Fun fact: Franz Stigler was invited to a reunion for the Bomber group several times and one of the first times, Stigler was looking out on a crowd of people and Stigler said he felt that he shouldn't be there and Charlie took his arm and told him that the people in the crowd were the children and grandchildren of the men that he saved that day.

Franz had said in an interview that the only way soldiers could cope with shooting down other planes was to see them as that. Just airplanes to shoot down. When he was lining up the shot on the B-17, he saw the tail-gunner bleeding profusely, so he couldn't do it. He got Charlie's attention and tried to get him to land the plane and surrender to Germany. Charlie refused, so he tried to get them to head to neutral air space. When Charlie refused again, he decided to escort them to safety, flying close enough to them so the ground weapons couldn't fire, for fear of hitting him, too. What a guy!!

I always tear up watching this video… the US Army kept this story secret cause they never allowed the enemy to look „human“, and Franz kept it secret cause he had to fear a death sentence for helping an American bomber crew… I love that they were firm friend for 18 years before they passed away! Great story, Sabaton always show these parts of history! Did you check the Sabaton video Christmas Truce? I can guarantee more tears! Greetings from Germany 👍🤘

It is perfectly acceptable to get emotional with this song, and other Sabaton songs as well. Most of their songs are about Military History. They tell the story without taking sides. Lead singer is Joakim Broden. He and bassist Par Sundstrom are the primary songwriters. Chris Rorland and Tommy Johansson on guitar and drummer Hannes Van Dahl round out the current lineup. (Hannes is married to Nightwish's Floor Jansen). Thay also have a Sabaton History channel, which gives a deeper history for each song. Night Witches is another animated story video. Christmas Truce, Bismarck, Soldier of Heaven , The Unkillable Soldier, and Primo Victoria for more.

Sabaton is a band that sings about war history, but they don't glorify war itself, they tell stories about persons and/or events they feel should not be forgotten. Since you have ties to Poland I absolutely recommend their songs Winged Hussars (one of my favorites), 40:1, Uprising and Inmate 4859 (story about Witold Pilecki). Another amazing songs: Christmas Truce, Bismarck, The Last Stand, En Livstid I Krig (it's in Swedish so you'll need to turn on cc)

Welcome to the huuuuge rabbit hole that is called "Sabaton" ... it is far from a shame to cry from some of their emotional songs, I kinda do every time with this song and I must have heard it a hundred times... Franz's instructor told his pilots, that if he ever saw someone shooting at a parachute, he'd shoot the pilot himself. Franz later said, he saw this plane that could not fight back anymore as a downing parachute, so he decided to help. There are many, maaaaany awesome stories more to explore with Sabaton, be it emotional ones like this, heroic ones, or "just" stunning facts, being told. As other guys in the comments, I'll go with some recommendations for other songs to continue with, these would be "Christmas Truce" , original video, "Livstid I Krig", live in Gothenburg, "Ghost Division", live in Warsaw , "Bismarck", original video, and "Swedish Pagans", live at Wacken featuring Tina Guo. Thank you for the great reaction to my absolute favourite band, and greetings from Germany!

Sabaton is a Swedish Power Metal band from Falun, which was formed in 1999. The band's songs are inspired by various historical wars. Even the band name is military inspired, as Sabaton is also the name of the part of the armor that covers the foot. So all the songs Sabaton sings are based on real historical war events,

Hi from Oregon. Hadn't seen this video although I have seen other Sabaton videos. Thanks for doing this reaction. My dad was a B-17 bomber mechanic during WWII, and for 3 years stationed at Horham Airbase in England. He never saw front line fighting but was one of the men who kept patching up the B-17s that made it back. Many didn't, and I am sure he lost many friends and others during that time. He died when I was 9 years old and never heard him talk about his time their. One of my favorites from Sabaton is "Swedish Pagans" with a guest appearance of the world renowned electric cello player, Tina Guo. She doesn't sing but has many instrumental videos you may be interested in. Also, others may have mentioned, the drummer for Sabaton is Floor Jansen's husband and father to their daughter Freja. Here's the link to "Swedish Pagans" with Tina if interested. Here's one of my favorites of Tina's, Wonder Woman Main Theme (Official Music Video, kzbin.info/www/bejne/qnqVcoamZctqfbc.

Welcome to the awesome rabbit hole that is Sabaton! I agree with some of the other comments that many Sabaton songs are quite emotional (I can think of 3 off hand that have made me shed quite a few tears). I would say that 99% of the things they sing about are real historical events (as others have said focusing mainly on military history, whether that be battles or specific people/events or even technologies (like the advent of the tank for instance)) from all sorts of time periods (lots of WW2 and WW1, but also other eras). While you should eventually try to get to all of their songs, if I had to suggest some off the top of my head, I would say En livstid I Krieg (live version), Valley of Death, Inmate 4859, Christmas Truce and Ghost Division. And I agree that if you want more context (either before watching a song or after) then their history channel would be 100% worth checking out for sure. Either way, I am sure you will both love hearing more of them for sure!

If you want to see another great true story, react to Christmas Truce but please watch the video until the very end and maybe you’ll reconize the female voice in the credits. If you want to react to a live performance, please react to “En livstid I krig” in Gothemburg. This one is in swedish but you can’t put the english subtitles. Very emotional as well. As someone said, they have some songs about polish history and a great performance in Woodstock Festival (Poland).

Quick History: Franz Stigler was a German chase aviator who spared the crew of a badly damaged American bomber and instead escorted them home. They were so badly damaged by the attack on a factory in Bremen that they just managed to keep the plane aloft and many were wounded. But when Franz approached them, he couldn't bring himself to kill them and risked his own life. Franz already had 22 degrees and only one was missing for the Knight's Cross. But instead of securing the award, he flew alongside the machine and escorted it to the North Sea. Here he saluted the American pilot, turned around and flew back. Both pilots were silent for a long time about the extraordinary act. Until they finally get to know each other personally 50 years after the war through a newspaper article. This resulted in a close friendship that only ended when they both died in quick succession in 2008.
