, I'm surprised more aren't produced (Ed's doing his part!) as the medium really lends itself to the genre. Comics are the perfect medium for pulpy, over the top storytelling which a lot of horror is, and they're always fantastic for showcasing bizarre, visceral imagery which again goes hand in hand with horror. We need more horror comics! Edit: I'd love to see you guys cover more horror books, especially for October!

Psycho was adapted and painted by my Kubert school classmate Felipe Echevarria, a terrific painter. Innovation screwed up the licensing of the comic pretty badly. They hired Felipe to adapt the movie with accurate likenesses of all the main characters. It’s a lot of work to hand-paint that many panels and nail the likeness every time! Then, after he’d painted hundreds of watercolor panels of Anthony Perkins and Janet Leigh , Innovation looked at their paperwork and realized they only had the right to adapt the movie- they’d never gotten the rights to depict either actor’s likeness. Janet Leigh eventually signed off on it, but Perkins refused, so Felipe had to hire a model and “recast” Norman Bates, lighting and shooting new photo ref for every single panel that Bates was in and repainting every one of those faces. Comics!

I got to meet Rich Buckler at a local comic shop years back and I had my Freddy book signed by him. I asked why he didn't do the whole issue and I recall he said that the material turned his stomach and he argued with the editor about it. He said he insulted the editor left the room, then came back and embellished the insult then left again. He was a really nice guy and he did great sketches there too.

That Psycho comic was by my friend and mentor Felipe Echevarria. I met him when I signed up for a cartooning class at local rec center. A really nice guy who's still kicking around the business, he self published a gorgeous painted graphic novel Death From Above recently.

I just had a momentary blast of fear. That Freddy comic, the left bottom panel of page 9. That is straight out of a recurring nightmare I had of Freddy being in my house and me trapped outside as he killed my family. I saw Nightmare on Elm Street by accident when I was 4 years old and had nightmares for years and years. The night I watched it, my poor traumatized 4 year old brain had my first nightmare, combined with the story of the Princess and the Pea where my mattresses were being multiplied until I was smashed against the ceiling and Freddy was below slashing at me. (I drew some of that in a John Carpenter Tales for a HalloweeNight comic, btw).

A book that might be interesting to look at this month is Big Baby by Charles Burns, especially for the Black Hole "prequel".

I recently started collecting A Nightmare on Elm Street comics. I have both Marvel Magazine issues of ANOES from 1989, The complete 1991 Innovation Nightmares on Elm Street limited series, and issue 1 of the 1991 Innovation Freddy's Dead comic so far. Freddy's Dead issues 2 and 3 are on their way in the mail now, and next, I'll be picking up the 1993 Innovation 2 issue set of ANOES The Beginning. After that, I'll probably go after the Avatar Freddy comics. I'm not sure if I will get the Wildstorm Elm Street books, because they don't look very appealing to me, but we'll see. There are a few other Freddy comics, too, with one set being a UK exclusive, but I'll probably just stick with the Marvel, Innovation, and Avatar ones.

Even though magazines weren't subject to the CCA, the Steve Gerber written NoES mags kinda pushed the envelope of perhaps good taste, with the rape scene in #1 being REALLY shocking for a book from Marvel in 1989. The backstory of the cancellation, Gerber's response and the first/only 2 issues can all be read here: nightmareonelmstreetfilms.com/site/beyond-the-films/comic-books/marvel-comics/

Not a movie adaption, but if you Kayfaber’s want to read the most gruesome, violent, horrifying comics ever, look no further than Garth Ennis’ CROSSED series from Avatar! The sweet lady who owns my LCS loves telling the story about the one time a customer came in and said “Give me the most brutal thing you’ve got!” And she handed him a TPB of Crossed and he bought it, then came back the next day and returned it, saying “No way, this is TOO MUCH!”

Too bad you didn't have the great ultra gory Avatar Friday the 13th comics that Mike Wolfer illustrated. Those are easily the best Friday the 13th comics out there. Tons of grade a gore and slop.

If EC comics hadn't been forced to end their horror titles, comic books may be considered a horror medium now rather than superhero.

Samurai Funnies! Those things were always special to my heart for some unexplainable reason! I used to hoard them when I came across any in the quarter bins in the early 90s.

Can't believe you didn't show any of the Avatar Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street or Texas Chainsaw Massacre. those were the onces with all the gore and nudity that the fans of the movies expected. all the others were too tame by comparison.
