Dont Starve Lore (MERM THEORY)

Merms are one of my favorite creatures in all of dst. probably rn they are a quick second to primeapes in being the funnest faction to work with. However, not many people know the dark history of merms and the lore surrounding them. And until now, im assuming almost nobody knew how deep the merm iceberg actually goes. Well im here today to prove that its all connected. The Gnaw, The goatpeople, The sentient merms sammy and pipton, the gorge, the elder pig, The constant merms, shipwreckeds fishermerms, their war with pigmen, the mermguard, wurt, and the merm king are all part of a very complex storyline about 2 groups in the constant. although I dont think this lore video adds too much to the main storyline, its still a very interesting story about the Gnaw and merms, should we see more of them as this games lore and content progresses.

Actually to counter the merms being hostile, I’ve never had them attack me unless I get too close to their homes, they’re otherwise fairly neutral, minus the pig/merm battle set piece, where they’re always hostile.

Merms are quite neutral if they have a home, since they'll never want to stray too far, in fact you can stay close to them if you're not in their home's range and they won't attack you. If they don't have a home, they're very hostile and will chase you for a long time, hence what happens with the "Get distracted by random setpiece" merms.

Honestly the only issue i have with this amazing theory, Is that you can kill the mermking and they'll just be replaced, but it's settled by the fact that if their all from the gorge its possible that's just the culture they remember

I get there’s parallels but the elder pig isn’t nearly as big as the merm king and Wurt has a victorian skin there are unused gorge quote in the files that suggest Wurt is supposed to be canonically with the survivors in gorge even though she was added later It’s possible but unlikely

Counter theory: Not all merms are the same. When they were originally transformed I imagine the feral merms were created that way, and were simply killed off, banished or fled to new lands because they were causing too much trouble, leaving the more intelligent merms to serve The Gnaw while the feral ones spread out and built new societies on other islands. Still retaining recessive traits from their goat ancestors though, some merms are born as more advanced subspecies, fishermerms have goat beards, and warrior merms and Wurt have horns, implying they are closer to the goats than standard merms, and have much higher intelligence as a result. When Wurt creates a merm king it could simply force the merms to become much more focused, taking them from a scattered village to a concentrated society, artificially raising their intelligence and making them much more passive just like the fishermerms from shipwrecked

Could more proof that the Gnaw is affecting the brains of creatures be it's similarity to the wormholes? Jumping through a wormhole affects a character's sanity and we aleays assumed it's because the experience is questiinable, but what if the sanity drain is the tribute? And the Gnaw could very well be the progenitor of the wormholes, or a worm that simply grew too much.

That does make more sense when considering the sick wormhole in Adventure Mode. I’m wondering how does “feeding” the wormhole work then, since the item just goes out the other end. Even food items won’t be eaten by wormholes.

Well, let's see: Deep Ones would enter into bargains with human communities were they would trade treasure and bountiful fish catches in return for worship and servitude. Anyone who disobeys is killed. Kind of like how the Gnaw has a "bargain" where it gives coins to those who satisfy its hungers, and it forces its "followers" to worship it on fear of death. Deep Ones worship two gods named Father Dagon and Mother Hydra. A Hydra in ancient Greek myth was an aquatic serpent with multiple heads. The Gnaw is a wyrm (a serpent) with ties to water and can possibly be in multiple places at once (the alters of snackrifice) and is technically the "mother" of the merms in that it created them. Maybe a reference there?

You should look through Maxwell's quotes and see if there are any other cool, overlooked chunks of lore, this was cool. Although I think it might be interesting to note that multiple Merm Kings can exist simultaneously - but then, multiple playable Wurts can, too. Multiwurt theory when?

I think that the reason why wurt is smarter to the other merms is because she was a goat child, parts of her brain were not active yet, and thus the gnaw could not steal them. when she fled, when landed in the constant, over time parts of her brain got activated, with no gnaw to take them, hence her being more open minded then the other merms. I also think that a merms horns might be a symbol of how smart they are. When the merm king comes, the merm warriors horns look good, but when he falls, there horns look battered as a symbol of loosing some of there intelligence.

This theory is genuinely awesome, and the part about her being born a merm even makes sense canonically! According to her Victorian skin, she has lived with scales rather than fur, saying that "Wurt couldnt imagine trading her sensible scales for unruly fur" implying that she she hasnt experienced this before. Also, and this is entirely speculation, perhaps her Victorian form could be from the gateway, considering how the survivors had their clothes changed into victorian ones after entering the gorge realm, as seen in the cinematic. So , through the portal's supposedly corruptive powers, maybe the gnaw's own curse was reversed, turning the only merm to go through into a goat, or at least partially. So, at least where klei is concerned, that part checks out!

There's also this that I found on the wiki : Upon his release, Wortox's speech file contained examination quotes for a character labeled "NEXTCHARACTER".[37] These quotes were removed at some time between Warly's update and Woodie's refresh. Generic- "Hyuyu, what are you up to %s?" Attacker- "Don't get my goat, little %s!" Murderer- "Eep! Don't slaughter me!" Reviver- "Thank-you, thank-you, little goat!" Ghost- "Don't worry, I'm not hungry." Firestarter- "Little goat! You played pranks without me!" This could mean that wurt was indeed a goat before, because she was the next character after wortox.

One thing that you might have overlooked a tad, that kind of supports your theory that Wurt was born a merm one way or another, is her goat skin she has. I believe the quote for it states she doesn't like the fur, which if she was turned as a child wouldn't make sense because that would be what her "normal" used to be. I do think that this theory holds water, and while parts of it may be wrong, it is possible that it is correct for the most part. It also makes sense that the merm king formation would work, as he would notice and likely recall the traits of his only other ally, as far as he knows the last remaining member, recreating the society they were forced to abandon, giving him hope. This was a fun vid to watch, gonna pop this over to my friend who I play with and had theorized what Wurt even was with and see what she thinks.

imagine if there was a new gorge event where it come to the constant as a boss and the two sales men over time have become more like religious devotees and prophets, and now the merm king and all merms put aside the survivors to help vanish the mouth once and forall in a boss battle that is on land and sea that is super hard but leads to a bunch of lore and a cool item or two.

@@apollyonnoctis1291 Maybe is more like some kind of battle where you fight "cultist merms" (or even make that in-lore in reality they were knocked out so that they can be saved after the Gnaw has been defeated) and making the Gnaw hungry from using it power so you have to swap the 2 controlled sale mans dishes for Gnaw into bad food which can be as far as hp reducing food, rotten food or even "special dishes" like a poisoned steak or a stuffed chicken that shortly after explodes upon consumption

Klei said that they wouldn't make an event like this again because it was too much work. So I really wish they would add the Gnaw island into the main game. When the survivors go through the portal, the goat mother said that she would follow. It might be a good twist if the entire island got sucked in. Note that none of tbis is canon but if you want the pretty accepted answer community wise, it's that the pigs evolved different traits per island. Savage Shipwrecked Pigs evolved to survive with bare minimum supplies and constantly wander, Tribalistic Mainland pigs who collectively form societies and outposts, and Pseudo Victorian Hamlet who harnessed local iron and gold deposits. The reason PK has the Insanity Obelisks is because magic is much more useful to harness when you have no way to get better tools As said before, no canon connection, but something most of the community likes to consider

You forgot about one big detail. When merm king dies, another merm can take the throne. I think this means that with the gnaw’s power the pig/merm king can transfer his mind into the brain of a willing merm before dying and re take the throne.

I had a similar theory about Shipwrecked. But in my opinion(based in Maxwell quotes about vulcano) vulcano is a powerful being like "them" or the moon(maybe not that powerful, but still), allows you to create obsidian items(just like "them" and moon), also it feeds on not only food but also important items. My theory is that the gnaw was in Shipwrecked long before he moved to Gorge. All he left is merms and remnants of what was left of the pig population. After gnaw left, merms(as this larger group) startet to expand on their own, thats why they houses looks so good compared to pigs, and thats why they even have fishing faction. Besides, interesting film, i hope there will be more of that :)

Personally, I don't think the merm king is the elder pig. Theres too many merms and the king can die and come back. No, I think the merm king is like the merm king because wurt is the one who created the position. Wurt's knowledge of merm culture (and her love of story books) was what made a merm king. The merm king uses the same powers as the gnaw, as you said, which is why he needs food to function more so than other merms. The merm king looks like the elder pig because the pigs and goats remember and respect the elder pig, even if its subconscious due to their lack of brain function. Just a thought... I don't think the Merm King is the elder pig. I main Wurt, and my usual strategy is, feed the king to full, trade as I will, then don't worry about the guy. if he dies, make a new king. The identity of the king before you make him king through excessive feeding is pointless. The merms have little to no brain, the mental capacity taken by the wurm when they swam away... but what if Wurt is feeding a surrogate? what if the Merm King is the start of a new Wurm, and Wurt a new Mumsy? She emerges somehow (birth, growing from a fish, etc, doesnt matter) and her horns are a sign that she's smart enough to make a new society, and foster a merm (wurm) king, to make the constant like the Gorge island, a land designed to feed an ever growing king, making the mindless merms to a new society, to guard and feed? It would make sense as to why the horned merms are smarter, too...two of the merchants for the gorge are goats, too. Mumsy even has scalelike qualities to her "fur"...what if she started like Wurt, feeding fishes until they grew, and she was just massively successful, because she had a portal to survivors who could feed Gnaw? And...what if Wurt has the same advantage in the constant? Friends. Friends to feed the merms, for a better follower class? If the Merm King is the Elder Pig, then if the Merm King dies what happens, does the new Merm just become a new king or is it powered up by the trident and crown of the fallen king… this idea is a bit weird but could the carpet the Merm King sit on as well as the trident and crown give some extra layer of intelligence to Merms, or at least give particular memories of the previous king? We know memory magic exists cause of the archive/sanctum areas added a little while ago, so who knows…

I doubt the merm king is the Pig Elder mainly because essentially any merm can become a king and that there can be more than one But rather I think its someone taking a similar possition to the Pig Elder, or maybe they want to resemble the Pig Elder, someone that deep down they still see as a compassionate and caring leader Sure , death isnt permanent in the constant, that could apply to the Pig Elder aswell, and there can be more than a single wilson or wurt, so that could apply to him aswell But I think the merms having the Pig Elder as their image of a leader, someone any potential merm king should look up to, is more likely and in a way more fitting in my opinion

My thought is that the merm king is some form of synaptic link similar to the tyranids from warhammer Wurt is some form of scout unit to form a new merm King that the wyrm can influence to someday form a proper faction to amass food and eventually the wyrm will move over to the mainland constant for a more steady stream of food and enable it to grow larger

We know merms in the constant are converted pigs because they are 4 to a house. 4 is as high a pig could count. Wurts mother was turned by gnaw while pregnant with wurt then swam to freedom. She's mutated but not under its spell. You can clearly see a random merm become king... and wurt can create 2 merm kings in one world. Wurts power reverts merms via the king, he must stay on the mat she created to be 'king'. And if he's killed another random can take his place, so long as the mat remains. Wurt doesn't create new merms. She attracts them from elsewhere by building them huts. Could be from the ocean or wherever but xgoat merms don't live in swamp houses only xpig merms do.

I have no problem with theoryes about films or games, they can be interesting and could possibly foresee the future of the franchise, or look deeper into its past. However, there are a few steps that are necessary to making good theoryes about something, these are things that I noticed are important to make logical conclusions to a theory, and a few things that I noticed being holes in your Merm theory for examples to avoid next time: Inspiration or ideas from reality: The creators of a certain universe always, no matter what, will take inspiration or ideas from already existing universes or aspects from the real world (Warhammer from Christianity, Starcraft from Warhammer). This doesn't mean that the creators won't change some aspects of these ideas, for an example in your video, Klei definetly took inspiration from Greek mythology, but that doesn't mean that the Gnaw has to be similar to Charibdys in every way. The Gnaw doesn't appear to be intelligent in any form, Mumsy never states that it can speak, it is most likely a being with no toughts, more like an animal who has only instincts. Also if it turns the Merms to a creature like itself, why are the Merms vegetarian, while the Gnaw eats everything? Why don't they have razor sharp teeth, or endless hunger? There is also no depiction of the Gnaw being a worm like creature. It is also important for us not to compare in-game things to other things in real life, because it is how they work irl, for example: If a character has magnetic powers in a video game, you shouldn't theorize that the character can affect electricity or plasma, just because it is how it works in real life. If you have no evidence of this in the game, you can't just make it up. So basically, prefer in-game evidence or the lack of it over real life examples. Gameplay mechanics aren't necesseraly canon in the lore: This one is pretty obvious, gameplay and story are not necesseraly tied together every time, and are almost impossible to pull of in most games (Characters in League of Legends for example can do things that they can't in the lore). The Merm king is a good example for this, its a way for the Wurt player to buff her faction. The Merm king still exists in the canon, but it would be very strange for him to just summon his guards from thin air, this is also a gameplay mechanic. Because the Merm king exists in game, you and other Merms become more powerful, this is a good reason for you to actually summon him, but this doesn't mean that he has some kind of magical amplification over Merms in the story. Merms cheering for the summoning of their king could also be just a little feature, and merm guards becoming weaker is a way to punish the player for not watching over the Merm king. Imagining how the creators think: This entirely depends on how intelligent the creators are (for example if I made a theory about Palpatine being still alive in Star Wars new trilogy before we got the knowledge that he still is, people would have said that I am dumb, but only because we had no evidence of it. However the creators did not care about this, and they just made it happen despite it being a dumb and illogical decision. Nobody could foresee that, because stupidity isn't predictable.). If the creators are intelligent, they will try to make everything clean in their story if possible. If they don't, well that is just a dumb decision, they can have things foggy a little bit, but they need to make sure that the players have at least a little information about it. (Imagine if we had no evidence of Sauron existing before, but Tolkien said that he existed in his story from the very beginning, but he didn't put any appearance or mention of him into the books. This would be illogical, because you can't expect the readers to know things what you don't give info about.) This concludes into the Elder pig being the Merm king in your theory. They sit in a similar pose, yes, but I as creator can't expect players to know that this is intentional based on a similar sitting pose. If I wanted to make players think about the Elder pig being the Merm king, I would have put in hints that are at least a little bit obvious. For example making the Merm king missing his left eye, since the Elder pig also misses one, or having a similar beard, or even sitting the exact same way as the Elder pig, or speaking how he speaks. This is also true to the Merm king's supposed intelligence amplifiyng powers, if I wanted players to know that he has this power in the story, I would have given Merms more intelligent quotes after he spawns. The last one of these three is the most important in my opinion, but because you can only expect these things from a competent game developer, it could be entirely useless based on your game's developers (But all of them are important nontheless). If you use these techniques while creating a theory, it could still be not true, but nobody could argue with it being solid and possible. And also, if someone criticises your theory, never think of it as an attack against you ( I know that you won't take this comment as one slasher), instead try to think of it as an oppurtinity to make your theory stronger by filling in the holes with other people's ideas.
