There is more to this story. After meeting Franz, Charlie found out about a reunion of his air unit, the 378th Bombing Regiment. Deciding to go, he brought a hesitant Franz with him. At the reunion, Franz was made an honorary member of the 378th. Franz, being humble, said he didn't do anything special. To which one of the wives of the aircrew of the _Pub_ said to him, "Mr. Stigler, look around you. These are the men you saved. Today, they have children and grandchildren...wives...that they would not have otherwise. And they have them, because of you. Because you did not fire on the Pub that December day." Slashley, in case you needed to know, Stigler did not fire on the Pub, because of his Luftwaffe training officer. That officer had told Franz in training that if he ever fired upon a man in a parachute, he would shoot such a person himself. As a plane, the Pub was just as helpless as a man in a parachute -- which meant Franz deciding to escort the Pub back to England, rather than shoot it down, and earning himself the Knight's Cross.

My theory on why stories like this make us emotional. The norm is, unfortunately, that people are just horrible to each other. War is one of the more horrible things we do, and seeing some momentary act of kindness and humanity in the middle of what is otherwise pure hell just reminds us how rare that kind of thing is. It's an uplifting story with a happy ending that makes us cry because we realize 99.9% of the time it doesn't work like that.

I think we get emotional at people doing good because we are fed a constant diet of negativity by pretty much the entire media. Pile that on top of personal past trauma and goodness feels like a rare, precious gift. That's what Sabaton celebrates - the best of humanity in times of crisis. Compassion, bravery, determination, ingenuity, overcoming trials, and learning from our mistakes. Take care of yourself!

Imagine being a fan of Sabaton, listening to all their songs. Then realizing that one of their songs is about your grandfather and how he was an absolute hero. How cool is THAT?! Yeah this track along with Night Witches always gets me emotional too. No shame in it. I'm never prouder or more emotional than seeing human beings just being bros to each other and working together to help others out for no reason other than it being the right thing to do. And these amazing stories from war - like the Christmas Truce story from WW1 - where humans put aside their petty differences for once and acted more like the single species we are just send me every time! Sabaton videos will always punch you in the feels but this one REALLY goes hard. I get what you mean about ambulances and stuff - I always feel great after getting out of the way doing an otherwise illegal move like drive up onto the sidewalk like I did something that mattered. In regards to how we see enemies - you should watch the movie "Railway Man" - its an incredibly emotional and heavy movie but fantastic. Its also my go to whenever someone tries to pull the "Nobody would forgive that" nonsense because the events of that prove that much much worse than things than you can comprehend have been forgiven. You need to check out Lady of the Dark, Nightwitches and then, when youre ready to ugly cry again, 1916.

This song reminds me of the story that general Yeager told in his autobiography and the story that the general told was similar to it! General Yeager had gotten into a dog fight with a German pilot during world war II, he had shot that Messerschmitt bf109 up pretty bad, so bad that the pilot had to bail out. General Yeager said in his autobiography about that fight, that as the German pilot passed his P-51 mustang while under the canopy. Upon seeing the general Yeager's P-51 mustang, the German pilot rendered a salute!

Hi Ash! Love your Reaction. Thank you for doing it. If you didn´t expect this you will be surprised if you dive in a bit more, because this is what Sabaton does. They take Stories of People, groups, Crews even whole Ships who did outstanding things at War an turns them into epic Songs. They sing about Heroes almost no one talks about or teaches in History Classes, so none of them should be forgotten. They have a own History Channel on KZbin where they talk and explain the backgrounds of their Songs with Indy Neidell which is an American-Swedish Historian. I love Sabaton for that and the Songs are just Epic. There are so many other great Songs. Sabaton is a band with a loooong list of history based music. and also an award winning history channel (academic award! not music) that gives background to over 100 if their songs. Sabaton videos often have dedictions and/or messages at the end, perhaps not always but, watching to the very end is frequently well worth it. Animated STORY videos (short history lessons with music videos in them, just enough history to add to the feel of the music as you just saw) Night witches Lady of the dark Red baron Christmas truce epic OFFICIAL videos. Bismark, about the sinking of the ship Defence of Moscow, self explained. Christmas truce, about the spontaneous truce in some parts of the western front during Christmas 1914 40:1, about polish soldiers, badly outnumbered (just under 750 in all) facing 42 000 germans, they where BADLY outgunned desperately defending against the German invasion 1939, they held their position for THREE DAYS. Uprising, the Warsaw Uprising against the nazi germans during 1944. To hell and back, they tell the story of Audie Murphy (highly decorated) and his struggle AFTER the war, so about PTSD and drug addiction that returning soldiers can face. Fields of verdun, the 300+ day long battle fought there. Price of a mile, about the battle of Passchendaele Screaming Eagles, about the battle of the bulge during ww2 1916 (cover of the Mötörhead song) Live performances 40:1 from poland Uprising from poland En livstid I krig live from Göteborg Sweden (in Swedish but there are subtitles) , very heavy again, about thoughts of a young man going to war. these are just some, there are plenty more from them

Read ‘a higher call’ about this story in absolute full detail. I can tell they read this book however forgot important details or mixed a very critical detail. They were crashing or falling over a city, not a forest. However they did fly over the forest right next to the city they were about to crash into. It’s in the book and the rest of the info they got right but still missed a lot. But it’s a basic info about this story. But one of the best stories of WWII.

There so many more things to say about this incident. 1/ I believe there was a standing order to not spare any plane or even pilot in a parachute. If anyone had reported the incident Stigler would most likely have been court martialed and shot 2/ Stigler stayed with the B-17 to keep the AA gunners from shooting it down, not leaving it until they got to the coast. He first wanted them to land but they refused, he then wanted them to fly to Sweden as it was closer than Britain, but they didnt understand what he meant and continued to fly towards Britain 3/ When fighting in Africa, Stigler was told by his commander, Gustav Rödel, that if you follow this order to shoot down helpless enemies I will shoot you myself. You will not follow this order to save the enemy but to save your soul because you will never forgive yourself. Stigler has said that he remembered this when he was thinking about shooting down the bomber 4/ Brown told his commander when he was debriefed and to an intelligence officer. However he was ordered not to tell anyone and the whole thing was kept secret. There was two reasons for this, one was that they didnt want other bomber crews to think that the next german fighter would spare them, and the other reason was they they didnt want the enemy to be portrayed in a humane way. 5/ Everyone in the B-17, except the initially killed gunner survived the war, with the last member dying in 2016 6/ The reason Stigler didnt fire in the first place was that he saw that the tail gunner machineguns were pointing upwards, showing no one was using them. When he came closer he saw the dead tailgunner and when he got closer he saw that the mid section gunners were either injured or trying to save other wounded crew members. 7/ Stigler wasnt part of the fighters that shot at the plane, they saw the plane fall and thought they had shot it down. Stigler was actually on the ground when the plane flew by having just come back from another mission 8/ Brown searched German records for 4 years but found no mention of the incident, for obvious reasons because Stigler never reported it. It was first when he put an ad in a german flying magazine that Stigler responded To me Stigler was a true hero and human who was in a war, but was still able to feel mercy
